Hi Paul, super explore, you certainly worked hard on that one. Brixham was one of my old stamping grounds. You got to places I never got to, thanks for the trip. Ron

Glad you enjoyed it. There is so much to see in Brixham - I have a couple more videos still to come showing much more of the town, including an amazing, and little known beach.
      Take care,
      Paul

Good Morning Paul. What an excellent video. Very interesting history. It's such a shame that so little remains of the railway branch lines thanks to building development. Superb bridges that I too hope can be brought back into use with the proposed footpath/cycle way.

Glad you enjoyed it. Yes, although a short line is was an important one, particularly for fish!
Lots of bridges, cuttings and embankments on such a short stretch of line.
      Thanks so much,
      Take care,
      Paul

Hello Paul. Hard to believe that there was once a thriving railway through this area. Great job as always. Thank you.👍

Hi Paul. Having spent so much time in the area over the last 30 years. How am I seeing parts of Brixham that I haven’t seen before. Brilliant. Enjoyed the trail and all your info along the way. We are there again next week so if there is time might have to have a poke around some of these places. Thanks for taking us along. Have a great weekend. 👍🏻🚶🏻‍♂️🚶‍♀️

Yes, I filmed a few videos in the area, all very different. There is much to see there, isn't there?
Hope you have a fab time on your travels to Devon too!

Super video Paul. The park and gardens at the top were lovely. Thanks for all the great old photos, especially the one you ended on, the buffer which looked like it was on the edge of a cliff.

Once again I had to watch twice as I just can’t take in all the info first time round. I ‘m not complaining! Your videos are jammed packed with so much detail! And you put so much research in! I noticed you signed off with the buffer photo so you showed it twice! It really warrants being featured in a book or some publication! As others have said very precarious positioning!!!
Yes that railway was up far too steep a place to put a railway station. I didn’t realise Brixham was so steep.
Thanks again for including all the maps - they did help with the twists & turns of the track.
    Bonus catching ‘Omaha’ being moved.

      Thank you Diana!
Although I did not have time to go into detail, the loco 'Omaha' (built in the USA for its European War Effort during WWII, but spent 1947 - 1992 working in Poland) has a fascinating history, including how it came to be named Omaha in 2019. You can see it in action just two days later on one of the many videos on UA-cam about the Autumn Steam Gala on the Severn Valley Railway.
Yes, Brixham is essentially a series of very steep terraces - that's why it does not have a large supermarket, or any large buildings like that, as it has no flat land.
I have a video coming up which features the town itself in more detail soon.
      Take care,
      Paul

An interesting branch line, but as you point out, not the easiest route in or out of Brixham. Lets hope the reopening project succeeds, and makes a case for reopening Churston station.

    • @westcountrywanderings
      @westcountrywanderings  Рік тому +2

      Thank you Malcolm!
Yes, the situation regarding Churston Station (and Goodrington and Greenway Stations too) is disappointing. I think the issue is here that the P&DSR may not be willing to work with other bodies to reopen it, or allow volunteers to maintain the station, as that is completely against their Company policy. Maybe it could be compulsory purchased, but the enforcing bodies don't have monies for legal costs to enable that.
I do hope that at least part of the route can be reopened for cyclists and walkers though.
Thanks so much for watching and commenting 👍🙂
      Take care, Paul.

@@westcountrywanderings This appears somewhat inflexible compared with some other operators, e.g. Network Rail which has accomodated the Spa Valley railway at Eridge. It may also be short-sighted, if the stations are allowed to become delapidated, and tarnish the P&DSR corporate image.

It was a real pleasure to finally meet you after watching your channel for a while. I think you started on YT around the same time I did (early 2021) when I was then living near Dartmouth and working in Brixham.
I really enjoy your videos; sorry I don't have time to watch and comment on them all.
Take care, and maybe see you again at some point.

Yes, I was only vaguely aware of it when I worked there from 2017 - 2021, but it has gained prominece recently, with the exciting plans to reopen it as a much needed footpath and cycleway.
Thanks for watching, and your kind words.

Another well researched and presented video, Paul. Do you know if the railway project is being crowdfunded? A charity called ‘Sustrans’ carries out feasibility studies on these old railways, they have to be paid, of course. They determine the cost of reinstatement, overheads etc and present their findings to the relevant councils and sponsors. There is a similar project underway in the Cotswolds which I will be talking about in an upcoming video. Anyway, great views of Brixham and a very enjoyable adventure. Take care. Ron.

