"TIN is SIN for Canadians" Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! After talking to my accountant and 2 separate law firms, none of them could give me this information. Thank You so much brother, I looked and looked, and YOU are the only one that actually explained that we use our Canadian SIN number, sub just for that :)
It’s not going to be too bad. It depends on the percentage of your viewers that are US based, but in my case I’m looking at about 1.7% of total revenue.

motion picture and tv royalties are for movies and shows that youtube sells for like 1.99 n stuff. and play partners are for music. that most likely does not mean you. I have clicked services and other copyright, because i also have a blog and get adsense revenue
I appreciate the advice! didn't want to miss the deadline, I don't make much off youtube, but it matters, subscribed! (Its finally Summer BTW! hurray!)
Frank, thank you so much! For those of us who missed it, what is the tax treaty number we use to claim the ITIN treaty? To claim it we need to quote the treaty article number.
If you click the box that says "My country has a tax treaty with the US" then it will give you the option to select your country and take care of everything for you :)
So after a long back and forth with UA-cam/Google support, it seems if you are a UA-camr earning income off the UA-cam platform then it looks like the Other Copyright Royalties option is for us. Here is what they said. "As a partner in the UA-cam Partner Program, Other Copyright Royalties (such as Play and UA-cam Partner Program) may be the most likely income type you will receive". I'm not a tax expert or anything so still do your own research, this is just what I was able to come up with.

It’s well organized - you just have to complete the forms in your AdSense account and it’s just drop downs that work automatically. In my case, most of my revenue will be at 10%

Holy moly, glad I came across your video. My channel just got monetized and if I didn't follow your instructions I would've gotten messed up by taxes. Thanks!
The part the confuses me is other sites say that if you're a Canadian and don't want the US to withhold your taxes you ALSO need to apply to the USA's IRS to get an ITIN by filling out a W-7 form (usually takes 4-6 weeks). So, do permanent Canadian residents & citizens actually in-fact have to do that part or do we just leave the "US ITIN" section blank and simply enter in our Canadian SIN in the "Foreign TIN" section?
Thanks for doing this. It was very helpful! So I did all that last year as we are a registered Canadian charity. Now they want it done ALL OVER AGAIN! We are still Canadian we are still a charity - that won't change. What is their problem? Any further advice?
@@HandsomeNature I’m not completely sure - but if we are monitized then we are selling advertising through AsSense - that’s income. What’s tricky is that ads are sold globally - so… does that mean we are running our business in dozens of countries? Each with their own tax laws? I hope not!
I’m not completely sure, but my assumption is that AdSense reports to the IRS and then they share information with the CRA. AdSense is US - so they just need to ensure they are following US rules. I chose 0% for the AdSense option & others options. is that ok? lol this is all so confusing. Does that mean I am not to be taxed because im a Canadian citizen?
It is a bit confusing- basically, you pay different tax rates on different types of income. So if you do livestreams and get money that’s different from AdSense money, etc. Also - it’s just withholding on tax - they aren’t making you pay tax. What you have to do at the end of the year is declare ALL income to Revenue Canada and pay the appropriate taxes - but a tax professional should help with that (I’m not one). For myself, I just keep track of everything I spend making videos, everything I make, and declare it all. This year I ran at a loss, but if I ever start making money - I do not want to run into trouble by not paying what I owe.
THANK YOU!! I was thinking I needed to get an ITIN from the IRS to fill this out. My big question now is: What happenes next? Are we able to claim tax credits on our Canadian taxes for the US tax deduction?
The “what’s next” question is one I’m still trying to figure out 🙂 It’s a withholding tax - so the theory is that it’s tax collected in anticipation of a future tax obligation. However - I don’t pay US taxes and hopefully won’t have to. So where will that money go. My biggest fear is that every country in the world decides to collect taxes on Google AdSense… I really don’t want to have to fill out dozens of tax forms or pay taxes to places I don’t live.
That will depend on how you structure your UA-cam business. It takes awhile to make enough on UA-cam to be a significant source of income - but an Accountant would be able to help answer the best choice for you.
Good question! Sadly, I don’t have an answer - however, they will have to provide us information on the deductions taken. That said - that money goes to the US government and not Canada - so it’s not money we can get back (unless you file taxes in the US). Effectively, it’s just going to reduce the money you make. So you claim less income.
No, there is no such document. When filling the tax income for Canada and for the local govt, just indicate the total earned amount for the year. May want to print the numbers in Adsense, there is an option to display the earnings for all months. May use an online software approved by the govt, it makes things quite easier, I use wealthsimple tax
@@Clearpathguidancetarot oh - also, if AdSense deposits more than $10,000 into your account I think it gets reported. Not a problem I currently enjoy 😉 one day!
Thank you - finding it almost impossible to find tax slips... they certainly don't make it easy even contacting their support team wasn't helpful so I'm not sure...@@LearningandTechnology
I'm from canada. Choose tax treaty and non resident. Then choose all 3 options and reduced rates for all. Choose 10 percent for movie production option and when you certify choose yes you receive payment from google services. Select current tax info as last option and not previous payments. Once done you will be 0 0 10 percent on taxes. You will have to claim entire amount on adsense in tax info for other income for canada when you file. Or if you have business number, gst you can deduct example, part of your home computer, internet bill, camera equipment and lights...... cost of editing programs... I claim as other income. For those who have not payed tax and hid it are screwed as IRS will be sending cra your income! If you fail to provide sin number for tax treaty youtube will hold usa taxes plus cra will tax you at 21 percent. Dont be a fool as you will not get back usa taxes so use the tax treaty.

