Sometimes parts of a neon sign lose their brightness, and become dull, even when the sign still works. This is a common problem called mercury migration, and can be fixed using the method seen in this video. It's simply a matter of rotating the sign in order to move the tiny ball of mercury from the bright side of the tube into the dull end of the tube. Once the mercury has moved into the dull side, and finally ends up in the very end of the tube (inside the electrode), the sign will brighten up immediately. If you think a neon sign has gone bad - it hasn't! It can be fixed easily, and will become bright and glowing once again!

Great video! Totally worked on my Pabst "this is the place". I got the white back, yeah! Over-the-head helps a lot to see/find the roaming mercury. Patience and a good grip on the sign too. Thanks a ton...

+rockindaddy9 It did, actually. The white 'Bass' section on mine was dull, and I could see what looked like a small bead inside, so I turned it on and rotated until the bead hit one of the electrode ends. It brightened considerably - not back to 100% new, but definitely better than when I found it. It also helped the white sections on another 'R Light' sign.
If you try it, I found the safest place to grip the sign is right at the transformer (if its an older sign), since thats where the weight is. Take your time, and make sure you're in a clear space with nothing to bump into. :)

I have 2 huge older neon signs mounted high on an exterior wall parts are dull one hardly on can you use a magnet to do this ? It’s not possible to rotate the sigh
if the tube in uniformly lite will you be able to see the tiny ball?

If the tube lights uniformly, in other words, if it is NOT dim, you will not be able to see the tiny ball of mercury, as it would have evened out and entered back into a gaseous state. That's the goal with this video here!
