Fun fact: at one point Jordan Peele was considered for the role of the poop emoji. He said he'd sleep on it, but when he called Sony the next day to talk about what the paycheck would be like, they told him they'd already hired Patrick Stewart behind his back. Peele would go on to state that that level of unprofessional behaviour from Sony was, if not the final straw, then a significant factor that caused him to retire from acting.
At least he went on to become a director of much better things than this
And surprisingly still do acting, mostly in front of a mic and with his buddy Key in movies like Toy Story 4 (where they voice the characters Ducky and Bunny) and Wendell & Wild (where they voice the titular demons)
Oh wow, really? I heard the story of the role of Poop in this film setting off a chain of events that led Peele to switch to directing (heck, I think it was even mentioned in the comments of Sean's previous Razzie video), but I thought that it was a matter of Peele simply being insulted by the role so much that he decided to try something else with his career. Honestly, I can't tell if this is actually _worse._
The Emoji Movie marketing team missed 120 Days of Sodemoji for a family-friendly experience. What an embarrassing whiff.
A Serbian Emoji or The Emoji Centipede would've also worked.
I was a happy child. My life wasn’t an enchanted Disney film and being called princess was a term of affection rather than a plot required, corporate marketing decision. I could have lived the rest of my life content with that. And now you have left this thought in my mind. Unable to be unseen. Unread. Sorry Sean, but you can't return James Corden to the Brits: under our Consumer Rights Act, you had 14 days from delivery to notify us that you wanted to return him, which have passed.

But he stopped working in The Late Late Show.

I'm so glad that I still haven't watched a single frame of this catastrophe, and that I've only ever seen UA-camrs put themselves through it on their video reviews, so that we don't have to.
You said it!
Too bad for me, i have Little cousins
I sadly watched it out of morbid curiosity, and I have not seen it since
I saw it once and only once
Well technically by watching the review, which contains clips from this catastrophe, you have seen more than a single frame of this catastrophe 😜
He did it. He finally got to this monstrosity. For real I can’t imagine going through every Razzie winner for Worst Picture in historical order. Mad respect to you my dude.
"I've seen worse, but it's still crap"
That about sums it up lol. Poor Tony Leondis.
Considering how Leondis was among the hundreds of DreamWorks employees that were laid off amidst a corporate shakeup, I would not have blamed him for hopping to Sony Animation; regardless if it was a project as excruciatingly paint-by-numbers as "The Emoji Movie."
Can’t understand why Sean didn’t get the message of the movie! It’s simple: buy more apps. Without more apps your life is pointless after all.

"So rotten that you fell in love with it. That's just the way love goes"
Sounds like the hallmark of a toxic relationship, if you ask me.
....yikes.
One of the other biggest reasons why The Emoji Movie was hated is because they cancel a Popeye animated movie in its place.
Thanks to The Interview of all films
That's actually not true.
6 years late and people STILL believe that?
The movie was scrapped, yes, but The Emoji Movie had nothing to do with it.
Popeye was already dead because of the Sony hack by the time The Emoji Movie was greenlit. It was already heading into development hell under the old Sony regime, and when the aforementioned hack caused major management shakeups its fate was sealed, as new suits tend to kill the projects the old suits were developing in order to make the studio their own.
Honestly, it may not be the case.
What the Sony leak detailed is that nobody had confidence in Popeye because the character isn't as big a player in cartoons and comics compared to folks that came after his first appearance in Thimble Theater like Mickey Mouse, Bugs Bunny and the like, and he became harder to market as a result.
I pirated this movie and I still asked for my money back.
should have just gone to the crossroads, you would have gotten a better deal for your soul.
I can't believe that they actually got Sir Patrick Stewart to play Poop, of all things. I'm well aware of the irony, but he deserves better than to be used as a walking punchline.
I wonder... is he really devoid of alternatives? Me would think he's successful enough to reject certain offers. (But then again, so is Ian McKellen, and he went on to star in Cats.)
Patrick Stewart taking an easy paycheck? No, he’d never do that.
Some people need to understand British actors take jobs for money.
Something something his grandchildren
His role as Avery Bullock from American Dad had more dignity than this. And he was funnier in that show as well.
i remember when i first watched the posters i said something like "ok, we have the ditzy protagonist who makes a mess, the fat comic relief, the strong independent girl and the background character they really wanna turn into a meme". And people told me "how can you say this, the movie isn't even out"
It’s probably bittersweet for o be right in this case huh.
I remember when my partner and I joined a watch party with some former friends without realizing what the movie was gonna be. My partner ducked out the second she realized what movie it was (the moment the phone turned up during the opening credits), but I stayed out of sick curiosity. To this day I still say that my partner made the smarter decision.
This movie angered a lot of people because of how it was supposedly responsible for both the Popeye movie and a Medusa movie with Lauren Faust getting cancelled in favor of the Emoji movie
Hilariously one of the films chosen for television during the Queen’s Funeral.
I saw that on Twitter.

