- There's no point in having accurate firearms if you can't test them. One thing that helps many shooters is a rest. Today, Roy Huntington shows you how to make a quick and easy version with scrap wood.

Yes, more of these sorts of handy instructional videos. What a simple and nifty bit of kit. I can leave 3/4 of my shooting bags at home, save a little volume and save a LOT of weight. Notice I did NOT say "sand bags." I buy garment bags and zip pillow covers and fill them with white rice or pinto beans. Less weight and less messy than sand bags. Last, Roy H is at presenting these videos.
Thanks for your kind words. I’ll be doing more of these. Next up is a shooting bench from a big wood cable spool! Roy
This is awesome! If you have this, a little sand bag and a foam yoga block, you can adjust to anything you need.
Just wait until you see what Roy makes in today’s video!
This was a cool “behind the scenes” at Roy’s Ranch and Shop. Keep them coming, please.
He's out there living the dream, isn't he?! Thanks for watching.
Thanks Rob! I'll be doing more soon. Roy
Nice old Ranchero, Roy! And thanks for the idea.
I do enjoy my old car! Roy
Love that Ranchero!
Might as well! I’ll be in the shop making caster plates for my band saw and I have the scrap. Why not!
Great video, please continue to with this type of video,,,,Thanks!
Going to make several of these for sighting in purposes for the Junior Rifle club I instruct with. Thanks!!
As a woodworker and a shooter, this was a great video. Not quite as complicated as the rocking chairs and grandfather clocks I have built but every bit as effective for it's purpose. I'm going to build one today and try it out with my .454 casull.
Thanks Alan. I do suffer from the “over-build” syndrome at times, so I tried to keep it under control for this one! You might enjoy the target frame vid, rifle rest, etc. vids in my shop. Roy
Sweet. Great for airguns too!
Absolutely!
Great video simple but effective
Thanks for watching!
Awesome idea! I am going to make one of these!!! More of these please!
Now that was cool. Now this gives me something to do this weekend
Don't forget, you have to try it out with several units and make modifications to personalize it.
@@callawayken650 I've found a sort of smaller one (like that original one in the beginning of the vid) and one a bit wider is handy. And they're so simple they do make great gifts for your buddies, and great raffle prizes at your range, boy scouts, VFW, etc. One fellow I know makes them by the dozen and the local gun stores sell them. Roy
Great idea. I will be making one.
Yes, a simple portable shooting rest for various firearms that can work for all of them. Mr. H, thank you for the video! I really liked it!
Thank you for the idea. Just finished assembly of one. Will probably a hand hold slot on each of the tall portion and round the edges of the sides. .d
Hand slots are a great idea Dave! Roy
great idea! you have a beautiful place and shop
Thanks Bill! Caught me about to go to the shop to do the maintenance on our mowers and tractors. A great place to be, I admit! Thanks for chatting! Roy
Just found your channel, Love it. SUBSCRIBED
Thanks KWay. We’re ramping content up too as we speak. I have videos on the Ruger Security .380, the new EAA Short slide Hi-Power and even the Hi-Point new 10mm handgun. Lots more pending too. Roy
Great idea how the placement gives you different heights, great video, thank you. I would enjoy these types of informational videos on reloading and gunsmithing.
Gary, I laughed out loud when I first saw this rest. "How easy is that!" I thought ... but had never thought of it! I'll be making more like this and others. Roy
Thanks for sharing Roy, what a great idea! I’ll definitely be making one as well. Would enjoy more videos like this, I too enjoy spending time in the shop
Will do Jeff. I had no idea anyone cared one bit! I have a bunch of ideas and I’ll get right on them. Roy
@@fmgpubs Thanks Roy, I’ll be looking forward to them!
Great idea and that target holder with the wheels looks interesting too. By the way, I have a pair of suspenders just like that, same color.
