My dumb, unqualified opinion is that:
Alexander's story could easily be transformed in a multi season series. Being as great of a narrative as GoT could've been.
Specially in the "end"of it all ,when his empire is divided between his generals.A whole cascade of events that shaped history forever.
Yeah but the end is so dramatic and demeaning it'd make everyone feel bad lol
@@Husky92223 A bitter sweet ending, another thing that GoT could've done.
My point is to showcase how Alexander conquered and changed the world. Yet,it was victim to his own greatness, because no one could fully take his place.
I think the diadochimachy would be more interesting, starting with the death of Alexander in Babylon and then seeing the civil wars and all the wounds opening.
So it’s ok that the cast are British with Brit accents when he was Greek 🤔
this is going to be more better then that DISASTER that was the 2004's Oliver stone film!
Remember the fact that one of the biggest factors that made Alexander into a legend he was his father, Phillip II. He created the Phalanx, greatly increased the size of the army, through cunning alliances and political maneuvers subdued all of the Hellenic world, and it was during Phillip's wars in Greece that Alexander gained considerable military experience, alongside a well-trained, experienced army and some of the commanders of the age. Every single one of these was an important factor that helped Alexander later when he started the Persian campaign.
i wouldn't say he created it but definitely improved upon it to a point that no other nations could combat it as successfully also having a one of the two professional armies in the region helped a lit
Remember that the bigger and only factor that made this idiot a legend is patriarchy and misogyny, nothing else
The phalanx was created by the Spartans and Alexander was not gay in ancient Greece the friendship between men was sacred and unbreakable because they had to fight battles together and watch each other's back which meant life or death and now there trying to turn it into something ugly shame on them
@@diamadisaronis2346 I meant the Macedonian phalanx, not the Greek one.
@@_Lax_ Macedonians are Greek hahahaha
Alexander's competence didn't just come out of nowhere, it's important to show a bit of background, like being taught by Aristotle, and leading armies as a teenager with his father during the campaign in Greece.
if you want to read a really good fiction, read Lion Of Macedonia, David Gemmell. it mainly focus on his General Parmenion.
Good point.
Alexander's father Philip the 2nd, was the first general to pay, feed, train and educate his soldiers in ways no one was doing back then. He left Alexander the biggest army in Greece. Philip always deserved more credit because without him building the foundation for their city in Macedonia and having all the provisions and knowledge he passed on, I don't think Alexander would've been able to accomplish what he did without all those resources.
@@BillyHadeshe deserves credit but “more” credit? Lol
@@Ccthomas-ks1hn Not more credit than Alexander. More credit than he is getting.
It really bugs me when the battles are two armies lined up and they just charge and smash into each other. With all of the flaws in Oliver Stone's film "Alexander", he at least got the battle tactics right and is probably the best adaptation of ancient warfare to ever be put on screen. He also used real freaking elephants to charge the phalanx lines!
The smashing together thing is just weird. Don't know what it'll take for Hollywood to shake that.
I enjoyed the unifroms in Stones' Alexander a lot! Only thing I didn't is that the persians were depicted as the a rabble in style desert robes running into the phalanx's like runner zombies. Persia's army at the time was as disciplined, if not more, than the Macedonians
@@bloodsalt It's strange how Oliver Stone picks and chooses what he wants to be accurate. Lol
Indeed. And, where is the Macedonian PHALANX??? Just crazy that it's not depicted.
The Oliver Stone's movie was may fav as a teen. I hope this documentary make people more instered on Alexander Magno story.
When I was young I used to wonder how people were so brave to be in such melees, being surrounded by enemies and not knowing which is friend or foe but just fighting for your life hoping not to be backstabbed. Then I grew up and learned more and it seems people of the past had the same concerns and just didn't do this crap and media has just been lying to me.
Hollywood seems to have a deathly fear of humanizing people. Showing two armies poking with spears trying to whittle each other down from the safety of their line will not make it less glamorous, only better as it will really emphasize the danger they're in and humanize the people fighting.

Nah Netflix going said Aristotle is actually a cross dressing woman
There is little evidence though that Arostitle was actually tutoring Alexander, or, if he did, what impact he actually had on him. But I get it why people embrace this story so much - the greatest king taught by the greatest philosopher, it fits the legend.
For someone who was at possibly as good as Alexander militarily, or perhaps even better, read a good biography of his father, Phillip of Macedon. Turned Macedon from a rural backwater into the controller of all Ancient Greece, defeated Sparta and Thebes, and handed over to Alex a legendary military with longer spears in the phalanx than the Greeks used.
Agree, Philip has the misfortune to be followed by and being the father of Alexander. His legacy is overlooked. No Philip, no Alexander the Great.

