This film is what made me fall in love with Talking Heads. A theater near me did a midnight showing of it when I was in college, so I took some...mushrooms and went to see it. It was awesome 😂
There's a lot of great live music. I can't even count anymore how many concerts I have been to, from about 50 ppl for local starting bands up to 70.000 during festivals. And then there are live registrations. Often a nice reminder of things you've seen yourself or the opportunity to skim the surface of what you've missed out on. There are only a very limited number of concert registrations around that have had the impact on me that Stop Making Sense has had. I own it on DVD and watch it at least once a year. And when the movie came back into cinemas earlier this year, I couldn't resist seeing it three times in two weeks. The only concert registration that can match the quality and impact of Stop Making Sense, to me, is Peter Gabriel's Secret World Live.
Stop Making Sense is such a sensational concert. American Utopia is also a must watch. It utilises modern technology to completely reinvent what you can do with a stage.
Hi Justin. Dave from Over There. May be my favourite Talking Heads song, and i remember seeing them perform it live at London's Hammersmith Odeon in the early 80s. David Byrne is just mesmerising to watch - saw him on a solo tour as well.
You're always coming with the good stuff. To this day, no one has reacted to more Be Bop Deluxe than you have and I thank you for that. Roxy Music too!😊
First off, thanks for making the actual video we're talking about the main focus 🙂 So few UA-cam channels do this. I first saw the Stop Making Sense video years ago. it's a truly ground breaking work, the way they build the stage show from scratch, with David Byrne coming on stage with a boogie box and an acoustic guitar, then the rest of the band being added as it goes on is amazing, Thanks for the great review.
I absolutely love this concert video! I prefer a couple of the tracks compared to the studio versions, especially "Burning down the house". Having the inclusion of The Tom Tom Club is the cherry on top!
I wonder if nerdy, clean cut David Byrne ever imagined himself in the Anthony Perkins role as the killer in the Hitchcock movie Psycho - and then wrote the T.Heads song "Psycho Killer".
"Stop Making Sense". As the film critic for the Desert News of Salt Lake City said in his review of the film when it was released: "This is a concert film made the way concert films should be made."
It doesn't matter how many times I try, I just can't get into these guys' music. And I do try! Every few years I'll give a random stab at listening to see if anything clicks this time. Still drawing a blank.
I agree with almost everything you said, he's so charismatic and individual. The one minor point I have is, I thought the lead vocals should have been higher in the mix. That's just my personal opinion, though
For every song in this film, this is the definitive version of the song. I have trouble hearing some of the studio versions of these songs, because the SMS versions are so much better.
If you repeat certain things long enough, it will get stuck not before long. That's what this band perfecioned and sometimes some of your guests will become patreons. If I gave everyone I like on u-tube 2 bucks a month I would be poor not before long. Well, I just have to make do with what you freely offer and listen to and analyze the things that I like myself. It's not always easy I admit. Cheers!
This is another one the DJs liked a bit too much, but it's still a great, original song (performed with some extra originality dabei, too). I hear a lot of African sound in a lot of the songs of those times - something like you can hear in the accompaniment of, say, a Steve Kekana song. For instance, Abuti Thabiso (which is in Sotho, so I don't understand a word, but I see from the comments that Thabiso - which would sound a bit like "Tahbeesaw" in English - is a personal name). ua-cam.com/video/8Nym4fA1UYQ/v-deo.html (I can also see where the people who say this is just "amphetamine injected Boeremusiek" are coming from, but I don't care. I like it. Steve has a lovely voice, for instance.)
Watched this a lot back then, too much but, I did enjoy this, this time, this time… this time. Bernie did good here but I’ve always felt underwhelmed by the keyboards on other songs. Just me probably.
If I appreciate the tracks from the album Remain in Light in their studio version, on the other hand I must say that I have never been convinced by their live counterparts, which was never the case for the three previous Talking Heads studio albums which were perfect both in the studio and on stage. I find that transposed live, the tracks from Remain in Light lose their impact and the rendering is quite pale compared to the studio originals in my humble opinion. It must be said that most of the tracks from Remain In Light included a lot of tinkering and other collages in the studio (with sometimes a tangle of bass, guitar and percussion parts) that would have been very difficult to reproduce on stage even surrounded by additional musicians. It's far from bad but for me Remain in Light is a studio lab work that is impossible to transcribe on stage.
Wow, what a return to excellence after tedious white men with more money than sense playing a pointless track for 3 hours. Prog fans are the WORST musical snobs.
Enjoy your Saturday 😊

Lol! I bet that was an experience :D
He is such a great front man. Love him and Peter Gabriel. This song is classic!
Stop Making Sense is an orgasmic experience of music & motion throughout, You would have trouble finding a better concert anywhere. Superb.

Was introduced to the Talking Heads back in '79. Been a fan ever since.
Same as it ever was
This performance was incredible
Stop Making Sense is such a sensational concert.
American Utopia is also a must watch. It utilises modern technology to completely reinvent what you can do with a stage.
As Graham Chapman says... What an eccentric performance :)
Classic track, doesn't get old.

DB is literally a genius. One of the top IQs ever tested in America. FR fr.

Ty zap, I try🙂

Crosseyed and Painless is the finale, and what a finale!
Stop Making Sense is one of my desert island albums.

Best Live album ever love you
Glad you are enjoying the whole film. It truly is a classic.

Probably the only music movie I know with a camera work that doesn't annoy me.
Byrne's acting of this song is so impactful. I really like the percussion, too.
I agree with almost everything you said, he's so charismatic and individual. The one minor point I have is, I thought the lead vocals should have been higher in the mix. That's just my personal opinion, though
Yep. Absolutely effing awesome!!Saw them in 1980 with Adrian Belew, Bernie Worrell and someone else added to the band, sorry.
😊👌🏼🎶❤️🍁❤️✨️🕊

If it starts with Bernie Worrell, you know it’s going to be great.
Oooooo... lookylookyluckylucky me! I was at one of the Pantages Theatre shows!
The studio album video of this song is so much better

Check out the entire concert movie, Justin. You’ll love it!
Yep, such an energetic performance.
5:35 is my fav. shot in a concert movie ever. Have you seen American Utopia?
Dull.

Wow, what a crash down to mundane averageness after Camel! Urgh. No ta. 🙃

Never liked their wacky songs. Cant take this seriously.
I guess that just means I have something for everyone ;)
@@JustJP @JustJP I think you are correct, sir. 🙃
@@pentagrammaton6793 you don’t like Stop Making Sense??? Say it isn’t so!
