  • From www.swimmingpoolsteve.com/pag... this video looks at the Hayward TriStar VS 900 which is a 1.85hp pump made for medium to high head applications. In this test we are looking at an actual example of the motor RPM versus flow rate (in gallons per minute) versus the power consumption (power and amperage). While every swimming pool system is unique this gives a great point of comparison to other pool pumps available and to give you a starting point for determining if the 1.85hp Tristar 900 is the right pump for your swimming pool.
    00:00 - Intro to SP32900VSP Tristar 900 flow & power consumption test
    00:44 - Begin test @ 750 RPM
    01:12 - Pump @ 1000 RPM
    01:41 - Pump @ 1250 RPM
    02:10 - Pump @ 1500 RPM
    02:46 - Pump @ 1750 RPM
    03:15 - Pump @ 2000 RPM
    03:43 - Pump @ 2250 RPM
    04:22 - Pump @ 2500 RPM
    04:51 - Pump @ 2750 RPM
    05:23 - Pump @ 3000 RPM
    06:07 - Pump @ 3250 RPM
    06:45 - Pump @ 3450 RPM (maximum speed)
07:45 - This is only an example - every pool system is unique

Unrelated to the video, but related to your linked article: I wouldn't recommend the Black and Decker because any power interruption, no matter how brief, will leave the unit off until you manually restart it. Which means when you go on vacation and the power goes out for 1/10th of a second it won't ever come back on. Incredibly stupid of them to program it like this.

Interesting! So based on GPM I am more then turning over my water once per day. I’m going to drop the rpm’s a bit and save some money 👍

Video idea: I have seen many people online, myself included installing gauges on the suction side and pressure side to calculate TDH. Using suction side vacuum X 1.31 and pressure side psi X 2.31 to figure TDH. Then taking those measurements at the given RPM's on the performance curve for the pump to calculate GPM.
I am curious to see how accurate this method is. With your equipment on your test set up you could do the same calculations and compare them to the flow meter you have.
If they are accurate this could be a more cost effective solution to checking flow compared to installing a flow meter.

You should’ve ended it by saying, “This is why single speed pool pumps are HORRIBLY EXPENSIVE to run and buying a VS Pump always pays for itself!

I have maybe 100 or 200 videos showing and convincing people to buy a variable speed pump...but I understand where you are coming from.

Wow, very interesting. How is the tank pressure only 11psi at max? My 2hp single speed pump has my filters (DE style 48 sf) at 18psi when i clean them.

Is this pump more efficient than the intelliflow vs3? Or the moov pump?

Can you please do a video on sand filter vs sand with glass vs cartridge etc. what’s the easiest to maintain vs costs etc. thanks:)

Any advice for a quality pump with variable speed for a small pool? These things are always huge and overkill. While the dedicated smaller filterpumps are always crap, have tiny baskets and filters, not powerfull enough for cleaning robots, single speed, etc

Hayward Super pump and maxflo both have a 0.85hp variable speed model which would fit the bill. Yes you are correct that many / most VS pumps are overkill for small pools. In general I woild say that equipment manufacturers do not cater to or make provisions in their lineup for small pools.

I have the same setup, but with 110v input. Does this pump automatically see the voltage change and adjust? Or will your flow be cut?

The pump is only pulling 624W.
