Shouldn't you read every single word your "opponents" say? Shouldn't you want to understand everything that motivates their voters? Or are they deplorable ? My daughter is a primary school teacher. Last year she taught year three and out of a class of thirty children sixteen had special needs. She had a TA most days but only in the morning. One child held a pair of scissors to her eye and she had no adult to help. She had a responsibility to protect the other children in her class and had to send a responsible child to the office to get help. Schools definitely need more money so that more staff can be employed. Teachers need less paperwork too.
Johnson is a busted flush. The Tories really are getting desperate. I look forward to their oblivion in the next 24 hours.

I love listening to you guys, it makes politics really enjoyable. Well, I've just voted and it was Lib Dems, tactical voting as usual, I'm in Somerset and it's either LD or tory. My heart's Green and I want Labour to have a huge majoriity, I like Keir Starmer, and the LD's in opposition. I'm sure I'm not the only one in this dilemma! Getting rid of the tories is the one thing I'm sure about!
I can second this. I'm a Canadian, West side of Toronto, and I've really enjoyed the conservation and analysis by both Rory and Alastair. In listening, I had no idea that many municipal level items had to go back to Whitehall in the UK. In Canada, despite the fact that we are a Westminster style parliament, towns, cities, and municipal entities are the sole jurisdiction of the provinces, and the cities, towns, and counties have more leeway in spending priorities. I believe this is the "devolution" debate brought up. I also find it useful when Alastair and Rory give insight into some of the workings of the UK parliament, as it makes me more curious as to whether the Canadian context does the same, or does something different.
I love Rory. I could never vote Tory, but Rory is wonderful, grounded, and decent.

If I were Starmer I would consider elevating him to the Lords and give him Overseas Development or some other brief where he has a passion, where he could successfully operate across the political divide.

As someone who has been presiding office at the polling station and supervised a group of tables at various counts it’s quite nerve wracking with the candidate and helpers watching our every move. I always tried to have a bit of banter with the candidates and team. Well done another good video.
Thanks for all you do. Observation of the count is so important for transparency and trust in the election process. I watched many counts as an observer which was a real privilege. And I could testify and I have never ever seen a rubbed out pencil cross!
@@SandraT1107 me neither and all this rubbish about late delivery of postal votes. A voter can obtain a replacement postal vote up until 5pm on the day of the election. Usual media scare mongering without checking the facts.
We had hustings in Lichfield Cathedral. The Daily Telegraph correspondent left halfway through because "there wasn't enough conflict" - the candidates and audience were polite and respectful. Media just want drama, not policies.
Johnson is far too lazy for a whole 6 weeks of campaigning!

I always voted Green because Rory was my mp and he had such a huge majority he was never going to lose. Tactical voting against him was pointless so I went with trying to save the greens deposit. Having said that he was a good hard-working dude with integrity. Despite him being a Tory I didn't hate him.

J O'B did hours on how people felt after Bojo was wheeled out by the Tories...ALL about covid, such sad stories of losing their loved ones. First caller said HE was desperately chosing just 12 people to be at his 16 year old son's funeral whilst Johnson partied , another lad who called in couldn't get through without crying because his dad died without them while Johnson was having jollies in number 10, I cried with him by them, it was so emotive !

The most high stakes election was 2019 imo. That would be my opinion even without COVID but considering that, the stakes were far higher than we even knew.
Hi Rory, I worked ifor many years in a college for teenagers and young adults with learning disabilities. Before one election I gathered together a whole bunch of leaflets from the range of candidates. I gathered a group of students who were interested in voting and read them each of the leaflets, and showed them the party symbols. They all then picked the leaflet they wanted and took it with them to the polling station. From there it was in the lap of the gods. I do know one student with an ardent lefty Labour mother was delighted to vote Conservative.

they need to stop banging this drum that the Conservatives were the architects of the Phonics programme in education. It was introduced initially in 1998 and became a fundamental aspect of reading in the mid-noughties during a Labour government. The big "adaptation" the Conservatives made was to introduce the screening check... quelle surprise the Tories love a test. It's like praising a government for introducing SATS. The only reason phonics is any kind of "success" has nothing to do with any government but because of the tireless work made by teachers to ensure that pupils do not fail the screening check. And although phonics has made significant strides in children's reading, guess what it has also led to? A drop in spelling standards. Giveth with one hand, taking with the other. And this is something the Conservatives have done nothing to address.
Yes spelling is being really neglected. I don't think they think it matters?
Maybe we'll all be writing phonetically in the future. Oof.

Why has our species still not managed to recognise that selflessness and cooperation is in everybody’s best interest and chosen leaders who share that belief.
Britain moving to a proportional electoral system would be the best thing for British democracy. Hopefully Starmer has the balls to do something significant with the gift of this massive majority.

You forgetting something. That little detail known as the monarchy. I dont think that is going quietly. It absolutely intends to press its agenda upon what it thinks is its dominion. Proper democracy cant function under that hence the system we have.
If you want to address fundamental problems with Britain's version of democracy you have to square the circle of the in-built English majority that drives British policy regardless of the concerns of the evidently lesser members of the union.
The best thing for British democracy would be to abandon the union and to let the individual nations govern themselves.

It won't be difficult to do that, the tories have fucked up the country so badly over the last 14 years. The press will wait a couple of months and start acting like the state of the country has nothing to do with the previous government. I think it would take two full terms to stabilise the country and patience will run out before that, labour will probably lose a lot of seats at the next election because one term isn't enough to fix all the damage of the last 14 years

We need to have a “none of the above” option on the ballot paper. People want to register their dissatisfaction with the political parties and have that counted.

