    Getting to be very few of us geezers who can/want to build old flatheads. Thanks for the upload series. There's good iron in those old castings.

    I didn't look all the way through, but I am surprised that no one mentioned that the old dude should maybe have taken his watch off before starting this rebuild. I could see and hear him just slamming the face crystal watch face against the inside of the block. But For all that excellent knowledge he just gave all of us for free I'd be glad to buy the guy a replacement face.. Really helpful in the job I was hacking my way through.

    I would suggest fitting the oil pan and oil pump after the valves etc are installed just in case something is accidently dropped into the motor.

    Seems like you would set the valves a little loose as they would tighten up pretty quickly as the valve seat and valve wears in. I mean you have to remove the intake to adjust the valves anyway so...........Nice Build

    im working on building a performance Briggs Flathead engine lol

  • @GK1918
    @GK1918 6 років тому +1

    We adjust valves with no crank. A modified steering wheel bolted to the cam. Next bottom end and pistons. Oil pump pre lubed and pan goes on. Turn engine over fill with oil . A cam adaptor spun by a drill untill oil pressure comes up. Also we like to spin the cam with drill low speed and a final valve gap check as thow engine idling. Install cam gear intake ready to run. Thing I do not under stand is torqing heads 3 or 4 times times a thousand out the door daily. Don't think they had a thousand people just torqing heads? or maybe they did?

    BlownFlathead,
    I took off a head to measure the cylinders to determine the cid. It was "freshly" rebuilt thirty years ago. It is indeed a stock 239. It was running fine before I took things apart.
    1st, do I need to replace the head gasket? It got a little bent removing it.
    2nd, I noticed a few head bolts were different lengths. I didn't notice until they were all out and I don't know which ones go where.
    3rd, do I need to chase the block threads before reinstalling....chase with what tool?
    4th, any other advise is highly appreciated.
    I love this series of videos!

    • @blownflathead
      @blownflathead  7 років тому

      It is always a good idea to use a new replacement head gasket and chase the treads. Also use sealer on the threads. See pages 9-6 to 9-7 of "Ford & Mercury Flathead V-8 Identification & Rebuilder's Guide". Which bolts go in which holes will be obvious when you set head and bolts in place.

    So I just watched a video on how a flathead works. And why they were replaced with OHV engines in 1954. My question is, with the inherent airflow/compression problem these have, why would anyone build/use one? Nostalgia?

    • @blownflathead
      @blownflathead  5 років тому +1

      I would have to say nostalgia. The dictionary defines nostalgia "as an unexplained yearning for the past". However, the flathead really does dress nice and can perform. See other movies on the UA-cam "Blown Flathead Channel" or at www.roadrunnerengineering .com .

    is the number 1 piston on a flathead still the front one on the passenger side like the present day pushrod motors from ford?

  • @ddd228
    @ddd228 7 років тому +5

    Wow. The 4 exhaust ports are Siamese into 3 ports?
    How does the exhaust ports go out side of the head?
    I'll watch more.
    Very cool that the engine has TWO water pumps.

    • @MrGGPRI
      @MrGGPRI 7 років тому +1

      The FH Ford exhaust ports are in the BLOCK traveling from the top to the bottom of the block; this caused so much block heating (especially the center 2 into 1 port ) that a big oversized radiator and dual water pumps was needed. This all was OK as long as all was like new and in working order but if not, you had an 'ol Faithful geyser on your hands. Another defect was that the crank had just three main bearings instead of the usual five for a V-8. These defective designs started in 1932 and went on thru 1953 before it was "discovered" and replaced by the
      Y-Block OHV V-8 in 1954. Cadillac and others using the flathead V-8 used good engineering practice with five mains and also ported the exhaust out the top of the block right next to the exhaust valves where the intake manifold is usually located, this created minimal block heating.

    • @ddd228
      @ddd228 7 років тому +1

      MrGGPRI: Your explanation is excellent!
      I see how that engine is flawed,now.
      Insert smiley face here.

    • @herman452
      @herman452 7 років тому +2

      Most of the early fifties OHV V-8's also siamesed the center two exhaust ports, including Olds, Cadillac, Studebaker, Pontiac and Packard. Being overheads, of course the exhaust didn't run through the block like the flathead Ford V-8.

    • @herman452
      @herman452 7 років тому +5

      As for the flathead Ford's "defects," it's true that the exhaust routing wasn't the best for engine cooling (although it looked better than running the exhaust out of the top of the block), but the three main bearing crank wasn't really a "defect" - the V8 was naturally shorter than an inline six or eight with the same cubes and its crank was therefore more rigid and could get by with fewer main bearings to support it. At least at the horsepower levels a stock flathead made. At three times the stock hp level, the three mains are not so great. Still, it's amazing how much hp some guys are making with these motors (especially supercharged), and they actually can last for a while. . . .

    • @chaytonruijsenaars3971
      @chaytonruijsenaars3971 7 років тому

      well you learn something new every day i guess, i always kinda wondered about that exhaust port through the block like that, it makes sense that it would want to get real warm, i would have designed it with the exhaust coming out the top and down the back, like the intake manifold had tubes that ran down to the intake ports and then it had a cast manifold next to it, it could however cause the intake to get hot and it have preignition and stuff, i guess if i ever start making engines ill figure it all out

    So the rope seal on the front doesn't need to be soaked? Ive heard from a few sources your supposed to soak it for 24 hours

    • @blownflathead
      @blownflathead  6 років тому

      It depends on the seal material and the supplier recommendations. I like "Best" brand seals and gaskets and they don't recommend soaking the rope seals.

    • @vector6977
      @vector6977 5 років тому

      You know US manufacturers used those rope seals all the way into the mid 1980s.
      The GM 4.3 V6 used it from the start.

      Strangely I’m a music teacher and a science teacher. I have a little bit of experience with the LS engine as there is one in my C7 Corvette. It is lots of fun and my daily driver. I live in South Texas out in the middle of nowhere. My son and I love cars. He is a Staff Design Engineer at Tesla motors. I’m afraid his model Y dual motor is faster 0-60 than my Corvette!
