ROLAND W30 video of this classic sampler workstation from 1989 because all you ever see is 5 million vids of various versions of The Prodigy 'Charlie'. This is the raw sound of the Roland W30 no eq or effects just the original warm gritty sound :)
Still got two W30's with USB drive and SCSI upgrade, sequencer very fast to use once you get your head around it. Also sampler has a nice gritty 12bit sound and great synth engine bolted on.
This kind of thing makes me simultaneously respect techno producers of the 1990s - they got a huge sound out of limited hardware, and they had to sequence everything with some data entry sliders and a two-line LCD - and also slightly disrespect them, because the least creative were just stringing a bunch of clips from a sample CD together. The good producers continued to make music into the 2000s, the bad ones faded away after a couple of singles and an LP.
Absolutely fantastic work!!! My first contact whith W-30 was in 1993 and I used this guy for years to produce some jingles, cuts and ids for radios in my country. Detail:still active in my studio in 2018. Is fantastic what you do whith this W-30 and what is possible with a very restricted space of memory!!! I always saying that the most important thing is who is in front of equipament, your ideia and the domain of equipament. Here you show all of this!!! Thanks for the demo Regards from Brazil!!
I am here because of Liam, from The Prodigy :D And excelent work sir!! :D
Yorgan Yog btw the intro song sounds just like Take me to the hospital
Owned one of these back in the day, a few names used to rent it off me ( usually for some good substances)
For local gigs,if theirs went down…had some cracking nights out WITH my W30 😂
I saw an interview where Photek said it was his first keyboard too. Even the demo songs sound better quality than some roland stuff today, not so hifi, but they have more presence in a mix I bet.
That's perfect Stephen, you have taken me back to those days with a slight delay, but it was worth every second 👍 good work sir
OY OY,EASY!!well done sir,im 39 oldskool raver, been making this music with vsts etc for about 2 years,i dont even come close to this, its the dogs nuts, nice one mr!
What a COOL oldschool dance electronic! Simple but PERFECT!
Best keyboard ever
excited machine!! one of the future sequencer workstation! 🎚🔈
Very nice! Love this demo. Thanks very much :)
Great synth... I have "only" D20 from this series.. :)
Thx disk image. Good work!
Very good! Great Job !
DOPE man, love it!!! 👏👏
Most excellent
SO amazing dude! So fucking authentic dude! God I love hardcore!
Great video but the disk image is unfortunately no longer available. 😞
wow awesome. taking me back to all those rave classics from 1991. Until now I always thought they were made with the Korg M1 but turns out it was the W30.
Korg m1 better board
It was the M1 for the classic pianos and organs as well as synth sounds, but for the synth stabs etc then the W30 was used to sample parts of records that was then used to create the cassic synth stabs you hear in the video
4:09 really enjoyed that rhythm !!
Cool video man
The gold ol' days
I have one but I never learned how to step write how do i
how come the sample disk was taken down? for piracy?
link is dead can you remake please
Thanks for the disk image, I just got myself a W30 for silly cheap, needs a bit of care and love, got a new backlight ready to go in, just waiting for a SCSI chip and a HXC floppy emulator to turn up then going to pimp my board
DJ Hatstand let me know how you get on and if you find any good patches online 👍I’ve just got my hands on one too.
Hi Matthew, I got the new back light soldered and working, my Lotharek Rev F SD card floppy emulator is also in and working, so no more floppies for me, the SCSI chip is on the way from china so still waiting for that, I will say you have to take a lot of the W-30 to bits to do anything on it and it is a big pain in the arse
If you still got your floppy drive fitted then you should download Omniflop, it allows you to put disk images onto floppy, you can also use SMFW30, that's what the disk image from here was converted with, I would recommend going for the Lotharek though, you can put all your disk images on an SD card and load from that, I got mine set up so it auto boots the system disk when I turn the W-30 on
As for samples try the following sites, they have system Disks and sample disk images for the S-50, S-550 and W-30
llamamusic.com/s50s550/unusual_samples.html
gamelay.usami.com/~netboy/w30/sites/w30.msoft.it/disks.html
Enjoy
DJ Hatstand nice one mate, you have been busy! I will get the card emulator I’m just trying to get my head around using the w30 it’s like going back in time lol, i used smf to load the file that Stephen uploaded but I can’t make my own sample disks from wavs I’ve download. Omni flop does not work with usb fd drives. Thanks for the disk images and the info, it’s pretty limited on these machines.
