He was certainly the most influential president between Jackson and Lincoln, and he essentially doubled the country's size and influence with the annexation of Texas, the Oregon territory, and the southwest. He left office as a popular man and only didn't run for reelection because he campaigned on only serving a single term. (Plus dying 3 months after leaving office didn't help.)