@DragonBat3625 Alas, our feature presentation.
Igor was a great movie, its kinda like psychonauts meets young Frankenstein
Plus it had an amazing old times music soundtrack witch was pretty uniek compared to all the other animated movies that used modern pop music
Yeah... I did like Igor too.
Yeah, Igor is such an underrated movie.
I liked the movie Igor. Sure, it’s no masterpiece, but it gives a nice twist on the mad scientist scenario.
Speaking of soundtracks, The Emoji Movie actually does have a good soundtrack. Not just the songs they used but the musical score by Patrick Doyle.
I mean, It did use pocketful of sunshine in the end credits, a song that came out in 2008.
THEY PUT THE EGGPLANT EMOJI IN THE "LEAST USED" HIDEOUT, if i remember correctly, and I got a laugh out of that
Keep in mind that this is the same animation studio that made Into The SpiderVerse.
That almost makes this film's existence worth it
and thanks to the infamous controversy of The Interview hacking scandal Sony Animation scrapped Popeye by Genndy Tartakovsky.
@@thecinematicmind BOO! I would've seen that. A Popeye movie by the same guy behind Dexter's Lab, Samurai Jack, and PRIMAL?! Sign me up!

2017, the year we got The Emoji Movie, The Mummy, Fifty Shades Darker, The Snowman, Geostorm, Justice League, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, Death Note, Pirates of the Carribbean Dead Men Tell No Tales, Rings and The Book of Henry
Geostorm: i have a low bar for disaster movies. i don't think i ever saw one i didn't like. i think THE CORE is amazing..... GEOSTORM BORED THE LIVING HELL OUT OF ME..
@Path Evermore Roland Emmerich's old producer directed it, so, the film had his predictable mayhem, without, his trademark sense of fun, awful, miserable, incorrigible.
Skipped nearly total, role-call.
TJ Miller is the main character?! I can barely stand him as a side character in GOOD movies and shows
No kidding. I love Gravity Falls and all, but Robbie is definitely not one of the better characters from it.
And I liked him as Weasel in both DEADPOOL movies.
He's not the worst thing about the movie, trust me. The writing and humor shred this movie to pieces without any help from the voice actors(they're even, dare I say... good? Decent? Oh well.)😅
Robbie is a bottom of the barrel d-bag
Such a crime to have him date someone as cool as Wendy even briefly
Especially since she’s awesome and so is Linda Cardellini

Thanks Sean!😀
A fine way to wake up, too! I was moody this morning but then I saw that thumbnail with Shaun's logo and a 💩 in my recommendations and now it's instant better.🙂
It's crazy how everyone and their mother has talked about how terrible this movie is at this point but there'll always be someone who can add something new to the table no matter how many times it's been reviewed already.
Give Sean an award, at the end of this review, he was actually able to make a joke about what people { for some unknown reason } have appropriated the eggplant emoji for, and made the joke funny, if that isn't the second most impossible thing to dividing by zero, I don't bloody know what is!
Oof! I am so sorry you had to sit through this monstrosity... Well done on the review though 😎👉👉
I don’t think The Snowman technically counts as a movie. It’s half a film, at best
Tony Leondis, the film's director, voiced the Laughter, Broom, and Pizza emojis, while Conrad Vernon (who co-directed Sony's 2016 film "Sausage Party" and voiced several characters in it) voiced a Trojan Horse.
I don’t know if it’s great timing, but James Cordon ended his show, I think yesterday(?), when this video was uploaded… food for thought (or an entree for horror)
Will the Late Late Show get a new host to replace him, like how he replaced Craig Ferguson, or is that show over, period?