This is mind blowing, how much time did it take to learn and do this tracks? Looks really complex even if i use an akai s950 and electribe plus juno alpha. Also the key sounds and hoover like are internal? Or did u sampled. Some piano sounds like korg m1 classic techno
just got my w30 today.... time to jam :)
where i can download all the sounds,,,realy nice
Hi there, love the 90s sounds your getting out of the W30!! I'm after the bell sound from "out of space" and the string pad sound.. Are they on there?
Any way to get these files for my W30? I have just replaced the backlight, added a SCSI2SD drive and I am very excited playing.
Dear programmers and musicians, please pay attention to the Roland W30 sequencer. It has a "Record by key press" function that, when combined with real-time quantization, is rare. Considering its stability and lack of delays, I would like someone to port the Roland W30 operating system to a computer program on PC. This is possible because Roland uses an Intel 80196 processor.
c'est beau
Thank you for uploading this sample disk. I really appreciate it. I'm looking for more of this kind of techno house samples. Do you know more? And where can I download it? I like to hear. Thank you
Can you please make a how to use the sequencer video
gonna have to get me one.
Hello where do u find the patches of Charlie at 8:38??
can u send it to me?
I've been tempted to buy one of these for a while, I already own a Korg M1. This video swayed my decision lol. Been trying to make some oldskool hardcore/jungle stuff for a while as I'm mega into it, but Ableton and its millions of plugins and options are just too focused on dubstep and EDM for me, so I spend too much time pissing around trying to get this sound. It's never gonna beat a 12bit sampler!!
Do you know if you can also use sequencer tracks to trigger notes on a midi channel (from my Korg M1 basically)?
Very good work btw!
Core2lee91 Sycing to midi is easy you would have your m1 as the master and the w30 as the slave
might anyone be able to help to figure out midi mapping to a mac with the w-30?
Impressive that this machine still holds up. This entire sequence programmed and all samples coming from the W-30? Lovely. I had one back in the day.
Today, I wish they would have made the JDXI more like this! With sampling and mapping capabilities but with all of todays faders and knobs.
Is there such a synthesizer/sampler/workstation today?
Great video man, demonstrating a classic workstation. 10:28 of pure old school :)
Hey. My W-30 had a jazz demo. Does yours and will you post it? Thanks!
WOOW !!! . True RAVE early 90x.
Hey there, love the sounds you've put together!!
I've just recently bought a w30 and use a mac. I can't seem to find any programme that will write the disk image you've uploaded for mac. What i can see was around is for super old OS's and has been discontinued...
Can you help here? would really appreciate it!!
Thanks!
Ryan
***** Thanks for the link!
4:00 sounds very fking well. going to buy one
and you are a very good producer. you should try to release some of those
5:48 sounds better ;)
Is those stabs included in your Korg pack? Would you make it available if possible in sf2 format?
Are any of those rave stabs at the end presents on the W30 or did you make them all? I love that type of sound
Nearly bought one of these the other day. Have you created the sounds or do they come with the machine?
Need some help can you help me my friend got one of these at a garage sale for 50 bucks and were not sure how it works or if it even works. We put the system disk in and it just says Roland W-30 and does nothing does something else need to be hooked up to this keyboard like a pre amp or something to get to the main screen we have sound hooked in as well please help !