Can’t help but like Heseltine (Europhile, took down Thatcher). Jon Major was/is a good man. Ruth Davidson was pretty good. Austerity and Brexit sank the Tories.
@@tufty7026Clarke was the only tory to vote against accepting the referendum and set the fiscal ground work for new Labour. Chris Pattern has been extremely vocal on Brexit and did a wonderful job in Hong Kong prior to hand over securing rights, even if China has since gone back on the agreement.

I would have loved to see Rory as PM when he ran. But now I'm glad he didn't as Boris destroyed the Tory party and I'm eternally grateful. It's a shame as I think Rory would have been a brilliant PM.

Unfortunately elections are not decided by the votes of diehard supporters of one party or the other. They’re decided by the floating voters, who are influenced by how a political leader is performing. Sadly, I believe Biden needs to step down in order that a candidate who can beat the odious Trump has the chance to build a campaign. But, right now, Trump looks like winning. That is an appalling prospect.

I think all parents with children in state schools will be well aware of the state of the education system - the extreme pressure on teachers which often is visible with high levels of teacher illness, state of school buildings, lack of funds for anything...

@@danh9905no they’re not, it was tons better for us normal people under Labour, nhs at all time high, I was part of a scheme introduced under them to work in conjunction with ambulance service to pick up the elderly fallers in our area which was a good incentive as saved paramedics diverting to fallers who weren’t hurt and minute Tories came in they scrapped it along with libraries , swimming pools , youth clubs, sure start centres, tv licence for pensioners but they did raise pension age by 6 years which quite a few of my school friends never made it to and this is along with all their other punitive measures too many to mention. Labour were not perfect but at least you felt safe because there would be a net.

UK economy might go through a balance sheet recession, like Japan, or witness a slowdown as we see in China. Because, when the baseline interest rate falls, most firms deleverage their balance sheets, instead of increasing CAPEX(Capital expenditures).
Economist Richard Koo has already described this in detail concerning Japan and now China in many of the podcasts which are available on UA-cam.

During my break at work today I listened to the three people on the next table to me state that Brexit was a con (they all voted to leave) and they were going to vote for Reform as they liked what Farage had to say.

As someone who's worked as a deputy polling station manager in 3 Australian elections (local, state, federal) it's interesting how different the UK general elections are run.
What differences do you notice?
@@adrianthoroughgood1191 in Australia we do the initial count of ordinary ballots in the polling station straight after it closes. For a federal election we do the first count of House of Representatives ballot papers then allocate the preferences for the leading two candidates for that electorate. After that we do the Senate “above the line” count.
We report the count results through to the returning officer over the phone then do a full reconciliation of ballot papers before resealing the boxes and transporting them back to the Outpost centre. The reconciliation accounts for all ballot papers: whether they were issued or not issued.
The declaration ballots (cast in polling stations by voters registered in other electorates) and the postal ballots are counted at the outpost centre.
In the polling station we generally have scrutineers present for the count - they are party members/ volunteers who are pre-approved by the electoral commission. We won’t have candidates present at a count.
We also have preferential voting.
And compulsory voting with a negligible fine if you really didn't have any excuse not to vote.

They are absolutely dreadful. Voted for them in 1997 a couple of times expecting something positive after 18 long years under the awful Tories but instead we saw Labour emulate the Tories and wreck the country on multiple levels, we are still suffering to this day. Dont let them back in, you will regret every minute of it.
Under the Tories we saw them close libraries, sure start centres, swimming pools, youth clubs, take music, arts and drama out of schools and given this is probably our biggest export and makes money for the country is downright bizarre. Homelessness rocketed after 2010 and Tories coming to power but during Labour years crime went down and so did homelessness. You could receive ema for your child to attend college and there were lots of free adult education courses so you could retrain plus working families tax credits helped too. Pensioners received free tv licences which Tories have removed and the Tories have made us work another 6 years to even get our pension and of which several people I was at school with never made it to. So please, please do not believe the post above as for normal people Labour was really good, not perfect, but you had a safety net.
In terms of communication and demeanour something I noticed was that sunak was trying to appear more serious (to a theatrical extent) than Starmer. In the debates sunak tried to take a very straight talking home-truths sort of tone. It didn’t really fit well with what we’d seen of him before in parliament. He’s mostly either combative and angry or mocking and jeering. Trying to level with the public and suddenly look more serious than starmer just came across pompous and delusional.
Yeah and that tone that he tried to hit was then contrasted with his petulance when shouting over Starmer in those same debates. It made it even more clear that it's an act when taking audience questions, and one that he couldn't keep up when he sneered at the question-giver at the end of the Question Time special
Rory is just too much of a decent human being to be a Tory. Can't believe he still is really.

This is an ageing population election which isn’t about education or unemployment. It’s about pensions, tax and social care. Issues for older voters.

Seeing Boris rallying speech this week reminded us why the Tories will be crucified on the 4th July 2024. It started the day Cameron announced the BREXIT vote, Gove wound up Boris, May, Boris,Truss and Sunak played their respective roles in this farse, why did this happen? The majority of Conservative members are right wing racists, if Sunak had followed Cameron, they may still be in power, there is no substitute for intelligence, equality, honesty, loyalty, trust and compassion. Sad to say, Tories RIP. Time for change.
