I second that. This has been very enjoyable. It's sad that you guys will be dropping anime for the foreseeable future, but respect for finishing Death Note.
Mello died just because of one act of decency. Had he been ruthless and not given Takada any privacy, he would have lived. Goes to show just how messed up you have to be in order to win in this show.

I don't think that's why he died. I think he wanted her to kill him. Why else remove the helmet?
We find out in the finale that Mello knew he would die and sacrificed himself to take down Kira. He wouldn’t have been dumb enough to remove his helmet if he truly wanted to live

Light is a psychopath, he doesn’t care about anything
The scariest thing about him though is how good he is at hiding that side of him. If the average IRL person were a regular NPC in that setting and didn't know everything the show told them, met Light, odds are they'd be taken in by his charm and charisma just as much as anyone else. Just like how Ed Gein, Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy, and so many other killers had a ton of respect in their communities up until their unmasking. Nothing is as scary as evil wearing a near-flawless mask of good.
He is a sociopath. He wasnt born with this lack of empathy. He went through a breakdown after his first killing, something snapped inside of him and he lost his humanity. Psychopaths are born that way and are unable to care, at any age
But yes, he is pretty terrifying if you think about it
Right after L died the task force found sketches of Near and Mellow while doing research on Watari and found out about the orphanage.
Actually they got them from a girl from Wammy’s house by the name of Linda who was a very gifted artist. They never mentioned this in the show, it’s just in the Manga.
I love Light as a villain. We see him in every light a good, well-written BBEG should be seen: cruel and ruthless, charming and sophisticated, cautious and scheming, and--on those occasions where he gets blindsided--childish and rageful. He's the kind of baddie who makes you hate his guts, but you still love watching him.
Anyone who genuinely thinks Light is the hero, though, is about as deluded as the people who think that Tyler Durden in Fight Club (if you haven't seen that, WATCH IT, it's amazing) is a really cool dude.

Spartan & Pudgey, I really enjoyed watching this, so I hit the like button!
Mello didn't sacrificed himself on purpose (and neither did L). They both knew the odds were bad for them at the moment, and they had to make a big move to change the game.
They knew they COULD die if something went wrong or if they didn't considered all possibilities, but they wouldn't go and die on purpose. They just made their move and lost the bet (L against a shinigami protecting Misa, and Mello against his own decency, letting Takada change her clothes with the towel).
But Mello DID risked his life to help Near. He wasn't in danger like L was, but he knew he had to make a move and force the other players to do something unplanned, or else Near could lose to Kira. He willingly risked his life, but he thought he had everything under control. He didn't even expected his friend Matt to be killed, let alone himself.
R.I.P. Mello, my favorite character after L died. A ruthless man, but in the end, not ruthless enough.
(Fun fact: I cosplayed Mello when I was younger. And had more hair. lol)
Mello read what Near was doing. Near took out Misa (first second kira). Mello took out Takada (4th kira). Now only Mikami and Light left. It's a chess move. One has to be sacrificed. Near couldn't have done it by himself.
Matt was another orphan kid that grew up at Wammy's House with Near and mello. They're foster brothers.

When Light killed Takada it had me thinking maybe he really did care more about Misa, since he took her out of his inner circle which protected her. When Light brought Takada into his inner circle her fate was sealed.
Pretty much all of his inner dialogue is exclusively calculating who he can use and how. Misa's memories _had_ to be deleted for his safety and goal, and without memories she could still be useful to him, at the very least as a distraction.
Light is true God by now.
For Light, there are people he cares for (his family, Takada, not so much Misa as he felt she was forced i to his life) but for him, anything that is beneath his status of being Kira or being the God of the new world is sacrificial. I feel like the last glimpse of "Light Yagami" is when Chief Yagami died. That last "Dad, no!" from Light is the last view we ever see of his humanity.
And for me personally, fuck Mello. I shed no tears for him when he got killed. After what they did to Sayu and killing off most of Near's group after immediately getting the notebook, I felt no sympathy for him.
Not sure if I'd call it "caring." It feels more like he's [as always] calculating that he 'should behave like he cares for them' to play his role. Didn't he say something along the lines of "I might need to kill my family if they find out" very coldly within the first days after finding the Death Note? And even when his dad only had a few seconds left to live Light's primary thought was to convince his father to kill Mello. His tears didn't feel honest to me, really.

Bro, Light is literally smiling while Takada is burning to death. He didn't care about his father dying either - he only cared about getting the information. Light doesn't care about anyone but himself.
@@shiv_ring I don't recall him saying that early on about his family, but he's definitely been corrupted at this point when he brought up the possibility that he may have to kill Sayu.
And the creator of Death Note did say that those were real tears from Light when Chief Yagami died in the hospital so his emotions in that scene were real, even if he was still in the mindset of trying to get Mello's name written down.
@@PinemartenMusic oh, he's definitely in full sacrifice mode by the time he kills Takeda, but Light does care even if it's to the mildest degree. He would've just killed off his whole family at some point through whatever means of the Death Note if he was completely gone earlier in the show. Plus, he was well into using the Death Note around the time that he and Takada were dating in college so me must have had some attachment to her, but over the years his God complex definitely multiplied.
Light has always been heartless from the beginning. Any action from him that looked like from his heart was always just a calculated act.

I find that light feels more evil and unlikeable in the english dub. The japanese voices make him feel a bit easier to root for.
Light is supposed to be unlikeable especially in the manga, though whatever version you watch you still have people still rooting for him in the end.
The english dub for Death Note doesn't carry the same tension that the original Japanese does. But reading subtitles is hard for you eh?

On one hand I also definitely prefer the original, on the other hand there's no reason to get personal for their preference - it's understandable that some would rather focus on other things as subs, esp. if one isn't used to reading them while trying to take everything else in, and doesn't have a huge personal preference for original versions/intentions of the original directors and cast. 🤷