which he ended up doing a Hotel Transylvania short film.
@@thecinematicmind An obscenely overrated franchise.
Honestly, yeah. Sean pretty much hit the nail on the head with the ending.
Thank god Sony would come out with Spiderverse a year later 😂.
9:40 "The story was about as well thought out as Elon Musk's purchase of Twitter" makes a lot of sense in terms of the logic
6 years later, and this film certainly doesn’t represent that powerhouse Sony animation is nowadays.
Watching Corden's emoji character get bottled after the credits was just the icing on the cake. If only our dreams were real...
2:40 Shaun The Sheep movie did the same releasing parody posters and they were funny. Also the movie was a very good movie.
This was a movie that tried so hard to make the message "just be yourself" and also "FEMINISM" that they couldn't make it work. Because they spent so much time making it seem like it was a bad thing to be a princess, that by the time she accepted being a princess emoji it just seemed like she was conforming not accepting herself.
But the acceptance message made more sense for the meh emoji, and you can't mix those messages without a lot of effort and better writing, which the movie just didn't have.
Also, pretty much every actor that graciously accepted their razzy came out better on the other side then actors that didn't, period. And The Rock just basically shrugging and laughing it off explains why he is so successful.
Never forget that Jackfilms was literally invited to the world premiere for literally shitposting so much about the movie
True dedication right there
TJ Miller promoting The Emoji Movie at Cannes is a sight to behold.
4:30 WHAT is THAT guy from?! When you said "deleted", I expected the Cybermen from DOCTOR WHO.
6:09 How can "Jailbreak" be an Emoji, which is basically an emotional reaction?
10:09 It means, as Beavis would say, "BOIOIOIOIOIOING!"
Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is such a good sport about these things, he is a national treasure. He did Scorpion King and DOOM, and got out unscathed.
10:28- This isn't too far off from why I think a lot of people genuinely consider this worse than Norm of the North despite this having a couple of decent jokes and competent animation while Norm had none of that. Though in that case, I feel like that's more due to everything about it, it being more recent, the subject matter, and its overall lack of quality make it a much easier target. (That and everyone keeps blaming this film for Popeye being delayed when in reality, Genndy gave up on the project to work on Hotel Transylvania 3, something Animat made an entire video talking about, yet I seem to be the only one on the planet who actually remembers that)
Facts, schmacts, the film's, bts, pedigree, generates the hate, it's bad in the way, that if a Steven Seagal film, and, a Denzel Washington film, were, equally bad, the, latter, really does hurt more, than, the, former, due to expectations, before, COVID, people always argued about what films, were, the, worst, and, the, most-disappointing.
I really liked Igor growing up! I can't believe Tony Leondis went from that to... this... what a fall from grace.
Yeah, Igor is such an underrated movie.
I still remember the first time i saw this movie, and I was drained so hard that I put my head on the promotional cardboard stand. It was a stupid idea from the get go, and unlike the lego movie which was able to prove everyone wrong and be a film everyone would love (except me at the time), this film was so apathetic about its quality and reception that it was insulting, especially with its own arrogance in the opening with Meh pointing out the audience's lack of attention span, and calling emojis "the most important invention in the history of communication". And that's what still gets me about it. It doesn't give one ioda about its audience, or the general filming public, and will do whatever it can to suck so long as it makes more money than captain underpants and kubo and the two strings. It's so derivative of other movies, it's almost plaigarizing, its humor is miserable with only one chuckle from the elderly being text emoticons (like :P or >:|), the writing feels so careless with characterization, blatant with how much it wants to advertise you stuff, and even a tiny bit misguided with jailbreak. And i wouldn't have minded it if it was at least enjoyably bad or bewilderingly bad, but the fact that it's boring makes everything that much worse. I can't even look back on it and have a laugh, it's just tedious.
Having said that, I still see why the snowman could be worse. Like i said, the snowman was more unfinished, and this one was more mind numbing. It's more of a pick your poison in terms of which you find worse. Seeing as i haven't watched the snowman, only seeing it in your review, I'm not sure if I can fairly pick or say the emoji movie was more deserving, but if it's enough to show other animators what a lack of passion and caring leads to, i won't complain about the worst picture win. It's still the worst animated film i've seen without a doubt, and yes i've seen food fight....and the LINT WAS A FLESHLI-
9:52 NGL when i first heard that line I groaned so hard my mom thought I was sick.
I love how after they made this POS (alongside The Star), they made Spiderverse and Mitchells vs the Machines. Anyways, next time we’ll be watching a comedy so bad, John C Reily and Will Ferrell couldn’t make it funny.
So bad, it makes you want to watch the bad seasons of the BBC "Sherlock" show just to cleanse yourself.
Should've named the poop Cornelius Robert Archibald Poop so that his initials would "C.R.A.P."

