  • For George Clarke and Kerry McCoy of Deafheaven, it’s not the ritual of the creative process itself that’s important as much as the preparation before the process. Both men use a meditative and repetitive activity to prepare their mind: for McCoy it’s surfing, and for Clarke it’s often running or driving.
Clarke writes the lyrics for Deafheaven, while McCoy writes much of the music. For both, it’s all about putting themselves in the best possible headspace to make something. Surfing is a big part of McCoy’s creative process; he tries to go every morning because it’s one of the few times in his life where he can purely be in the moment. “No watch, no phone,” he says. More than a few Deafheaven riffs have emerged from his time on the water.
Clarke says that a workout-either the gym or running-is a good way to prepare, as is the drive to the LA studio in all its glorious monotony. Both also cite their manager Cathy Pellow’s strong cold brew as an important part of the ritual.
Deafheaven's latest album INFINITE GRANITE comes out August 20, 2021 on Sargent House.

I found these guys through New Bermuda and it was one of my favorite albums, then Sunbather and Dream House were the next songs i had on repeat. Though the new singles are totally different i actually like them even more. I've not liked a band this versatile since FNM and i'm really grateful to have found them at all. Its the middle of the toughest lockdown my country has had and their music is making it tolerable.

I have to say I have been a fan of Deafheaven from the beginning. Always been a massive shoegaze and black metal fan so these have always been my go to as they combine it so well. I am in love with their new direction.

it's so interesting, and i've said this before, but i liked the new album far more for the experimentation, than i liked NB or OCHL.
which i disliked because the experimentation felt like they were muddying the waters, things were far less defined than ever.
i was really into Sunbather, which was the first time i had ever heard that experimentation with black metal. then went and back tracked to the Bosse-de-Nage split, then i heard New Bermuda when that came out, which i didn't find all that intriguing for a long time.
then i went and back tracked even further to Roads to Judah, and was like "oh holy shit, they really started with the black metal vibe something fierce"...
then Ordinary Corrupt Human Love happened, and i felt like "i think i might be done with this band", after i heard the whole album. for some reason, it just was NOT GRABBING ME. when the singles had come out, i WAS intrigued. honestly, the singles were the best thing about that album, to me.
and then this new one comes out, and it's further away from black metal than ever. and it might be my second favorite album of theirs, if not full on favorite.
but i just feel like when they were doing all that experimenting, they were trying to test the waters, but starting with NB, it felt like they went out too deep, too quickly. and then they went in even more with OCHL, and by then it felt like it was doing too much.
      so i wrote them off.
and now they come out with this, and it feels like they finally hit their stride, somehow.
(i think it was because Kerry started to get more comfortable with water, by then, the surfer that he is now. :P )

This was really great! It was interesting to hear similarities in how they write and how me and my band go about it. Might be a reason I feel such a connection to their music! Would love more of these :D

What writer does George mentions at 30:37? Very cool interview a lot of insight into their process. The first thing to notice is that they are keeping in shape (gym, surfing, running). And that might also be a reason for the new more positive sound they are going for. I love this band and their new sound!

I love what they did with the three singles and how they sounded but I just wish they mixed it up with their old sound a bit more when it comes to the whole of the record. It gets boring in some of the pockets of the album. Still enjoyed it and the highlights of the album stay on repeat.