Consider me interested, but I hope someday there will be an Alexander counterpart to HBO's Rome. That was a fascinating ride into history. Not too much Hollywood, but gritty and authentic. Historical accuracy is nigh impossible with these kind of shows: there's too much we don't know and since a show is limited in time, a riveting tale is sometimes more important than historical accuracy.
Amen to that! So sad that Since Rome nobody has done a historic TV show like it. Closes I have seen that was quite good was the localy made ARN. But might be bias thanks to being Swedish.
That would be great...sadly as good as some of this looks i hate these shows where scenes are interrupted by comments and opinions ..
Rome was more than just a docu series though.
It was something like a combo adaptation of Shakespeare's Julius Caesar and historical interpretation with a high focus on the realities of slavery and other issues, while still grounding it all in the perspective of the common men of Rome like Lucius Vorenus and Titus Pullo.
Spartacus was the closest I've seen another series come to the format of HBO's Rome.
If they do make one, hopefully they dont run out of budget like Rome and cut the series short
Well they did know Persians didn’t have curved swords, turbans and wore pants. You’d think they’d at least get the minor things right like that. Also Darius didn’t wear leather armor (taken straight out of Vikings) and the Greeks didn’t wear dark shady armor. You still need to be accurate….
The main difference between Alexander and all other great Generals in history is that Alexander had Aristotle as his teacher...
70% of this show is a lie. If you're going to tell the story, tell the whole truth; don't take one side of it. But I'm not surprised these people have been lying for centuries

If someone has the opportunity to come to Greece he has to add to his to-do list visiting the Archaeological Museum of Pella and Vergina, the whole experience will reward him for sure.
The Greek Phalanx held spears 6 meters long called the "Sarrisa". When they were in formation they formed a porcupine-like line of infantry that was inaccessible to the enemy without getting slaughtered by the Sarissas. I didn't see this in the movie, I hope I am wrong.

I'm sure they tried - but producers probably shut it down because the story has to be compelling. It sucks that you can't just stick to the reality. History has ruined fiction for me. What really happened is as dramatic as the stuff they make up. It's a bummer they don't do more to capture realism. Wtf less than 10 minutes have passed and they claim that Alexander was gay
They do not. They even highlight he wouldn't use this word. There are records of Alexander being with men:
1) It is said Alexander kissed Bagoas, after Bagoas captivated him with dance. Bagoas was a MAN. "We are told, too, that he was once viewing some contests in singing and dancing, being well heated with wine, and that his favourite, Bagoas, won the prize for song and dance, and then, all in his festal array, passed through the theatre and took his seat by Alexander's side; at sight of which the Macedonians clapped their hands and loudly bade the king kiss the victor, until at last he threw his arms about him and kissed him tenderly", Plutarch, Life of Alexander. (Now, of course that doesn't proove he shared bed with Bagoas, but it shows he was willing to kiss other man.)
2) And here from Quintus Curtius Rufus, THE HISTORIES OF ALEXANDER THE GREAT:
„Euxenippos was still very young and a favourite of the king because of his youthful beauty, but although in handsome appearance he was equal to Hephaestion, he was not his match in a charm which was indeed not manly”. This implies Euxenippus - MAN - was attractive to King because of his look and implies King was attracted to him, and possibly to Hephaistion too.
"There Nabarzanes, having received a safe conduct, met him [Alexander], bringing great gifts. Among these was Bagoas, a eunuch of remarkable beauty, and in the very flower of boyhood, who had been loved [assuerat: literally accustomed or initmate] by Darius and was afterwards to be loved [accustomed/intimate] by Alexander; and it was especially because of the boy's entreaties that he was led to pardon Nabarzanes".
„For when Orsines had honoured all the friends of the king with gifts beyond their highest hopes, to Bagoas, a eunuch who had won the regard of Alexander through YIELDING HIS BODY, he paid no honour, and on being admonished by some that Bagoas was dear to Alexander, replied that he was honouring the friends of the king, not his harlots, and that it was not the custom of the Persians to mate with males who made females of themselves by prostitution. ” - Rufus clearly says Bagoas was lover of Alexander. Yes, we don't know how much true is in this, but it shows Alexander was viewed as attracted to man already in antiquity.
3) Moreover, Alexander and Hephaistion were comparing themselves to Achilles and Patroclus - who were depicted in by some classical Greeks and Romans as actual lovers.
That combined strongly suggests ancient authors believed Alexander was attracted to men - and attracted to Hephaistion. That doesn't preclude Alexander from having relationships with women. He most likely was bi.

There is no historical basis for insinuating Persia was behind the assassination of Philip II. In fact, there's a better chance that Alexander, or his mother Olympias, orchestrated it or knew it would occur.
We'll never know. People need to realise Alexander's story was long before Jesus or the Roman Empire, and even these parts of history are up for debate and speculation
They did have plenty of incentive to assassinate Philip though. Macedonia looked strong enough to be a problem and they were lead by one of the greatest leaders in all of history, so why not spend a recourse they have in abundance, money, to get rid of the guy. I have an Indian friend whose name is a corruption of Menander, his name being Milind. The last free Greek Kingdom was based around Gandhara, which is the region between Peshawar and Kandahar today. The Indo Greeks, called the Yavana in Sanskrit took up Buddhism, and were the first ones to create artwork showing the Buddha himself. Their king had a treatise on Buddhism, called the Milinda Pariha (enquiries by Menander) about Buddhist philosophy, and its a very popular name in India even today.
One of the greatest gifts given by the Yavana is the Gandhara school of art. Please do look it up, its quite exquisite. There are many depictions of the Buddha where he looks like he's wearing a tunic made of flowing water, and a few examples where he has new friends, like say, Herakles. The Indo-Greeks kinda married into the Indian population and gradually became indistinguishable, but their gift to humanity remains. Oddly enough, the national dress of Afghanistan is the Pathani, which is basically a tunic with pyjamas. Sadly, Afghanistan tends to destroy all ancient art, including the Greek- built Bamiyan Buddhas, and the only discernable Greek habit they kept alive is Baccha bazil which is child abuse.

