I like all 3 Guernica albums, for different reasons. In an old interview, Koji Ueno explained that Ohta Keiichi (the lyricist & graphic designer) and himself tried to make albums that would go back in time, both visually and musically. The first Guernica album is supposed to represent the 1930/40 period. The second is 1910/20 and the third around 1890. This is why only the first one uses synths (industrialisation/machines), why the second has, sometimes, a big band/club/cabaret feeling and the third a very somber grand orchestra vibe. By the way, let's not forget the "other" great projet by Koji Ueno and Ohta Keiichi : Ohta Keiichi's own project for ¥en label "Jingaidaimakyo" (inspired by an old japanese adventure novel) which sounds much more like Guernica's first album : ua-cam.com/video/5RIO2CY3DTs/v-deo.html
I have to disagree with those who say this album is in some way inferior to the first album. The first album is quirky, weird in a fun way, but this is sublime, the orchestrations are top notch and the writing is incredible. There are definitely elements of classical music borrowed here, I can hear elements of Struass, Herrmann, even Bacharach melded in here along with more traditional Japanese music. It's a heady mix of beauty and intensity and I can't wait to hear album #3!
Hello. I'm Japanese and I'm a longtime fan of this band (GUERNICA). As a Japanese fan, I'm glad that you praised this band. Thank you very much! The band has great performances and songs, but also great lyrics. Written in the language of about 70 to 90 years ago. The content of the lyrics is also the background of the times. The costumes are also old (by the way, this CD was released in 1988). It is said to be a "legendary band" in Japan. The third CD is here. ↓ ua-cam.com/video/JMLQ7STWhIY/v-deo.html After the third CD (released in 1989), the band went out of action, but the three members are still healthy.
@@captaintogawa9736 I don't try to decide, they're very different albums and have their own unique qualities. They're equally good but for different reasons in my opinion. I just wish there were more than 3 albums, I need more!
The first Guernica album that features real instruments, but unlike their next album, the synths (albeit a bit more diversed here) from the first album are still here, just not as present as it was in the first album. However, the low quality from the synths in the first album (which is actually intentionnal) is completely gone. Like Eric said in his description, it's not as memorable as the first album BUT, Jun did a phenomenal job in this album. Of all albums from Guernica, it's actually her best performance imo. Overall, it's a really good album by itself, just not as phenomenal and creative as the first one.
Apart from his many solo albums, Koji Ueno also revisited a lot of his Guernica tracks in special projects like "Koji Ueno Trio" and "Koji Ueno Quintetto", where he revisits, in an exotica/jazzy way, a lot of his old tracks...
@@ericrhodes5174 I've been watching this video for so long that I've seen the picture this comment refers to and have returned to see it has changed after 5 years 😅
Thinks this is more exciting to listening to then the first one, even if the first one was more interesting maybe. great act, thanks for uploading so I could discover it. This ablum as some great Elfman vibes, or the otherway around maybe.
Eric Rhodes btw, I forgot. You should add Jun Togawa 戸川純 was on these albums singing. I believe she is more famous then this band. She was mostly the reason why I checked it up.
this album is far deeper and more masterful than anything picasso ever made
so glad theres a new comment im honestly happy to know people still find it beautiful ❤

I had a moment with Jun Togawa and all of her projects, thanks to your channel. Very thankful for your efforts :))
I'm happy you like it. There is more stuff on my now semi-defunct 2nd channel if you haven't seen that already.

Got this off slsk as well as the third one and this one is pretty good if you want something that sounds less like a nintendo game.
Best Disney princess soundtrack ever.

Most people who know about Jun Togawa already know that she was a part of Guernica, that's why I didn't mention it.
+Eric Rhodes Believe it or not, the third and last one is my favorite. Less frenetic, much more dark and almost fascistic in it's stark delivery.
(am american) dug deep into Sheena Ringo, see commentary saying Togawa Jun influenced her, so got into Jun-chan, finally getting here :P
Coincidence and much luck
僕は日本人ですが、大学生の頃に行きつけのレコード屋サンから"君ならコレ好きじゃない?"ってオススメされてハマりました。
