  • We linked up with Max and Aaron to chat about the changes that have occurred since the last Say Anything mewithoutYou tour, the effect family has had on their lives as musicians, and the bond they share because of it.
Green Roomers is an Audiotree series where we meet artists in the green room before their show, and they share with us about any topic they choose.

Holy shit. So I went to school in Philly and went to see Say Anything, who I had been listening to for years back in 2005 or 2006. Mewithoutyou opened and I'd never heard them before. I was fucking blown away and have been a fan for these past 13/14 years.

Mewithoutyou is their own worst enemy. They could've exploded mainstream and shunned it. So much good music hardly anyone knows about. And then changed the sound because people liked it too much.

BuildingwithTrees out of curiosity... what albums do you consider the turning point for the things you have stated? I feel like they've had a fairly genuine and natural evolution... maybe it's just me? 🤷‍♂️

@@kineticblues2766 Foxes, that's the break out album. Mainstream air play, tons of press. They were positioned to explode. But chose a path of humility, and poverty. You have to tour, sign with a big label. Toorh and Nail could only get them so far. I understand where they were coming from with their beliefs. But these guys could've been opening for the biggest rock acts of the early 2000s. Arenas, not dinky night clubs.
Don't get me wrong, I love it all. And maybe they wouldn't have created the music they did without the struggle. I just think they missed a golden opportunity to be blessed financially. Although they would argue that they were blessed in immeasurable ways by going about it the way they did. And they would be right in saying that.

@@buildingwithtrees2258 Clearly going mainstream or being 'blessed financially' (however we define that) wasn't their desire or measure of success. It wasn't a missed opportunity, it was a deliberate choice to live out their beliefs and I guarantee not one of them regrets the decision. I think had Aaron become rich and famous he would have gone to a very dark place and possibly given up on music (if not life) altogether. They have families and own homes and Aaron got his PhD and they get to create and play music. I think that was kind of the dream all along.
