16 Row Massive Potato Harvest with John Deere and Spudnik

  • Carl Taylor from Taylor Farms in Idaho Falls, Idaho, presenting Spudniks 16 row potato harvesting system. With eight 6 row windrowers and four 4 row harvesters they are able to harvest between 400 - 450 acres a day. The biggest advantage was to reduce tractors and the need of multiple operators from their harvesting operation. In addition, they were able to utilize their truck fleet and reduce bruising due to the higher capacity of the machines and fewer machines in the operation.

I used to drive a truck from the field to the shed in McArthur California.. We were harvesting potatoes for "French and Fry" who grew potatoes for "Granny Goose". Early 1970's. Haven't seen Granny Goose Potato Chips in a long time. Amazing what modern ag machinery can do. Our digger at that time had seats on both sides where moms and teenagers sat and separated the dirt clods. At the end of the season or the harvest French and Fry let the locals come in and pick up all the potatoes left on the field that were too small or just missed in burlap bags to take home. I thought that was kind of them and remember.

There are two types of people business minded and employee minded. Obviously there are a bunch of employees here that think it others responsibility to provide them a job. They will never understand that they are responsible for their own well being not those around them. Long ago this guys ancestors eeked out a meager living and struggled through the years trying to improve their situation day to day year after year to get to where they are today. Then you have these employee minded individuals that demand that this man give up a part of the years of struggles and the risk that they incur, so the ones who risk nothing can automatically have a job because they say so. These people will never understand what you said about starting their own business and there are millions of business out there to start. To start a business one has to find a need and fill it, but they are to blind to look around to see what needs to be done because they need someone to tell them what to do.

Great video!! Reminds me growing up WNY in the 60s. The farmer next to us did potatoes, and every year the migrant workers would come in & pick by had after they were dug up. The farmer let us pick thru the field when they were done!! Found some nice bakers & lots of smaller " salt potatoe" size. We ate potatoes for free most of the year.
