Hello Dennis. I have two firefly's. Smokeyburst fflp. And a double cut dual P90's from about 4 or 5 years ago. When they first came out they had one bridge tail piece in all like a Gibson Jr. I got a white second batch that had a tunomatic bridge and a stopbar tail piece. I absolutely love them both they are great instruments. I've played the hell out of the DC for about 5 years it looks just like it did the day I got it. But I wanted to ask do the 338 have Dime size or big pots. I can't find that info anywhere. Is it nice what's your opinion. I really want a semi hollow. Thanks
@@chucklee347 Hi Chuck…most of the Firefly models use full size pots with the exception of the 338 due to access through the F holes being limited. They use “dime size” pots on the semi-hollows. They did recently come out with a 338 “Lucille” model with Varitone and a back access plate. Not sure if they put full size pots in that one or not. You CAN with some patience/determination replace them with full size pots, but not really any need unless you just want to upgrade them, or if they die for whatever reason. I have a number of 338’s and have had no issues with the pots. A few from 2019 a still going strong with no issues.

I agree that front-mounted jacks tend to be more fragile than side-mounted jacks, but front-mount is the way Gibson did it originally. You can minimize the chances of damage by using a cable with a 90-degree plug to minimize stress on the jack, and by pressing against the body as you pull out the cord, to minimize stress on the underlying wood. (Or underlying pickguard in the case of guitars with front-facing jacks like the Fender Jazzmaster.)
NGD is always fun. To be honest, I am not a fan of a spalted top. I would like the front to look like the back. Great rendition of that Beatles tune! As always a great review of the guitar. Happy Holidays.

I have a old (60’s) Framus I have used on a few records, and a Thomann Harley Benton 3/4 I bought a couple years ago. The HB is acoustic/electric and sounds quite good for $100!! Could you ask your FF guy what the center block is made of the current mouse ears 338s? Wrote Aron at GG 3 times asking, no reply My Lucille copy from the current batch is a pretty dull, resonance and harmonics wise. Bridge pickup route painted black but showed either splits or tear out along grain lines, peeping the block from the controls cover opening (no f-holes) there's either bark or branch bark along edges at the bottom end of the block. From the color and grain I'm guessing basswood. I'm also curious what the 2 thick layers are between the 3 maple veneer layers in the body ply. Wonder how consistent they all are across all finishes. My ultra prism from batch before last is super resonant, very lively and bright, center block color and grain look like it's maple, but who knows. Wish we did!

I bought a flamed top version off of Amazon for a decent price. But here's the thing, have you ever looked inside the cavity? I had to remove the neck pickup because it could not be adjusted up towards the strings. Anyways long story short the inside of the cavity is a complete mess at least on the neck pickup. Big gap, may a half to three quarters of an inch, between the end of the neck tennon and the tone block, and also going down the control side of the neck tenon as it is mounted into the guitara very large gap for whatever reason and a lot of excess glue laying in there. Also on the tuneamatic bridge that the strings go over it tilts back towards the stop bar tailpiece. Looks ain't everything. just sayin. So needless to say this is going back. I have another FF that is the twin P90's double cut and it plays so well and sounds so good I haven't needed to do anything other put 10's on it. But I haven't looked into the cavity on it so can't say how it looks inside? Anyways have a good one. stay safe

They had stopped selling on Amazon for quite awhile. This particular model is still only on their web site, and this along with the “Racing Stripe” models, along with their newer “Pro” model are only on the guitarsgarden web site. Interesting… anyway, don’t understand how the bridge would be tilting back if the bridge studs are correct. Does it tilt back with no string tension? Sounds to me that the studs are misaligned or loose. Anyway, I think you made the right decision to send it back. Sorry to hear of the issues!

Hi Walter…thanks for stopping in! I would check 1st the low E saddle. Could be loose and what is causing the rattle. Just hold the saddle down and pluck the low E and see if the rattle stops. If you really need to replace it, I have used Musiclilly on Amazon for both regular ToM bridges and also their roller bridges. I recently got one of these. I have to bring it to a repair shop. The paint on the fret board rubbed on my fingers. I get buzzing when i play strings now. and the first two frets don't make sound like there not catching right. I don't know how to fix it so i have to bring it to a shop. It might cost me another $200
Hi JustJoeKing420…thanks for watching and commenting. First, if you just received it, allow it to acclimate to its new surroundings before you start making any adjustments to it. Every new guitar (unless you bought it from a shop and THEY already set it up) will probably require a decent setup and cleaning. They have been in shipping containers for months…going through multiple different temp and humidity changes…sitting in warehouses, etc….once acclimated then see what you need to do. A string change, and fretboard cleaning will take care of the “black finger” you are experiencing. A quick bridge adjustment or possibly truss rod adjustment should take care of any buzz. It’s actually not that hard to do minor adjustments to bring the guitar into good playability. I have a few setup videos here on the channel, and there are many others on UA-cam that will help you to do your own setup. No way should you pay anything close to $200 for a setup….most adjustments can be done with the tools included with the guitar and common household tools if needed. Hope that helps you enjoy your new 338!! 🎸👍

