How did you know I was obsessed with my BMI?? That’s crazy! I’ve lost 65 lb on Wegovy, but am 10 lb away from my “healthy BMI goal weight”.

You and I are the same age but I’m an inch shorter. You’re right, it is so hard to lose the weight! I was up to 186 when I first started taking weight loss meds, and they’ve helped me lose weight. I didn’t want to take them at first but I’m glad I changed my mind.

Really helpful Dr. Dan! You are speaking to me. I have lost 90 pounds and realize I am EOSS Stage 0 and even through my BMI has me in the overweight category, I feel great, I look great and ALL my obesity related issues have disappeared!

That is amazing! So it is a question - what will more weight-loss really do for me?

Omg the “not good enough” is so so so pervasive. So pervasive. From my physical doctor at least. I’m lucky to have great mental healthcare providers.

I think I'm stage 1-2, particularly because of psychological impact. Not really because of physical symptoms except that it just takes more effort and sweat to do things than if I had been a more average weight. The stages are an interesting way to look at things.

Hoping I can keep it off now that my insurance decided no weight loss drugs for anyone. With meds alone (Metformin - Saxenda - Wegovy) I have lost 35% of my initial weight. I started weight lifting again (I have to be careful because of a particular and rare exercise intolerance) and I think I'm getting some body recomp (inches changing a lot faster with very small amounts of addtional weight loss).
I really need to buy new clothes but need to see if and how bad things rebound. Glad my doc was focused on being along for the ride rather than what number I needed to hit. I had about a 2 year plateau and I did recently start dropping some weight again.
I'm hoping maybe I lost enough at least some of the underlying physiology may have shifted (if that is possible) and it won't be so hard to maintain weight like it was when I was bigger.

I always knew the BMI was bunk. it cannot apply to everybody, example, Mexicans and Fillipino persons are very short and have wide bodies, all of them, would not match the BMI index. And I never have either. I am tall for a woman and have a large bone structure, hence I wear size small or X small in clothes, yet I weigh 170 lbs , thanks to strong muscular legs (I bike a lot) and never had a small waist, I'm not built that way as a woman. so even when I was very sick with gastritis and dropped to 140 lbs, my bmi said I was obese, yet I looked like skeletor!

I am currently at 24% baseline weight loss, first Ozempic, next Mounjaro. And I am only at 5mg, so a lot of space to continue performing well.
If you are motivated enough, achieving more than averages is realistic :) And probably delaying your best lifestyle can keep that focus better in many cases...

I agree, BMI is a lazy method of assessing health risks, and a poor predictor of same.
A co-morbidities-based assessment system, like EOSS, is far superior.
The main thing BMI might be good for is differentiating the risk between a sub-25 BMI individual and obese or overweight one over time. But, who cares? That’s pretty easy.
Would also assume that ppl with extremely low BMIs (sub-18) also have an increased risk of mortality. That might be an interesting vid in and of itself.
Especially considering that, while fairly rare currently, someone who was only overweight but had a different sort of eating disorder, AND was a high-responder to WL meds, could use same to hit and maintain an unhealthily *low* body-weight.
Particularly with *ever more powerful* WL meds on the way. This seems like more of a future problem, but a problem nonetheless.

Dr. Dan, there is one subject that's totally unresearched. Would you be able to spill some light on it?
There are charts showing weight gain once people stop using Oz and MJ. But nobody really measured well how quickly the sensitivity to these drugs recovers once you stop taking it...
In other words, I saw a woman claiming she switched from MJ 5mg to Oz 1mg for a month hoping to recover sensitivity to MJ. Once she got back on MJ 5mg, she didn't feel any improvements in appetite control and had to go higher to 7.5mg...For her it was a failed experiment and no sensitivity recovery...
I did the same thing for a month and I have a noticeable improvement of sensitivity...5mg wasn't enough for me before the experiment and now 5mg works really great again...
Knowing those variables is like knowing Hubble constant for astrophysics, a piece of critical information about our universe...
