Welp its kinda funny to me cause i play a double bass.......she said a bass player right not just a bass guitar...
I mean seven nation army is the first song I learned on bass lol
(And here's me as a bass player giving some constructive criticism) You need a bass amp. You can't use a normal amp since the amp can't go that low and it might explode :P One similarity between bass and acoustic guitar is actually palm muting, as they both rely on your hand muting the strings on the bridge. You can also use a pick with your bass if you need to.
Caleb Malphas She’s gonna broke that guitar amp
Correct. I’m suprised by now it’s not such a talked about thing that the amps are different
Along with using a pick, use a felt pick instead of a regular one. You wouldn’t want to damage the strings. It’s the same as if you were using a pick for the ukulele. It should be a felt pick in order to cause less to no damage on the strings.
Caleb Malphas The first song I learned was AMERICAN IDIOT by GREENDAY
its very unlikely that the amp will explode.... i used to b broke and play bass on a really small guitar amp like all the time and nothing really happened to it
Did you connect your bass into a guitar amp?🥴 be careful 🌚
wait, they use different amps!?
I've had loads of conversations with accomplished guitarists that really struggle when trying bass for the first time. As most bassists (that I know anyway) started on guitar, most of us can play both (sort of), but the Bass is a totally different animal. Bigger frets, bigger neck, longer neck. Muscle memory for spacing is just out the window. I'd say its probably as difficult as it would be trying to play left handed, it THAT much of a new learning curve. We all know the basics but getting your fingers and hands to re-learn everything is really hard. Our guitarist in our band is amazing, like he can shred and solo like a demon, but looked like a baby deer learning to walk on ice when he had my Bass in his hands..... it was embarrassing!! But I would look the same trying to learn the cello or violin, the only similarity is they are stringed instruments. This is why, I think, as I said, most bassists at some time played the guitar, but once you make the switch, you very very rarely see bassists become guitarists again. What I'm saying in essence is you are totally not alone, but like with everything else, practice, practice, practice. Stay safe all......

Here are some tips from me, a bassist
You play using your index and middle finger on the right hand
It is kinda hard to get used to the *thicc* strings but after a few days of playing (that was for me atleast) you will get used to them.
My left hand hurt a lot too when i had just started playing, and my tip for that is to do some warmups before you start playing riffs and stuff.
Lastly, please, dont plug a bass guitar in a guitar amp 🙃. If youre looking to start playing the bass more i defineatly recommend getting a bass amp because it will sound better and you will not ruin the guitar amp 🙂
These are some of my tips. I know you will not see this, but if you do then youre welcome for the tips!

I can’t wait for your “After 1 missed year of practice: bass edition” video to come out! 🙂👍
Bass is so much fun. I hope you have the best time learning. You might want to work on your left hand fingers. It's different than guitar in that flat fingers are preferred (to mute the other strings) over the arched fingers you use to precisely fret on a guitar. It actually feels more comfortable and muting is something you can take back to your guitar and uke playing with satisfying results.
Ok so just as a disclaimer: I have never had an official bass lesson, but I have been playing for a while, and I hope my advice can at least help a little.
So for your right hand, there are a few problems. Firstly, and I can't stress this enough, you need to keep your whole arm relaxed; from your shoulder all the way to the tips of your fingers. If you feel like your shoulder or elbow are uncomfy, you might need to adjust the position of the bass (moving it up, down, left, right, or putting it on a bit of a diagonal could all help) bass is a big instrument, so a small bit of tension can affect your ability, as well as your long term health. This includes that you should try to keep your wrist relatively straight, though a slight bend is good for your comfort and relaxation. Secondly, you need to keep your fingers relatively straight, and play with the pads of your fingers, not your nails or the tips as you might do on a more delicate instrument like the uke. Also, it is important that you get into the habit of alternating pointer and middle fingers when you play. Playing with only one finger is a valid technique and style, but alternating should be the default.
Now, for your left hand, some similar advice, but slightly different. Again, it is very important to stay relaxed for the same reasons listed above, and the same changes in posture will help too. Your left wrist also needs to be fairly straight. Also, you need to push down the strings firmly with the full force of your hand. This means practice, and even, possibly, grip strength training. Very importantly, you need to be comfortable playing with all four of your fingers, as I saw that you were mostly only using your first and third. The use of your pinky finger will make all of those riffs easier, even though it is harder to use at first.
That is all I have for technique, as that is probably where you need to improve the most at this point. Anyone can feel free to ask questions, and I will do my best to answer them.
That’s actually a really nice and useful comment! Do you recommend some online *free* teachers on UA-cam or whatever, that could teach properly?
Thank you! I started learning alone and I have this problem with my left hand, i keep hearing the sound of the frets when i play short notes (i try to release pressure on my finger without completely leaving not to make a long note, if that makes sense) and it's VERY loud and I bet i must do something wrong but idk how to correct that. Do you have any advice ?
(Sorry for my broken english, it's not my main language haha)
@@nisr1 Either your strings are too close to the fret board and you have to lift them up a bit so they don't touch the other frets, or you have to press down the string harder to have a clean sound without other vibrations. You can search for "high and low action bass setup" on youtube to learn more.
@@nisr1 Haha although after reading your comment again, it's when you play short notes you said, and it makes a sound when you try to make the note short by lifting the pressure of the left hand. To play clean short notes takes practice, but you should do it by stopping the string's vibration with your right hand, not the left. Your right hand has to be the master.