Firebird is NOT located here in the US and their US warehouse system is such that it can only process stateside shipping currently. I see a bit more duplication of models creeping into your collection here! I suppose between this and your spalted maple IYV ITF-300, you could start a spalted maple section in your guitar orchestra. I’m generally not a fan of the spalted maple look either-some are just downright UGLY, although some spalted maple tops do seem to look a lot better than others, and as you pointed out, this one seems pretty mild, almost to the point of being totally plain like John Lennon’s Epiphone Casino. I also get the sense that Firefly has slowly been improving their models over time, with things like the improved headstock shape and the seemingly improved acoustic resonance you demonstrated.
Ha! As you know, these two guitars are the only “spalties” I own…as I have stated before, not my favorite finish as you simply don’t know what it’s going to look like once you order one. I got very lucky (in my opinion anyway) in that they both are a bit “subtle” and look great! Yes, Firebird has been trying it’s best to get better in the QC department, bringing on different manufacturing plants in what can only be described as a “mess” that’s been going on over there. They have another factory on line now to bring out some of their models (338 included) and the last few guitars I have purchased or received from them have been very nice including this new 338 along with the Jazzmaster and the MadCat I just bought!

So yeah, I just looked on Amazon and they do have a number of them there now. They must be trying to sell them out and decided to put their excess stock 338’s back on Amazon. They had stopped selling on Amazon for quite awhile. This particular model is still only on their web site, and this along with the “Racing Stripe” models, along with their newer “Pro” model are only on the guitarsgarden web site. Interesting… anyway, don’t understand how the bridge would be tilting back if the bridge studs are correct. Does it tilt back with no string tension? Sounds to me that the studs are misaligned or loose. Anyway, I think you made the right decision to send it back. Sorry to hear of the issues!

Hi Walter…thanks for stopping in! I would check 1st the low E saddle. Could be loose and what is causing the rattle. Just hold the saddle down and pluck the low E and see if the rattle stops. If you really need to replace it, I have used Musiclilly on Amazon for both regular ToM bridges and also their roller bridges. This was is a direct drop in for the 338

I recently got one of these. I have to bring it to a repair shop. The paint on the fret board rubbed on my fingers. I get buzzing when i play strings now. and the first two frets don't make sound like there not catching right. I don't know how to fix it so i have to bring it to a shop. It might cost me another $200
Hi JustJoeKing420…thanks for watching and commenting. First, if you just received it, allow it to acclimate to its new surroundings before you start making any adjustments to it. Every new guitar (unless you bought it from a shop and THEY already set it up) will probably require a decent setup and cleaning. They have been in shipping containers for months…going through multiple different temp and humidity changes…sitting in warehouses, etc….once acclimated then see what you need to do. A string change, and fretboard cleaning will take care of the “black finger” you are experiencing. A quick bridge adjustment or possibly truss rod adjustment should take care of any buzz. It’s actually not that hard to do minor adjustments to bring the guitar into good playability. I have a few setup videos here on the channel, and there are many others on UA-cam that will help you to do your own setup. No way should you pay anything close to $200 for a setup….most adjustments can be done with the tools included with the guitar and common household tools if needed. Hope that helps you enjoy your new 338!! 🎸👍

Firebird is NOT located here in the US and their US warehouse system is such that it can only process stateside shipping currently. I will mention it to them again to see if there is any future plan for expanding it, but right now it’s just not possible from what I understand. 🙁

I see a bit more duplication of models creeping into your collection here! I suppose between this and your spalted maple IYV ITF-300, you could start a spalted maple section in your guitar orchestra. I’m generally not a fan of the spalted maple look either-some are just downright UGLY, although some spalted maple tops do seem to look a lot better than others, and as you pointed out, this one seems pretty mild, almost to the point of being totally plain like John Lennon’s Epiphone Casino. I also get the sense that Firefly has slowly been improving their models over time, with things like the improved headstock shape and the seemingly improved acoustic resonance you demonstrated.
Ha! As you know, these two guitars are the only “spalties” I own…as I have stated before, not my favorite finish as you simply don’t know what it’s going to look like once you order one. I got very lucky (in my opinion anyway) in that they both are a bit “subtle” and look great! Yes, Firebird has been trying it’s best to get better in the QC department, bringing on different manufacturing plants in what can only be described as a “mess” that’s been going on over there. They have another factory on line now to bring out some of their models (338 included) and the last few guitars I have purchased or received from them have been very nice including this new 338 along with the Jazzmaster and the MadCat I just bought!
