In Chinese culture, what makes you decide to call someone with surname+Laoshi (e.g Liu Laoshi) or surname+first name (Liu Yu) or simply first name (Yu) or first name+ge/di (Yu ge)? In warewolf episode, I heard Keyu called Liu Yu by 3 different ways of addressing (Liu Yu, Liu Laoshi and Yu-ge (when Liu Yu brought them snack)). 1. Is one way of adressing more polite than the others? 2. Is calling only by the first name considered rude? 3. If Laoshi is not used, will someone who has extensive experience in a particular field feel offended? 4. Do we need permission from the person about how to call them, or is it up to us? 5. If friends call each other by surname+first name, does it mean they are NOT close? compared to friends who call each other by first name? (when Radio team practiced, Patrick said, "Zhou Keyu, have a seat" and Keyu said, "Keyu is fine") does it mean Keyu considers Patrick a close friend? I'm sorry I ask a lot.😅 Thank you 🙏🙏

It's usually used when there is a power dynamic of someone who knows a lot more/has a lot more experience to pay respect. Then it would be full name and then -ge. 2/5) Full names are generally used when the person only has 2 characters to their name (Chinese like using 2 syllables) so you would never call Liu Yu just Yu, it would be Liu Yu, or Yu ge. If you have more than 2 characters the surname can be removed e.g. Zhou Keyu becomes Keyu, removing the surname would indicate a little more familiarity but it's not anything drastic (teachers often address students with their dropped surname if they have 3 or more characters in their name). It is not considered rude. -ge means older brother and -di di means little brother in Chinese so I guess it might be considered a bit weird (I don't think rude) to refer to someone with these suffixes if you aren't close. 3) Depends on the person. 4) Both? Do you ask someone to call them 'bro'/'homie'/'friend'/'brother etc. in English? It depends on the person. Some people will not want to be called Laoshi if they are close to you in age etc. so it really depends on situation

My first non-series exposure to Chinese celebs was Xiao Zhan & Wang Yibo's bts or interviews (I'm 2 years late, it's not even funny 😂). I was so confused about why they called e.o Laoshi. The number of hours I spent watching Chinese shows in the past 2months is massive, (thanks to online schooling 🤭) and I've fallen in love with lots of celebs and lots of show formats, but these questions have nagged me for weeks. Thanks to you, I finally get the gist 😁 it's so fun to know, for example, that Chinese like to use 2 syllables, or that there's nothing profoundly meaningful about dropping surname 😂. I really appreciate your explanation, thank you 🤜🤛

An example would be Xiao Zhao calling Wang Yibo “Wang laoshi” and WYB calling XZ “Xiao laoshi” in some of their interviews. One of them debuted before the other in the music industry, and vices versa in the film industry, but only by a few years in both cases. Besides they’re relatively close in age and quite good friends so they call each other that more to tease one another, and to self-deprecate (it’s Chinese humour, so a little difficult to explain).

So, your explanation makes it clear😁 Can I ask more, please? What about nickname A-... or repeated last syllable? For example, in the Untamed, Shijie calls Wei Wuxian, A-xian. Irl, Xuan Lu sometimes calls XZ, Zhanzhan. Here in Chuang, almost everyone calls Hu Yetao, Taotao. Why not 'Xianxian' or 'A-zhan' or 'A-tao'? Why one way and NOT the other? or maybe, is it okay to use either?
