I didn’t want a motocross bike. So I got the Fuel EXe. Much more like a mountain bike. I’m 65 and I used to ride a Sworks stump jumper. I just can’t keep up with my son anymore, so this is a great compromise. I still have to work my ass off to ride with him .
I’m 63 and been riding for 35 years. I feel like I’ve earned my EXe8. I did 20 miles in Vermont last weekend 1400’ climbing. Used 70% of the battery. Mostly level 1 (100 watts) on the power and occasionally level 2(175 watts). It’s all I need and I hope it keeps me going till I’m 70.
I have to say, this might be the best review of the Trek Rail-7. I have that same bike and I love it. Except for the first few rides, I try to only ride in ECO mode because I'm one of those who do enjoy the work on climbs. However, at my age, and other reasons, I found I couldn't make the climbs any more, or if I did, I'd have extended rest periods between each one. For those kids who say, just train harder....wait until you're in your 60's. Just wait and then maybe you'll understand. Not all of us need e-bikes, I wish I didn't but I do. My choice. My disappointments 1) The Bontrager rear wheel was a disappointment. I was 63 when I got the bike, weighed 227lbs and I popped 7 spokes in a year. Trek did warranty the wheel set but I ended up with a set of IBIS carbon wheels and they did make a huge difference and I haven't popped a spoke on them yet. 2) I'm not a fan of the computer. It registers high on both speed and distance. I've measured it and it's 8 1/100ths off of each mile. Doesn't sound bad but at 10 miles, it's 8 tenths of a mile off, at 20 miles, it's off 1.6 miles, at 30 miles, it's off 2.4 miles. That's a lot for a nerd who likes to track these things. 3) Being a long bike, it's kind of a killer making the tight switch back turns that are in the parks I ride. They're set up for hikers and bikes like my old 90's Litespeed hard tail, not a long wheel based/slack head tube bike. Oh well, it gives me skills training. Also, the assist cuts off as my speedo hits 19.4mph. All Bosche needed to do was give us the ability to enter a correct tire size/rotational distance for the rear wheel. But they cheaped out on the Rail-5/7 computers but kept the ability to turn on/off the non existent lighting system that comes on their city bikes. 4) Lubing the chain can be a chore since you can't spin the chain backwards (because of the motor just won't do it) and it's 53lbs, too heavy to life one hand, spin the crank and oil. So I have a pully system in my shed that lifts the entire bike. works great! Likes 1) The motor is fantastic. I usually only need ECO mode but Tour is next in line and can get me over most anything. It's easy to change on the fly. In ECO mode, I can ride 30 miles and not use 1/2 the battery. The only time I've run out was when I forgot to charge it after the last ride. When I ride with my wife, I don't even use power, on the flats, the bike doesn't really need assist and so I don't use it. 2) I love 29 inch wheels. They roll over stuff I could do in my youth (40's) on my 26 inchers, but at my age, I prefer these hands down. 3) The dropper seat post has changed my riding. I keep it lubed so it's always smooth action and it's great. 4) The cockpit is perfect. Brakes are good, I love my bike. My modifications were 1) Carbon wheel set - Yeah!, 2) I spent some money bought a set of Fox Factory 38 forks. 1/2 price on last years model. My gosh their great, but....3) now my shock was over matched so I bought a Rockshox Rigid shock. These were expensive upgrades but while I thought the bike was ok before, now there's no comparison. The rougher the terrain, the better the suspension eats it up. The bikes is great to start but with these, non inexpensive upgrades, the bike is simply amazing now. I'm 65 now and I don't expect to ever need another bike again. Maybe a batter some years down the road but not a new bike. Sorry, this probably isn't what you wanted for comments but you mentioned some of this and I thought I'd add my two cents as well. Loved your video.
Nice bike! ...The only performance items I would upgrade prior to a breakage would be the front damper on that Domain fork to a Charger 2.1, basically converting it to a converting it to a Zeb Ultimate Plus. I would also upgrade that rear shock to a inexpensive but quality coil setup, Marzocchi Bomber CR rear shock. That will give you a significant performance gain in suspension that's noticeable.
I ride a Trek Rail 9.8 gen 3, I have over 2,500 miles on it. I’m 72 at the Rail is awesome. Mine is fully built, FOX shocks front and rear, carbon rims, TRP’s, axs dropper, SRAM transmission etc. My videos are on YT. 72 and sending it.
I installed larger 38 tooth chain ring sprocket to reduce cadence on paved rail trails. I also use narrower gravel tires that work OK for most trail types. I have the Rail 5 with lighter 500mah battery...good for 30 miles in turbo mode. Love it !
I’ve got a 2020 Rail 7 and love it! I still enjoy riding my regular Fuel EX but for faster, longer rides in a shorter amount of time? Rail 7 all the way. Enjoyed your video, keep up the good work 👍
Nice looking spot! I guess you haven´t discovered walk mode on the bike yet. @@CrushedEMTB because stock rear wheel was relying on cup and cone bearings with metal cage between balls. Some customers had to warranty claim their wheels twice during two year warranty period. Once you had play in the hub (often less than two months of riding) you couldn't remove play from the bearings for more than a week of riding. Most of the cheaper trek bikes with 9mm qr rear wheels had the hub seal designed to prevent fixing the wheel once the play occurs. The cone had a metal sealing cup over it, making it impossible to tighten the nut firmly enough. Again some customers had 3 different rear wheels installed in their bikes. It is beyond me how is this cost effective for the brand. Apart from wheels, it was pretty basic. Finally they stopped selling 5, new collection starts from 7.

Rail 5 was one of the worst ebikes I've seen.
Why?
Lazy bike
😂learn to ride?😂.
I bet I would smoke you down the trail. Your avatar also looks like dog crap. Get a haircut.
@@CrushedEMTB ✌️😀✌️that’s because you prefer to RACE bikes and tend BREAK them a lot…. Where as I RIDE a bike Cross Country and always TAKE CARE of my ride. ( And I literally “smoke” when I’m riding, so that comment means nothing. ). Thank you for the compliment on my hair. Most men are threatened by its stunning texture. 🤪

ua-cam.com/video/GFkaWKHLWBc/v-deo.html Watch this. If you think I still need to learn to ride after that, then oh well.
Wow an ebike with a 1500w motor smfh. What is the point of that? My Boxxbike is a complete mountain bike with rockshox front and rear with 14k watts of power. THAT is a REAL electric bike which can be run in pedal assist or throttle only. This is such a waste of money smh.
You say that until you ride it.
@@CrushedEMTB its slow bro . Its for old ladies who want to ride paved trails smh wtf is anyone gonna do with 1500 watts of power if ur not going down hill? smfh lame
