  • I wandered down to the village park on Saturday 23rd March 2024 to watch the first train of the year come through Glyndyfrdwy hauled by ex GWR Pannier 7754. Later in the day I witnessed 7754 leaving for Corwen with the last train.

Great to see steam back in the Dee Valley for 2024 - thank you ! Love the livery on 7754 (think I've seen a Large Prairie with the same livery and lettering) and I do have a soft spot for BR green (6430 in green with BR early emblem was lovely) 🙏

It was catalytic watching your footage of real steam trains in a landscape, after being used to watching your absorbing vignette models. That juxtaposition made me think how important sound is in conveying space. Whether one includes digital sound in a model or not, I found myself imagining that the opening scene at Glyndyfrdwy was a vignette model, and how the sound of the locomotive and train approaching, while "off scene" would be heard well in advance, literally heralding the arrival of the train, as well as describing the space of the landscape aurally.
Expanding on that, the way the sound "feels" the landscape it is projected into is fascinating. You have an opening 26 seconds of relative stillness, punctuated by birdsong (ignoring modern jet plane and microphone wind noise), followed for a couple of seconds at about 0:26 by approaching steam hiss, then at 0:28 7754 whistling. That sonorous whistle blast lasts about two seconds, but the reverberation and its fading, gently pulsing echo carries across the valley for another 10 seconds (if you listen carefully!). There then follows a period of about 10 seconds where the train would still be "off scene" and there is a still low, but building, snaking steam hiss only, then at about 0:48, like an actor appearing on stage, the foreground noise of locomotive light exhaust beat, steam hiss, clank and ticking, then the clatter and clang of the carriage bogie wheels on rail surface and particularly a rail joint just off view to the left.
Imagine adding that layer of sound onto one of your layouts!
So, as always, thanks in general for your thoughtful, and thought provoking posts.
    All best,
    Matt

Matt, that is a genuinely wonderful comment and reflection.
I often feel that sound locomotives - whilst enjoyable ‘toys’ don’t do it for me with layout sound scapes. I’ve experimented with this for a few video overviews and will continue to do so, but your thoughts echo with some ideas I’ve had previously on small cameos, notably ‘Fancy another beer’ here because of the idea of modulating the sound in different parts of the layout. Food for thought and energy for the soul. Thank you! Genuinely thank you.

Nice - my 'moniker' locomotive in action. Shame it's not in NCB Mountain Ash livery, but you can't have everything. Love the departing shot from above - very Ivo Peters on the S&D.