The way he does tutorials makes it seem he's learning the bass with you. its amazing.
As a bass player, this one physically hurt .
Also, I know this comment is late but...
1. You're plucking the strings wrong . Place your thumb on the white pickup, and use your index and middle finger to pluck the strings . If you're plucking strings below the first and second, you are allowed to plaace your thumb down a string to reach them .
2. Second, find better finger placements to make riffs easier to play (if that even made sense) .
3. Keep a good hand position on the bass . The thumb on the back of the neck, and keep a nice, relaxed wrist
4. Keep your fingers close to the bass strings, so when you need to use a finger, you don't need to pull it from a thousand miles away to play the note .
5. USE YOUR PINKY . It might not be strong, but you must train it and learn to use it .
Edit: PLZ STOP HATING ON ME . IK it's her first attempt, and she was doing well . I can admit that . But I'm just trying to help her. If u disagree with my technique, please keep it to yourself . Everyone has a different way of playing bass, and this is the way I learned it . And as I said, I'm just trying to help her .
Izzy C All of those except 1 can and should be applied to any stringed instrument. She can get away with bad technique on ukuleles because they're smaller and have softer strings but for guitar and bass you'll need to get those points eventually.
I am a also a bassist and this physically and mentally hurt me
The bass is not primarily a jazz instrument, I myself am a jazz session bassist but I often play my 5 string tunes to b flat and I play a lot of rock and metal, but as it’s commonly seen as a jazzy instrument it has a much stronger presence in funk and jazz but also in metal and rock
Number 5 is so true, I struggled using my pinky when I started out so I never used it. When I started training my pinky, moving around the fretboard became much more easier.
She says it’s her first attempt, she’s trying, she knows she’s probably doing a lot of things wrong :c
I hope you know you were the one and only reason I got a ukulele! I’ve had it for a year and a half and people say I sound really good and I wright sing and post them in a channel called universal Jen thx so much for inspiring me!

It is generally acceptable for you to play this shape with your pointer and pinky fingers instead of having to stretch your ring finger so far. I hope this was helpful!

Anchor your thumb on the pickup.
Alternate between index and middle finger when plucking a string.
Mute other strings when not used.
Start slow.
Don't put too much tension when plucking.
Thats all I know hope this helped Idk I'm so late help.
Your uke looks a little bigger than usual
You about to trigger bass players including me with this post
no, she es small
Get out
First of all so glad u are picking up bass. But I am an actual bass player and am noticing some bad habits right away.
So the way u r plucking the strings in this video was like finger picking a guitar which is not the traditional way to play a bass. U want to put your pointer and middle finger straight and brush through the string alternating between you pointer and middle finger. If u don't quite understand because I'm not explaning very well just watch any bass player who doesn't use a pick.
Second most bassist use their pinkies a lot. You were stretching with your ring finger to reached fretts that are 2 frets a part most bassists would use there pinkies to do that.
Third u hold the neck with your thumb in a weird place just raise your hand from your side and rest your thumb in the middle of the neck that should help the wrist pain.
So glad your doing this and good luck.
thank you so much for the advice!!! this will really help!:)
You forget to mention that you should put your thumb on the pickup
I was about to comment, but this pretty much covers everything. I would just add that if your wrist hurts, try angling the neck up. It should relieve a lot of tension. It may look a little strange, but trust me, it's worth it. Be really careful, 'cause you really don't want to mess up your wrist permanently. That's what I almost did. It interferes with every other instrument you play if it gets too bad.
True i do bass too
Caleb Sorenson I just pluck it as if I’m using a pick but I don’t have a proper bass pick yet.
It's funny how every guitarist on a bass ignores they have a pinky, makes it so much easier
You are doing way better than anyone I've ever taught, guitar or bass. I think 'cause you already know strings.

funny how i found u when i needed to learn ukulele but now im here to learn bass (obvi ur only learning but its still funny)
I played bass off and on in the local music scene for 20 years, doing covers and originals. All I can say is this, on bass there is nowhere to hide. If a guitarist has a sour note in a chord or in a fast solo it's kind of hidden, but on bass it's there for the world to hear. My advice to band bass newbies? Stay solid, stay steady, work with your drummer. You two are the rhythm section, even more so in a 1-guitarist band. If you two are anchored down well, you're more than halfway home as a band. If the drums are the heart beat of a band, then the bass is the blood that provides the flow.

Hey so I'm pretty sure you probably aren't watching the comments on this video any more lol
I see you have a pretty big channel and to be honest I found this video randomly.
I have been playing bass for 6 years and I want to be clear I'm s#!t at it I can play a few muse songs and that's about the best I've done... that said bass is both very similar and very different from guitar.
They are structurally almost the same but they are played very differently, and yet you "can" play them the same.
I love to see someone new find some enjoyment playing the bass and would love to see you play some more it takes some time but honestly... and I'll probably get some shot for this, it is easier than most instruments to get the basics but the advanced s#!t is... stupid hard to pull off.
That said love the video and stoked to see someone else approach the bass seriously :)