I don't know, I am sorry. They should have got full information on their website (link in the description).
It will be tricky to do in the built up area, but relatively straightforward in other sections.
I look forward to watching your video about the project in the Cotswolds.
Thanks for watching and commenting Ron.

      Paul.

@@westcountrywanderings I’ve had a look on their webpage and there is no mention of any online crowdfunding. They are doing local community events to raise funds and looking for volunteers with the necessary skills to do the track bed clearance. Well worth keeping an eye on that project, Paul. Ron.

Thanks Paul. I really enjoyed this video. I liked the gardens on the hill. I liked the way you filmed this, showing key parts of the old railway line with explanation and helpful map pictures. I found a short video of the Omaha on its way to Kidderminster, published on 13 September. Regarding the buffer ...did they really put it so near the cliff edge! ? I think of the train accident in Abingdon and it doesn't seem sensible. 🤔🙂.

      Thank you Cathy!
      Glad you enjoyed it.
Yes, a shame, like all of these lines, that it closed, but, I can understand why in this instance.
Yes, the buffer stops were right on the edge! I seem to remember that they were like that in Stourbridge in the West Midlands too. There was an accident there as well (in the 1980s, I think) , with a railcar perched periously over the road below.
The loco Omaha has an incredible history. It was built in the USA for the war effort in Europe, but after the war it was bought by the Polish State Railways in 1946 and worked in Poland right through to 1992, where it was restored, and ended up in England, then has been passed around the various heritage lines.
In 2019 it was named Omaha (it was previously just numbers) , because the owner of one of the lines, Peter Best's, father faught in the D-Day landings on Omaha beach.
      Thanks for watching and commenting!
      Take care,
      Paul

Thanks Paul. That is a good idea to call the engine Omaha in commemoration of Peter Best's father fighting on the Omaha Beach. Yes that is strange about buffers and Stourbridge. You would think they would put some distance behind the buffer .... in case an engine does not stop at the buffer..... as it should!

  • @davidberlanny3308
    @davidberlanny3308 Рік тому +2

Hi Paul, very enjoyable walk and really we'll put together with lots of old photos, I think, like most, that the buffers at the end of the line is the most evocative.
By the looks of things I'm sure the trail will become a reality. It's a big dose of reality when a preserved line closes stations of course this line has a totally different costs to meet than most traditional heritage lines. I hope a way is found to keep the station from falling to bits
I had a look at the history of 1466 and it's been overhauled three times in preservation now. Apparently this engine was involved in a near accident, the driver and firman set it underway and jumped clear and the engine ran on for 7 miles towards Kingswear before being derailed. I know you're down there now, just seen the new video on my feed, so take care!!!
I've never been to Brixham but only a couple of days ago my sister sent me a photo of herself on holiday there as a teenager. We've both got a lot older since then but I still see her mischievous grin every time I see her!!
Great video, well done have a great week.

Glad you enjoyed my latest 'Lost Railway Walks' series.
Yes, I do hope that the line can be reopened as a cycleway and footpath. It would be well used by locals and visitors alike.
I can't recall seeing 1466 at Didcot, but there is so much there, I may have overlooked it! I am sure I will return to Didcot at some point, as it is very easy to get to from where I live.
Wow! A runaway train for 7 miles! Eek!
I have returned back from Devon now, but I have many more videos that I filmed in the area, including one focusing on Brixham itself, which has much to offer the visitor. They should be appearing slotted in with other videos over the coming weeks.
      Thanks so much!
      Take care,
      Paul

Yes, Brixham is an amazing place. I have two more videos to come on the town, one of the amazing beach at Mansands and one on the town itself. There is so much content there, and it was one of the original inspirations for the channel.
Yes, the footpath is very much needed as the main road is very busy, and the paths are narrower - they even dissapear in a couple of places!
Thank you for your kind comments.

      Paul

Yes, it is dissapointing to learn that they (the DSR) have closed three stations, and have no plans to reopen them. It starkly compares with the Severn Valley Railway, which have just opened a 'new' station, despite having financial problems.
Hopefully that decision can be overturned.
Good to know that reopening the route as a footpath is a distinct possibility.
      Thanks so much for watching.