Man, that really aged....
Figuratively and literally
Not, to mention, that she bailed from, Mom, before, it, was, over, why, were, we given an extra season that truly had, absolutely, positively, zero reason to exist, no, seriously.
Thank God we got great Sony animated movies such as Spider-Man: into the Spiderverse and The Mitchells vs. the Machines after this monstrosity.
The only thing I'm curious about is how long Patrick Stewart took until he accepted the part and what was his expression when saying 'yes'.
I got the notification for this video while I was in the bathroom. Such timing
I'm fairly certain they nominated this movie purely because of the backlash: from older critics hating it for its topic, to younger critics hating it for being made by Sony.
It was the time when a yearly amount of public outrage started to become predictable, and that trend has continued to this day.
So really... they awarded a movie cashing in on a trend... to cash in on a trend. 😑
At least, the next year they went with some more obscure choices: Holmes & Watson, plus a bunch of other nominees that went under the radar.
In addition, The Interview hacking scandal which lead Popeye to be cancelled and replaced by The Emoji Movie.
And the fact that it insults the audience by claiming everyone who uses their phone has short attention spans 🤦♀️
@@gracekim25 Meh... do American people really take that personally? I mean, ADHD is a common side-effect of using your I-Phone too much.
Not exactly flattering, the comment, but nothing to rally me up either.

I'm pissed at Sony for scrapping Gendy Tartokovsky's Popeye for this. But at least they gave us Spider-Verse and the Mitchell's so we're cool for now.
It’s all thanks to The Interview of all films.

Now we need an animated film to win *Best* Picture!!!
Never gonna happen. The Best Animated Feature category was created specifically to keep animated films from being nominated for Best Picture. Because the Oscars don't think animated films and live-action films can stand on the same level.
Between this movie or Boss Baby. I would rather rewatch Boss Baby on repeat over this crap. The idea of an Emoji Movie was just completely stupid.
I kinda wonder if the "bidding war" was like the situation where Arnold tricked Stallone into starring in top Or My Mom Will Shoot by pretending to be interested in it, where studios wanted to make other studios think there was interest in the movie to see who would actually make it.

My guess is that someone involved in the making of this film either hated Star Trek : The Next Generation, hated Sir Patrick Stewart { or both } , and decided to strongarm, blackmail, or threaten to commit a terrorist attack if he didn't do what they said, and they used that power of extortion to force him to be in this film playing a literal piece of crap. Also, I hate The Emoji Movie more than I hated any of the other movies nominated by The Razzies or otherwise that year, but I still agree that The Snowman was worse for the reasons stated in this video and the video Sean did on the movie some years back. It's like how you may hate a certain video game for being frustrating, but in terms of basic state of being, Big Rigs will always be one of the worst video games ever made purely because of how the game is barely even functional in the first place.
