Thank you so much! I found this to be very helpful and after seeing a lot of things that other subs didn't mention that they would keep in their bag, yours was very different and more teacher worthy in a sense as you are ready for anything! I am starting my first year supply teaching and searching through youtube for helpful videos. The board I am with is on reduced hours and smaller classes so I will be doing a lot of travelling! Hope you have a great school year :)

That’s a really cute calendar btw. Good idea to mention brining that to check your schedule. When I supply taught, teachers would often ask me if I was available for a particular date and it’s good to actually know. Lol! 👍Yea, stickers go a long way! Good idea picking just one student to be “top dog” and having just one pick from the bin. I have all students if they did well but that gets expensive so I only do it for some classes. I agree not to use food as an incentive. I just uploaded a supply teacher tips video on my channel too! This video ended up in my suggestions. Glad I found you. New subscriber here! 😄

Cella Raine thank you!!! I don’t like feeling unprepared with a group of 20+ kids waiting for my next instruction. I usually like to arrive early to read over everything and be ready when the children arrive. I love this job and all the variety it brings!

Thank you. I did subbing some years ago...and all wrong! So I'm a little nervous about getting back into it, and everything you talked about here was helpful because I did none of this before. I belive that I will be much more successful this go round. Thank you.

Omiseun you will do great! It’s all about being as prepared as you can be right? Since you’ve subbed before you know things can go wrong at any time. Having some things you can control makes the day go by with so much more ease!!

Great video! I’ve started subbing again a month ago after taking some time off. Do you ever turn down a day due to Dr appointments etc or do you take every job? I find it a fine line to walk bc I don’t want to stop getting called.

Thank you so much for reply :)
We are on island too :)
I don’t even know what I am supposed to do at first day of class , I did substitute teacher courses but I would say it wasn’t practical enough to even know “what to do or expect on First day “ but more the theory based more like laws , rules and regulation which I forgot lol, all I remember is teacher saying adjust the AC and take attendance so technically am clueless , I did found something called TPT website for activities and other resources, do you suggest purchasing any of items ? I have strong Indian accent and I have heard Hawaiian kids are very diverse to catch accents ,I think In a panic mode lol

Nix Nixon what District are you subbing in? I was in Mililani when I first started and now I’m in the Kailua side.
Ok, to ease yourself into the day and be as prepared as you can be I would recommend getting to the school about an hour early (I know what?!) because it gives you time to find the office and figure out their check in process, find your class, and (MOST importantly!) read over the days lessons and figure out where everything you will need for the day is located. Take it block by block. Read over the entire day but focus the classes you have first. Then during the break get ready for your next classes.
For lunch I would bring something that doesn’t need warming (time waster) and have small snacks (to eat during breaks) like oranges or bananas.
Like I said before as soon as the class comes in introduce yourself assertively lay out what you expect from them and then proceed with attendance (hawaiian names are super long and hard to pronounce so tell the kids you know you don’t pronounce them right and to correct you). DONT let them get away with stuff or they’ll run over you. Just set limits and you’ll be fine.

      Central district:)
I have no experience with kids whatsoever not even baby sitting for that matter .
Thank you so much it’s a lot of important information which I can’t think I would have got from any book or any other resource .
Any tips how to call names for attendance on first day since I am still struggling with street names here so I could imagine the local names wouldn’t be so easy either plus I don’t want to offend anyone at the same time , the only way I can think is asking one student first day to call each students name out like asking help Would that would be something we allowed to do ?
How do you implement rules about using restroom or lunch breaks ?
and thank you so much again for considering making a middle school video soon , I would be eagerly waiting for it :)
