Great take! It’s a masterpiece because it is so much more than a “devil movie.” Excellent script, acting, cinematography, etc. Love your comment on the grittiness of 70s movies. There’s a flat muted visual quality that is so appealing. I suggest “Don’t Look Now” with Donald Sutherland. The trailer alone is terrific.
Yup. In fact, the form of the devil almost becomes window dressing. Having all foundations removed is the root of the horror; the foundation of medical science, the foundation of maternal protectiveness, the foundation of faith. Take that all away and we're all, relatably, left terrifyingly helpless. Thank you too for acknowledging the stellar turn-in of Jason Miller.
To me the scariest part of the whole thing is the demon was just fucking with them the whole time. It could have just got up at any moment and killed them. At the end when he comes back to the room it's just giggling after killing the older priest. It’s just a scary thought. Also I watched a detailed break down, where during the course of the movie different things around the house change places, meaning it was fucking around the whole time. Apart from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre I've never seen a movie portraying such an evil entity in a realistic way. It's an incredible piece of documentary film making.
I hear ya. I feel that way about Zombie movies now. They are all medical beginning. I wish they would bring it back to the supernatural in some way. I think it would make it more terrifying. FYI im a Christian as well. I love horror
My ex-BF couldn't handle the medical scenes. Those didn't really bother me. The crucifix scenne and the sounds for it bothered me. I think men are bugged by the medical scenes but the bloody crotch scene definitely touches something in the female psyche that I don't think men can relate to, except as observers. Just an observation... My mom's favorite scenes were the opening ones. (you forgot to mention the AA winning role of Lt Kinderman, as Lee J Cobb played him, and made him as more of a human and not just a nosy detective....I know he probably got the AA because it was, I believe, his last film.) Good review. I was afraid this was another one of those AI videos that people keep flooding YT with lately, but I think not.

I’m very interested in your answer and how you would restructure the movie to make it way better than it is now you know because the devil is known by children so therefore not scary. … go ahead and make it better. Happy 51st Anniversary to The Exorcist being released in theaters. Dec.26th,1973-Dec.26th,2024 🤔 In my opinion it's a classic.

Raised Catholic. Not a horror fan. The Exorcist was alarming but very well done.
Have you watched Excavating the Exorcist here on YT, very interesting take on things particularly around the drunk guy at the house.