I messed up filling out my forms then because mine says 30% across the board :( And I didn't know that TIN was my SIN so nothing was entered smh. I guess I will have to fill out new forms.
Hey i have 2 questions, im really confused about the Special Rates and Conditions. I can see in your description you mentioned the rates, but how come you chose 30% for your copyright default when they have a 0% Treaty reduced rate option? Also, we do have to check mark all of hem nonetheless right?
I selected the lowest rate in each category/ - I don’t produce a show or get superchat money - so for me it will likely be the 10% rate on AdSense. As I grow I’ll need a tax specialist to handle things.
When I try submitting my tax form, I keep getting a an error, [OR_SDP_03] I'm pretty sure it's a technical error and trying to submit at a different time is not helping. Is there a way to fix this?
Not sure if you can answer this question. Will Canadian YTers have to pay taxes again on the revenue from US viewers to Gov. of Canada? Or do we now pay US taxes on the US views and Canadian taxes on everything else?
Not sure actually - but I am responsible to(and plan) to declare all monies I make in UA-cam as income. Less legitimate expenses to create my content. The government is going to know what I made because I at least suspect the IRS will disclose that to Revenue Canada.
Unfortunately I think we will pay tax to Canada on the full income. It's what I did, I did declare the full revenue which comes about 80% from US viewers in my case.
@@Peppermint1 oh yes - we still have to declare all income. It’s just the withholding that will be low. Everything else is income and has to be declared in Canada as such.
@@CharTV0104 I know, it's brutal. I did go back in and claimed all the exemptions which brought the holdback down to 10%. Just looked at the tax documents submitted by Google and it looks like they did't hold back anything in the end.
Thank you, I thought that Tin was social insurance number but you just verified that. They are also asking for a GST number. I'm not sure what that's all about.
Yes, but don't you still have to get an ITIN to receive the treaty benefits? And that takes a long time... like getting a US social security number. Right?
Not that I’m aware of. Everything I read didn’t indicate that additional step. However, I’m not a tax expert - and my revenue isn’t at the point where it would justify the expanse of hiring one 🙂
I looked into it - your SIN acts as your ITIN A U.S. ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) is required by Canadians and other foreigners who do not have U.S. Social Security Numbers (SSNs) to file their annual U.S. income tax return to report any U.S. sourced income, such as rental income and to report gains/losses from the sale of property.
@@LearningandTechnology thanks but I am still confused. This document make it sound like w8 / ITIN is still needed for the tax treaty benefits.... and UA-cam needs this number from us. So, do we need to get the ITIN or is SIN still good enough to receive the tax treaty benefits? :(

