Enjoying the game so far thru our mega campaign combining core sets and other expansions. Game group is a 7 and 10yr old and the forge cards are what keeps them wanting to come back. Great fun on a tabletop.
I've been really enjoying the game. Like you said it's really straight forward to get to the table, especially with the Arena mode. Each hunter plays differently enough that I don't find myself focusing on just one. It's unfortunate about the errors but they don't get in the way of gameplay in my opinion and they are sending out free errata cards which was unexpected but really nice.
I really enjoy this game. The quest system does lose its flair after a few times through the same starting point, but it is still a good time overall. I couldn’t get my partner into the video game monster hunter, but she really enjoys the board game of it. Looking forward in seeing what Iceborne has to offer.
My friend backed this and I look forward to checking it out. It seems like it captures the spirit of Monster Hunter. But I imagine you'd want a dedicated group to play it over and over to really appreciate the progression of gathering materials and building up your gear. That aspect and the pricetag make this an odd review coming from Chris. I often find his recommendations to be pretty frugal compared to my own and I distinctly remember skipping this one due to the cost attached to it, despite the absurd amount of time I spent playing MHW. Thankfully he mentioned Steamforged sent him a copy, because I can't imagine a world where paid what they were asking for it. MHW and Elden Ring are both videogames that I spent a ton of time playing, gotten excited when a boardgame was announced, then was turned away by the absurd amount of money SFG wanted for them. I would absolutely pay $400-$600 for an All-In pledge for either of those games. But for that I want all the maps from the games. Not the first one or two areas. Unfortunately I'm in the minority because they make millions in every campaign.
i would say the quality of the miniatures are just okay. there are too many horrendous mold lines. and some aren't even mold lines, they're like joints glued together in the factory (example, that horrible joint line on Anjanath's tail). this will be very difficult to fix, you almost need to re-sculp them to make them disappear. and the alternate miniature/pose for the weapons are mostly bad and horrible (chainmail set)
Also it should be in retail later this year Steamforged tells me, just FYI. I had guessed it was available now and I was wrong haha. They're projecting Q4 of this year (2023)
Yeah only weirdos do a 5 point scale! I can see why you do it though, a 3/5 feels significantly better than a 6/10, which I would never attribute to being a decent/good score.
Nah, 5 without decimals is better. It forces you to make the tough calls and it better represents a "gut reaction" to a game, an overall impression if you will, which better reflects a real reaction; at least in my honest opinion.
@@RoomandBoardReviews A 3-point scale gives as much actual information as a 10-poiint scale: Nope, It's Fine, It's Great! Think about it: is there any actionable difference between rating a game a 1 and a 5 on a 10-point scale? They all just say, "Stay away!" Although a π-based scale would allow you to have pie if it's just a hair better than "It's Great!" ... I might have convinced myself.
I'm a big Monster Hunter fan. Over 1000 hours in the system (don't come at me MH bros, I know that's nothing but it sounds like a lot to normal people), and I avoid Souls-likes because I'm not particularly good at games and know that the controls will replace monster hunter controls in my brain. But, I went for primal: the awakening for my first big miniatures boss battler. This is looking good, though, and will Primal ever actually ship? I might have to pick it up at retail at some point way down the road (definitely if it drops anywhere near the prices Horizon Zero Dawn has occasionally)
@@1AngelAlita For a fan of the IP, Monster hunter is such a good game. I hope you get to have a play through with someone to see what it's all about someday!
Not coming after you, that is a lot of hours. Me, I am looking at 7300+ hours with 20,000 Large Monster in MHW as of last night (on the Xbox, about 100 hours on the PC). So yeah, I am a fan of the MH series. I was really looking forward to the board game. I still have to think about it. @RoomandBoardReviews Thanks for the review.
nice vid, great review. :) any idea when this is hitting retail? (i skipped the KS since i expected it to hit retail, but i haven't seen it on shelves yet.)
Yeah I'm not too sure, I imagine pretty soon because most of the Kickstarters have now fulfilled. They likely tried to time it out that way. But I don't have a firm date - maybe just check out their website
I have been so pleasantly surprised by this game and it kind of makes me mad. I used to be able to ignore any SFG Kickstarter because their games have always been all flash and no substance. But now it turns out they can actually make excellent games. My wallet is worried.
To be fair dark souls is great with some house rules. Resident evil feels very much like the game had it been a multiplayer game. Devil may cry has an interesting idea though it just being an arena points run was somewhat disappointing.
I unfortunately haven't played Primal, so can't comment too much on that (and am fuzzy on the intricacies of it), but I think I would surprisingly pick Monster Hunter over Townsfolk Tussle. The gameplay loop feels a bit more action packed. Townsfolk tussle is a bit more upkeep with the bosses reacting in zany ways, and definitely gets points for more style and charm, but mechanically I found I enjoyed the card driven combat more than the simple dice rolling combat in Townsfolk Tussle.
Great review, thanks! You mentioned that it was for sale retail but I can’t find it anywhere. Do you have any information on when it will be available?
Addendum. After your first 3 monster you should be able to dish out 10+ damage per attack. Gun lance can easily do over 20 in one attack. Another reason it is really clear that all reviews of the game have been by people who played the game once. I doubt that anyone at steam forge games ever played a full campaign. If you have all in. Storage is a nightmare!!!
@@RoomandBoardReviews I used an Arkahman Horror Card Game box. Sleve only the instruction card for each weapon and use them as dividers. However after finishing the game, I don't see myself ever playing this again.
Honestly it’s very bad. I like Dark Souls and Bloodborne; I got the all in and painted all the monsters. I wanted to like the game, but after killing all monsters have to accept that the game sucks. Boss fights are boring. DS did it better, you have no tactical options. The only thing you control is your deck. Everything else is really random. Deck building is super limited. You have 20 cards starting deck. Upgrade a green weapon swap 2 for better cards. Purple weapon 2 more. That’s it. You will play a very very long game with the same 16 cards. Even legendary red weapons means get original 20 and switch 4. Bloodborne is way better. Got 12 starting cards and can change all 12 to something that specifically works for your weapon. Crafting….. hella sucks. It’s a super grind. After my third monster I stop filling out the sheet. Waste of time. Instead I would write what I needed and grind. You will have a cornucopia of useless crafting resources. Choose your own adventure is bad. It’s just random stuff. Cute 2,3 times. Then just skip, or skip the text and just read rewards; you might get that one piece you are grinding for. Game is too easy! Yes too easy. First battle is hard. First 2 star battle extremely hard. After that you should have a purple weapon. From there all monster are push overs until you get to legendary dragons. (5 star legendary not that hard; just need their gear) Rule book is bad, not terrible. Game components have tons of misprints. Some are just unprofessional, others affect gameplay like weapon discrepancies between cards and forge. Some misprints are a disaster like monster extra rules that don’t mean anything. Monsters that affect “Agility” probably refer to dodge. But you have to guess or house rule how to play. It’s bad, and it’s gets worst. The Elder dragon Negirante is just impossible rules as written. Either no one game tested or there are terrible rules misprints. Conclusion. Monster hunter gets Nothing right. Dark souls got boss fights right; the rest really bad. Bloodborne got deck building perfectly, exploration is awesome, boss fights meh.
Im curious how this game compares to Kingdom death. It seems like it has a lot of the same elements. Boss battle using AI cards. Crafting from parts you get from the monster, a hunting minigame. But lacks base building and allows "feints" so much less punishing. So probably a lot less "swingy" than that game too.
