  • Oggie Don Gardner, KC3RDV, has questions about feeding a dipole. He doesn't want the coax hanging down in the middle of the yard and is looking for options. We look at center-fed dipoles, off-center-fed dipoles, and end-fed dipoles.

    A 49:1 balun on ebay is about $30 and will work fine, or you can make one for $15.

    What’s the “3 feet from house” for? Lightning? Can it be 4 or more feet? My inverted dipole ends about 5-6 feet from my house.

    Does electrical installation tape effect the signal being received and sent at the transmitter if you put tape at the connection. Please can you let me know buddy I would appreciate it

    I heard somewhere else that end fed horizontal antennas can cause more of a shock hazard inside of the shack than non end fed antennas. Is that true? If so, what should one do to avoid that? Thank you.

    How does the antenna perform when the feed point changes? I always put mine in the center because I imagine that would be the best spot because it’s the shape of the radio wave.

    I use a myantennas 4010 EFHW run horizontally from the corner of an elevated deck to a tree. No counterpoise. Very stealthy in my HOA and it works GREAT! 73 de KC3NFV

    If MyAntennas advises to put a pole up in the middle of Their end-fed antenna, You can just as well use a normal dipole and feed it in the middle, using a balun also. Just use a piece of low stretch wire. This will be much cheaper than the 9/1 or EFHW 49/1 transformer on a end-fed antenna.

    It may be true that it doesn't matter where you feed it if you match it to get all the power to the antenna. But for someone like me that is new and living on Social Security, matching it to get all the power to the antenna is not easy. Saving for over a year or more to get HF radio, then Saving longer to get what it takes to get the things needed to match the impedance and what ever needed to get the maximum power to the antenna is a bit much! A center feed fan is easy to make and put up. Yes you need to be smart enough to not cut the coax when cutting the grass. But if you can pass the tests to get your license you should be able to know not to cut your cable when cutting the grass. Each person has what is needed. I need the lowest price! I have some wire and a way the antenna up high. I may have an antenna up before I can get a radio to put on it.

      Congratulations on taking the DIY route. I can't believe people pay such ridiculous prices for a commercial wire antenna, the price of lazyness.

    How much power is lost in the balun?

    • @RobB_VK6ES
      @RobB_VK6ES 3 роки тому +1

      If the transformer is WELL designed for purpose losses will be small.

    • @forgetyourlife
      @forgetyourlife 3 роки тому +1

      At qrp levels a lot cause you don’t have a lot but at 100 watts it ain’t much at all.

    • @RobB_VK6ES
      @RobB_VK6ES 3 роки тому +1

      @@forgetyourlife Can't get much more QRP than a receiver and designers have little aversion to including coils and toroids into them. It is all proportional, a given dB loss is the same % loss at uV or MW when no resistive losses occur and the core is not magnetically saturated. In fact theses two factors play an increasing counter productive role as power is increased. You might also include the wide spread adoption of the EFHW by QRP portable operators as a counter argument to your assertion.

    • @forgetyourlife
      @forgetyourlife 3 роки тому

      @@RobB_VK6ES the wide spread adoption of efhw by the portable crowd is mainly ease of use. But these debates can go on forever either way. There’s always someone who hits a guy with a tribander 80ft in the air 10 states away and thinks their 26 gauge random wire is “gettin out”

    Hi Dave,
    Very good...
    Speaking of antennas, did you get your mfj loop back on the air? Hopefully working well.
    Also, what happened to you Stepp-ir? You said it was out of commission a few vids back, but didn't elaborate.

  • @ProperLogicalDebate

    49 to one Balun is a whole bunch. Can many be added like resistors, or inductors in series which I suspect, or are they like capacitors in series? 73 AG7MW

    • @RobB_VK6ES
      @RobB_VK6ES 3 роки тому +1

      It makes little sense to connect a number of units up. To effect different transformation ratios simply change the turns ratio of a single transformer ( Dave mistakenly calls it a balun here, the EFHW is not a balanced load. The core is not a balun, the core and windings serve as a transformer an auto-transformer to be exact) It's sole purpose is to transform the 50 ohm impedance of the feedline to whatever feedpoint impedance the antenna is presenting in order to minimise SWR. Remember the impedance transformation is proportional to the turns ratio^2 so a 1:1 ratio gives a transformation of 1x, 2:1 gives 4x 3:1 gives 9x 4:1 gives 16x etc.
