  • There are so many choices for having a drink in Bangkok. We headed to Sukhumvit Soi 8 in the Nana area. The Brew House, Det 5 and The Game were part of this Friday evening.
    Here's a few links for my favorite credit cards. I try to check the links often, but let me know if there is a problem. If they change the offer on the card, I may need to update the link. Full disclosure, I get a few airline miles for referring a new customer. You should get the same public offer at no additional cost. Thank you very much.

    Been going to Det 5 since the 90s when it was on Soi Zero under the highway. If you didn't read the history of the restaurant in the front of the menu, it's a great rundown.

      Thanks, I didn't notice the menu. I'll make sure to read it. I've heard tales of Soi Zero. My buddy was Navy like myself but worked close with the Air Force. He thought Det 5 was a take on Detachment 5 that went to Vietnam. Another buddy thought the owner was prior Air Force. Does the menu explain all that? Thanks for watching Terry

    Awesome episode! The tour down Soi 8 brought back wonderful memories as I stayed at the Stable Lodge for extended stays way back in 2002 & 2003. Now, my family and I usually stay riverside at the Sheraton and Montien. Anyway, Soi 8 has really developed nicely and looks to be a destination Soi with the awesome restaurants and bars! Special note: Shout out to the former Soi 8 Beer Garden which was on the opposite side of the street from the Stable Lodge and a half block towards Sukhumvit. It’s now a tall apartment/condo complex. The beer garden was excellent in the early 2000’s with delicious food, friendly and attentive staff, cold towel served routinely (which was common two decades ago), pool tables, and awesome fish aquariums. I was saddened when it closed (2005/2006) but I suspect that the owner was paid handsomely for the land.

    • @EagerExpat
      @EagerExpat  29 днів тому +1

      I remember the beer garden there years ago. Just like the ones on Soi 24, that land is just too expensive. The nice cold towels is a tradition I'd like to see return. The ones in the beer section of 7/11 aren't the same. One of my buddies was the head chef at the Sheraton on the river. He just moved to a hotel, I think in the Maldives.
      Thank you for watching. More to come.

      Nice video! I also used to stay at the Stable around 2000-2004. I also remember the Corleone bar which I think was run by Bandidos. I also believe that the Kiwi bar came after Corleones, same building, but not sure. Crown hotel in the alley behind Lolitas was also cheap and popular. In Crown there was mirrors in the ceiling with red and green lights flashing

      Hey Joe thanks for watching. Soi 8 is great. We were having the name discussion at the pub. My buddy John and a former Air Force guy that has been going to the place for 20 plus years. He said the owner (or former, I forget) was in the Air Force. Stationed at Detachment 5. I did a fast Google search that said Detachment 5,
      Det 5 was sent to Vietnam on May 15, 1967. These guys were saying in the US Air Force it was common to say Det 1 or Det 5. But, I have no idea, I was in the Navy. I know they just celebrated 40 plus years, so the timing adds up. Great place. Either way, I'll be back.

    How does the Rabbit Card work? Does it expire? Is there a discount for over 55? 60?

    • @EagerExpat
      @EagerExpat  28 днів тому

      You add money to the card and buzz in an out of the train. How far determines how much. Max of 43b? Something like that. I'm not sure if it expires. I think I kept a card over a year once years ago and it kept it's small amount. But, that's a question for Google. Discounts for seniors is suppose to be Thai people only. I've heard of people getting the senior card, but a comment today said he was denied. They did give him a regular Rabbit card.

      @EagerExpat  29 днів тому

      Hey Jim, there are a thousand choices. Check out Agoda for SE Asia deals. Off the top of my head on Sukhumvit Soi 11, there is the Ramada, Holiday Inn Express and Travelodge. If you are into miles and points, get the IHG card. I have a link in the video description. They keep changing the offers, but I think they have a no annual fee card, no foreign fee, where you spend $2000 in 3 months and get 80,000 points. Plus 3x on dining and months bills and gas. 2x everywhere else. Rack up 100,000 points pretty fast.
      That's probably 7 or 8 free nights, maybe more at the Holiday Inn Express on Soi 11. There's also a Holiday Inn Express in Pattaya. If you run out of points, it's usually around $70. Do a little research on which card is best for you. I think the one I have comes with Platinum status. I pay (old price $49 a year) I think it's $99 now. But I get a free night at the Intercontinental in Hong Kong or Tokyo. Then I use points for a few more nights. I love the IHG program. Say hi in the comment when you get to town. We'll grab a drink.
