I grew up in this area. Brighton and Howell are ten miles apart. Howell is conservative. It is very safe. Brighton has become more urban. It is hopping. Both are great!
Property taxes can be high depending on the city/county for sure. But if you're comparing it to states like NY or CA we are not talking apples to apples.

I think the downtown and shopping in better in Brighton.
That said we are closer to Howell.
Love the area.

Low crime, friendly people, not crowded, small towns with lively downtown areas, don't have to go far to own acreage.