*****
Think it may be the Hard disk reader itself because the back up disk and the original disk both don't work at all. And when I listened to you put your disk in mine sounded nothing like that at all.I put a bunch of other disks in it and what yours sounded like was nothing like mine sounded like once again. I might just get the HxC card and an sd card and be done with it.
10:00 I disagree about one thing, Tiesto in the early years (from end of '90s to 2003/04) used to play and program synths, and actually his trance songs were quite good. After he changed genre.....unfortunatley
wouldnt it be good to be in your shoes?
He always used ghost producers. Cor Fijneman was one of them. Next to that Ferry Corsten.
Are these patches built in or are these samples imported then edited in the W 30??
Can you re-upload your disk image?
75% speed slaps extra @5:49
are the samples u are working with here from the pre-existing Roland Sample Library?
Chris Nova777 you can download my disk in the video link
actual link please!!!!!!
АААААААААА ПОШЛА ЖАРА
Это штатные сэмплы?
Excellent piano skills! How do u put the sounds on to disk? Did u buy a old computer? Thanks
Matthew Brown No you can get an app called smfw30 that writes the image to disk
Stephen Nicholls thanks for the reply, did u do this by using a floppy disc burner or did u plug the w30 in to a lap top?
Matthew Brown No you need either a normal internal or usb floppy disk drive and you use the app to write the disk image to the floppy disk
Stephen Nicholls nice one mate!!
@@MatthewBrown-qi9rq floppy disc burner 😆
What would be today’s equivalent of the w30? Is it still worth buying a w30?
Look on Reverb.com right now, there's one in mint condition with SCSI chip installed (seller's name is Neil, I think).
hey Ive got a good idea why dont you put out a vid of "vids of various versions of The Prodigy 'Charlie'"
Did you sample from tunes or are they from old sample CDs ?
Do you remember which ? I only have the Jungle warfare ones which was later.
lol
Hi mate do you know if you can load different disks in to the sampler and save different samples in the hard drive or can u only use one sample disk to write a track.?
There is no hard drive in this keyboard unless your using an external scisi. Yes you can load any low density w30/s330/s550 formated 700k disk in this unit. When you save the track there is an option save the samples to the floppy disk as well
Stephen Nicholls so u can load one patch of one disk record that then load a different disk and record another patch from the another disk and then save them?
Just got a load of sample disks but can only get it to make a tune to that one disk, there are other sounds I want to use on other disks too.
@@MatthewBrown-qi9rq press sequencer then select disk and load your song using the load+ option. This loads the song and the sounds associated with it. Then if you want to load a sound from another disk press the sound button then select disk option load patch. It will then ask for your startup disk. Insert it and follow instructions. It will then ask for your sound disk you want to use. Insert the disk and select execute. You will then see the sound patches on the disk for you to load. You will see destination and disk. You can hightlight the option using the cursor dial and scroll through the sound banks with the value dial. So load the sound from disk to an empty location. Go back into sequencer. Once your happy with your song select disk then FD save song then save with sound+ this saves all the sounds associated with the track. Hope this helps
Stephen Nicholls you are a star! Thanks for that my head has been screwing trying to work it out! The manual is not my best friend. Big up
There is only ONE THING the W30 lacks badly... a good FX Processor !!
use Roland DEP-3 processor
I really regret smashing mine up.!! 😪 I had one back in the early 90s, but lost my temper, and launched my Commodore Amiga monitor at it. Instant regret.! 🙄😪
If anyone has one of these for sale and is willing to ship it, contact me. I have been trying to purchase one of these for a while but never can find a seller who will ship it to me in Canada ...and at a REASONABLE price...
Did you ever endup buying one?
Forward & backward looping. Enough said.
This was damn near pornographic are all these samples built into the keyboard or
No they are loaded from disks
yes but where do the samples come from originally.. are they authentic original ROLAND sound library samples? for the S-Series samplers produced by Roland?
Chris Nova777 they are a collection of sounds i sampled from various sources then compiled onto a disk
Minute 2:40 : beautyfull