I don't really mind the historical inaccuracies, I see it more as entertainment and I enjoyed it a lot. What bothered me more than the dramatized bit though was the so-called experts just blatantly saying wrong things, like how Darius was just a commoner and had no royal connection when he was in fact related to the royal family. And they kept banging on about how his wife Stateira was of royal and noble lineage and yet online I can find practically nothing about her origins and who her parents were, so it would be interesting to know what sources they're using for that.

Alexander the Great is a fantastic study. He was not only a brilliant tactician but also commanded mastery over siege warfare and logistics.
And he deserves another proper documentary. This is not it, this in the fantasy genre. The number of historical inaccuracies in this trailer alone is physically painful
@riheg.. Yes indeed and he has in this production. A multitude of Historians, Archeologists and history professors along with ancient historical sources were consulted during production to maintain historical accuracy and integrity. Also, I refer you to the Encyclopaedia Britannica and the museums of the world. For you are no history expert.
He travelled all the way to modern day Iraq and Afghanistan. I mean. He had a mission. He wanted to leave his empire for all to remember. What a legacy
Of course he was a good tactician, but was not better than Genghis Khan and Khalid Ibn Al Walid in the battle field, Alexander fought unnecessary battles which led to this death when he was critically wounded in the battle field against a indiginuos tribe.
Khalid Ibn Al Walid never lost a battle, he defeated the Roman Empire and Persian Empire in the same time, the conqueror of Damascus and Persia.
Genghis Khan was a badass tactician, he never lost a battle, he won the battles against the Abassid Caliphate, he conquered Anatolia and a part of territory in the balkans.

@@Tylerrrrrb Educate yourself bro, before it's too late....!!!
@pettylisa5599As for your first comment, you are partly right and I will explain. Heracles and Hercules are two different names for the same personality. Hercules, which is the most common, is based on the Latin version of the original Greek name. And indeed, in all probability, he was only a mythical person and not historical, which is not true after the archaeological discoveries of Tiryns, Mycenae, Pylos, Vapheus, the palatial tomb in Pellana, Sparta of Menelaus and Helen, but also in all the other Mycenaean tombs where the bodies of soldiers were discovered with equipment that belonged to the Achaeans, warriors who fought in Troy...!!! In fact, Alexander the Great himself worshiped the tomb of Achilles and this in itself proves his historicity. Such was his valor and strength that he touched the limits of the mythical and to this day no historian or archaeologist can say with certainty that Achilles was a mythical and not a historical figure. Achilles, the king of the Myrmidons, existed and this is another reason to make Greek history unique on the planet.

Some say cleopatra was middle eastern. Actually she had a hellenic background. And yes Alexander was blond not brown colored. There are facts and fictions. Don't be confused.

Alexander is celebrated as the ultimate legend and unmatched warrior without a doubt, but they indeed faced formidable challenges upon reaching the Indian subcontinent. Here, the nature of true warfare underwent a profound transformation. Alexander's strategic withdrawal from this land wasn't a display of weakness, but a recognition of the distinctive and formidable character of Indian warfare, underscoring his respect for its unique complexities.
When Alexander confronted one of the smallest kingdoms in the Indian subcontinent (nowadays Punjab region ), ruled by King Puru, he was astounded by the warfare skills displayed by Puru and his forces. Despite ultimately losing to Alexander, Puru inflicted substantial losses on the invading army, leaving them depleted and exhausted. Remarkably, Puru refused to surrender and instead offered his life, recognizing the ongoing strength of the broader Indian empire. This encounter marked just the beginning, as beyond Puru's kingdom, the Nanda dynasty and its ruler loomed-a formidable force in Indian warfare history. It would take the Mauryas a century of struggle to wrest control from the Nandas and establish the mighty Mauryan empire.
You would say that as an Indian but more likely he was just running out of men and morale and spread too thin half way across the world.

India I believe was the wealthiest region in the world at the time and would no doubt be a challenge to conquer. Still, I think Alexander would have rolled ‘em if he hadn’t already bored and exhausted his Macedonian troops by taking them on a decade of conquest, exploration and colonization. The guy had his men build a land bridge to Tyre almost a mile long all the while being raided and shot at. He had the resources of the greatest empire in the world and the superior technology of the greeks coupled with military genius and otherworldly determination. If he had lived another three decades like a typical greek noble, his second and third acts may have rendered our modern world unrecognizable.
