    Ed's pushing to hard and is keeping the tip of the lance plugged. When you do that it's not cutting. The only time he's actually removing metal is when the sparks fly.

      Practice lol. You can see the stands they have set up to keep him going along the same axis as the pin

      They are pretty directional as long as you hold the rod straight they will go straight thru

      Lances never lose. The metal doesn't have the option not to melt.