@@Peppermint1 ah yes - I should have mentioned that. T4’s are Canadian forms. Google is a US company. No T4’s
Thank you! Very helpful video
my question is...does Adsense report to Canada Revenue?
I can’t say for sure - I suspect it wouldn’t be AdSense - it would likely be the IRS
@@LearningandTechnology ok thank you
@@Clearpathguidancetarot oh - also, if AdSense deposits more than $10,000 into your account I think it gets reported. Not a problem I currently enjoy 😉 one day!
@@LearningandTechnology I don't think that will EVER be a problem for me ha ha ha
Thanks for the info, this is really helpful.
thank you! much appreciated
Thank you, Frank!
Does anyone know if Google/UA-cam mails out tax slips to claim for Canadian citizens? A T4/similar?
They don’t mail anything out. You can get all your info from your AdSense account though.
Thank you - finding it almost impossible to find tax slips... they certainly don't make it easy even contacting their support team wasn't helpful so I'm not sure...@@LearningandTechnology
Thank you! This was very helpful!!!!
You do not want to pay 51 percent in taxes , if you fail to claim tax thru treaty in the end it will be 51 percent gone by next year in tax!
Hi! I was wondering, will youtube or adsense send us T4 or any document during tax season, so we can file it?
@@TinIgnacio no. You have to select analysis page and select 2020 and print summary for your records
@SunsetCurve right click on top picture and go-to your channel. Under logo is customize button. Select that then on left side of sceen your options to see analysis is there
I messed up filling out my forms then because mine says 30% across the board :( And I didn't know that TIN was my SIN so nothing was entered smh. I guess I will have to fill out new forms.
thank you for this information. helped a lot!
Thanks for the video! I just got accepted as a youtube partner and trying to figure it all out!
Congratulations!
When I try submitting my tax form, I keep getting a an error, [OR_SDP_03] I'm pretty sure it's a technical error and trying to submit at a different time is not helping. Is there a way to fix this?
Hmmm - sorry. I don’t know how to fix that one. Maybe try a different browser - that is a possible fix.
thank you so much. it answered some of my question.
The government is going to know what I made because I at least suspect the IRS will disclose that to Revenue Canada.
good question!!
Unfortunately I think we will pay tax to Canada on the full income. It's what I did, I did declare the full revenue which comes about 80% from US viewers in my case.
@@Peppermint1 oh yes - we still have to declare all income. It’s just the withholding that will be low. Everything else is income and has to be declared in Canada as such.
absolutely vital info many thanks
I'm Canadian and went through the form and did not claim treaty. I got a 90% hold back rate. I'll definitely be revisiting this form.
I did the same so my percentage is 30%. I will also need to revisit the form. It's all very confusing.
Is that all I have to do regarding Adsense tax? Or I still need to report that to the CRA?
The IRS is just for the US withholding - you still need to report income to the CRA - unless you want to get into big trouble! 🙂
Thanks Frank
A quick search brought me here. My channel is small but every penny helps. Thanks Frank.
Thanks Frank this was extremely helpful. They do not explain this very well 👍
Thank you 👍🏻 🇨🇦
Thank you sir for the info .
I looked into it - your SIN acts as your ITIN
This article is pretty good! It talks about using your SIN and is from Freshbooks
www.freshbooks.com/blog/w-8ben-form-canada-tax
@@LearningandTechnology thanks but I am still confused. This document make it sound like w8 / ITIN is still needed for the tax treaty benefits.... and UA-cam needs this number from us.
So, do we need to get the ITIN or is SIN still good enough to receive the tax treaty benefits? :(
@@mapletree4283 from everything I’ve read - and including the article linked above - my understanding is that the SIN is sufficient to identify yourself the the IRS and CRA for tax proposes.
