Paddy's DIY- How To Fit A Restrictor On An Aluminium Window
Hi I’m Paddy and in this video I’m going to show you how to install a window restrictor on narrow frame windows like aluminium and some hardwood windows.
The enhanced window restrictors that are normally fitted on PVC windows don’t generally work on narrow framed windows, because there is not enough room on the window frame for the restrictor to fold up when closed, and gets jammed. So we fit this simplified version. This is how it’s done.
First thing I would say is to take extra care when fitting restrictors on windows above ground level. I don’t have it on the drill in the video, because I literally just got the drill that day. But tie a cord or strap of some kind around your wrist and onto your drill. To prevent accidentally dropping it.
This is an aluminium window that requires a restrictor. On a big top hung window like this, I’m just going to pick one side to fit the restrictor on. So I’m going with the left hand side. So this is the restrictor and screws I’m going to use.
These are the screws are self-drill screws. They have a drill tip for drilling through and screwing into metal.
The restrictor catches onto the stud and is spring loaded to catch automatically when the window closes.
Choose a position on the sash to fit the restrictor. The closer you fit it to the hinge the wider the restricted opening will be. Remember that the maximum restricted opening is 100mm. This white plastic block is to make sure the window closes squarely. The restrictor fits nicely underneath it, so that’s the position I’m going to go for. Notice I’m pushing it back to the back of the rebate.
Next line the stud up on the frame pushing it out the front of the rebate. Line it up until the restrictor strikes the stud and fix with a screw. Test the restrictor strikes the stud and fix the last screw. Test again it is releasing and catching.

Hello Paddy, Thank you for showing how to make windows safer. You mentioned about UPVC restrictors is generally not suitable for Aluminium windows due to striker . Is it because of the width or thickness of the striker? Sorry ,I'm not very good with DIY where I live.

In the majority of cases the aluminium frames are very narrow. The uPVC restrictors don't have enough space to fold up in the aluminium frames and get jammed