I can’t live without ‘em. Plus they make carrying a gun on your hip much more comfortable! Roy
Here’s a short vid I did on that target. I made it and welded cheap wheels on the bottom since I got tired of dragging it around! ua-cam.com/video/v4J3iKF5UR0/v-deo.html Roy
Mate... just came across your channel looking for a diy rest for my Henry lever action. This is JUST what I was after. Excellent idea... and presentation. Now a happy subscriber from Oz. Cheers 🍻
Thanks sir! I lived in Canberra when I was a kid in the early ‘60s. Loved Australia. Used to go rabbit hunting with my dad on stations nearby. A bag of 25 or 30 in a morning was the norm! Roy
@@fmgpubs Thanks Roy. You are a long way from Canberra now!…… and that's also where I live! You probably wouldn't recognise the place now. But still the odd property to hunt rabbits. No so many rabbits around nowadays after the Calici Virus was released to reduce their numbers... but still lovely countryside to walk and hunt. Take care. Regards
@@outdooraussie6355 When I was there, they were just filling the lake (Burely Griffin?). I used to love the War Memorial. Thanks for touching base! Roy
@@fmgpubs Nothing wrong with your memory Roy... yep Burley Griffin! Being ex military, the War Memorial is very special to me. Attend the Anzac Day Dawn Service every year. Keep up the great vids. Also, very impressed with you Chevy 'ute' 😉👍
Heck, you had me looking for a piece of scrap plywood before the end of the video!! Thanks Mr. Roy, it shall be did. Might even make one for my ex-brother-in-law, once removed. I also like the idea of dressing them up a bit for other people. Keep'em coming. But since you mentioned it....I hate to get greedy right off the bat here but, how about showing us how to build a heavy duty, long lasting, non-messy, aesthetically pleasing (just kidding about the last one) sandbag to go with our brand new rest???
What a good idea. I have an idea for an easy one. Roy
Just my style!
Go make one Tom! Roy
Great job, thanks. I’ll be making a few for X-mas gifts. Two questions for Mr H.. What does he prefer to fill his shot bags with? And, can we get a review of some quality suspenders?
Mike, I like to use lightweight stuff like rice or dry pinto beans. Makes things easier to lug around. I’ll work some suspender info in down the road. I also like the Dulth Sideclip suspenders. Roy
It serves as a kitty bed as well. 😂
Everything seems to serve as a kitty bed …. Roy
What are the dimensions of the end pieces on the rest shown at the beginning of the video, please?
Gosh, not sure on that, But you could estimate using my hands, arms as a rough guide. It’s really not critical and you can make it as wide or narrow as you like, and make the side pieces as big or small as you like. Roy
I love these helpful vids Roy! They’re great to watch and learn. I just recently got the Cimarron 1885 High Wall Lever Action Centerfire Rifle, & need help with putting another sight on it for distance. I know they have several to purchase, but I live here in Missouri like you and am not sure which one would be good for our terrain of mostly 100yard shots but sometimes further. Can you help? I’ll send this message along with my info to Brent. Thanks Gene Eldon Mo
Gene, check out Skinner Sights online. I assure you you'll find something you like. I bought a Turnbull 1885 and installed a tang sight, mostly because I like the look and tradition. But a simple Skinner rear aperture would work great. Let me know how it goes. Roy
@@fmgpubs thank you so much for the direction. I love these old time guns. I’ve bought so many lever action and single action fun ones the past few years. I can’t get enough of them. 🤠
@@fmgpubs well Roy, I went with a Marbles Tang Peep sight and screw set. I found them on Midway. They’re on the way and I can’t wait to install them. I like that traditional look as well. Should make for an interesting deer season this year! Thanks Gene 🤠
@@geneyohannan8382 A perfect set-up for that gun. Simple and attractive. You're going to love it. Roy H.
Beautiful land. What state? Our dream is to buy a plot of land for ourselves.
Missouri, just south of Joplin. We love it here! Very affordable land and homes. Four seasons too! Roy
Put $.10 in a jar today. Double that amount tomorrow. Then double that again every day for a month. Then, take the jar and buy the land.
@@callawayken650 I've never regretted tightening the belt to get this place. Your advice is sound! Roy
@@fmgpubs oh nice. We are in North Florida but want a farm. Can’t wait!!!
@@fmgpubs Same here. Only regret, I should have got the acres next to me as well.
I find it silly that before I watch this video no have to sit through 2 anti-gun political ads.
Darn youtube does what they want with the advertising. It does make me crazy sometimes! Roy
