People try to explain Soras stonger reaction to finding Riku again, compared with his lackluster reaction towards finding Kairi, with the wrong assumption that he didn't know that Riku was safe or even alive.
But since 'land of the dragons 2' Sora knew from Mickey, who accidentally let that information slip, that Riku was safe and active, unlike Kairi who he thought had been kidnapped.
Upon seeing Riku he cries and sinks to his knees, happy to finally see him again. Mind you that Sora was separated from Kairi and Riku for the same amount of time. But even with the information of Kairi being kidnapped, he barely does anything than reciprocate her hug awkwardly.

Sora is always so unbelievably excited to see him and to know he’s alright. When he doesn’t know if he’s okay, he’s heartbroken. And when Riku is around him he’s so much happier. Romantic or not, that’s love.

If you have read the novels, you know there is something deeper going on. Even if Sora is clueless about his feelings, Riku’s are super obvious.
In the KH3 novel even Kairi wonders why Riku cut his hair and if that’s how Sora likes it, and hence she cuts her hair. Why would she make that connection? I feel for Kairi.

I don't even ship them, I like their friendship a lot because in a lot of shows and games sometimes friendships are either undeveloped or can only get better when they start dating. Like those things never show the value of friendship, they only allow certain levels of intimacy when dating, so that's why I value Riku and Sora just being friends.
But if kairi and sora are supposed to be crushing on each other, then Sora and Riku have been married for 20 years because what is this large ass gap in the relationships. 😭
I know everyone has fun making Sora and Riku gay jokes, and I think they’re hilarious too, but realistically I just think that Sora thinks of him as an older brother. Someone he looks up to. The kid doesn’t have a family anymore and for all we know it could’ve just been him and his mother. Riku plays a huge role in his life, like that brotherly figure. His role model. they practically grew up together. So yeah I don’t see them as lovers or even best friends. They really are like brothers.
