I HATE shower heads fixed on the wall. I watched one Auschwitz movie as a kid and I always associated those with murder… i hate not having control over the shower head so that’s why I dislike even showers in public sauna etc.
Yooooo....the ability to disconnect the shower head is priceless. 😅
You can buy toploaders, but they work like the frontloaders, they have a snap on and an integrated heating element. The inside drum rotate full circle, similar to front loaders. American toploaders work different, have no heating element ( Front loaders don t have heating too).
In Europe most of the cleaning come from rotation. Mechanical cleaning (like the historic washboard). In the US most of the cleaning come from the detergent. The circle is way shorter, so the detergent contain more bleach or other chemicals.
The front loader detergents in the US are labeled „high efficiency“ - relating to the washer. US top loaders don’t clean so well.
I understand; however, in Korea, we have a heating element to our front loading machines in which also drys the clothing is you choose so. We have a Samsung washing machine. It's an amazing front loading smart washing machine.
Open kitchens sound like a good idea until your sofa smells like onions, bacon and burned pizza at the same time.
😅. It's called an exhaust fan. It's over the stove and everything that you cook gets sucked outside when you cook (this is for open concept kitchens. You also have to turn on the fan). The German apartments that I was in either didn't have an exhaust fan, or it wasn't properly installed (in my opinion). The stuff you were cooking was sucked away, but it just spat the smells and heat back into the apartment.
@@jessicaely2521
It's not an industrial fume hood, it physically can't catch everything without an enclosure. Also, they are optimized to catch vapor from the stove, anything not placed under it (grills, air fryers) or stuff that's finished and placed on the table will evade it even in an ideal scenario. Nothing beats a wall and a door.
@@Alias_Anybody😅 yes it does. You never tried it have you? If not zip it.
@@Alias_AnybodyI grew up with an open concept kitchen. Our 20 year old couches NEVER smelled like anything. The 50 year old house didn't smell like anything either.
agreed
*Shower heads:*
1) In Germany You not only have the shower heads in a flexible tube, but You also got a holder on the wall, where You can hang it and use it just like a fixed shower head.
2) Since I'm used to take shower in a sitting position, a shower head fixed to the wall above would really put me off.
3) Whenever I want to clean a bigger item in the bath tube, a flexible shower had really comes in *handy* ;-)
Top loading washing machines required much more water and they are not cleaning the laundry as good as as horizontal machines.
I'm so used to influencer videos now that I expected a "which is today's sponsor" regarding the cups at 3:00. XD I'm glad you dodged that bullet. 😸
😅😂 I can look for a discount code if you’d like? 🤣🤣🤣
Danke fuers Video, Hayley
Thank you very much for stopping by!
the shower thing made me laugh! so true!
I am the only one not having an open kitchen in my family and all of my friends, owning houses have too. I don't like open kitchens
totally agree with you on the shower head thing!
My house in Hungary was open plan as the previous owner had removed a few internal walls. My current place in Croatia has a traditional layout with hallway leading to kitchen, livingroom, bedrooms etc. That is easier to heat. Generally in Europe when washing machines went from manual to automatic operation (1950s / 60s) they also changed from topload to frontload. There are a few narrow toploaders but they still have a horizontal drum like the frontload machines.
As a short person from the US who lived in Germany, I absolutely hate top load washer and dryers. I can reach the bottom of my washer with some effort but I was house sitting someone else whose washer was taller. I actually bruised my ribs from getting clothes from the very bottom. I need a step stool 😮💨
Woah, there are reusable solo cups? A/C is also for taking humidity out of the air. When my family and I first moved back to Florida it was during fall. We went 3 months with our windows open 24/7. Then we had mildew growing on clothes, belts, bedding, walls, etc. This is when I put together it's because of the humidity. You would think the person who was born and raised in Florida would know this 😅. Now we have a dehumidifier running when we have the windows open.
I got my CocaCola glasses direct from the CocaCola christmas truck years ago
Oh wow I didn’t know that was a thing!! 🤔🤔
Frohe Ostern.
Thanks for the info on my name sake land and the beauty you have as well
Moin Winter, Linde! Nun bin ich auch hier! LOL!❤😅
All three washers of ours are front-load. For the longest time, I was under the impression that top loaders tend to damage clothes. That's why for our places, we only have front loaders. They supposedly save water, too, although I don't have a reference point for comparison purposes.
I feel the same way about the showerhead. At my house I have a handheld shower head. I get so angry when i go on vacation and they have that type of shower head, I am not impressed that it is a rain shower but cleaning that body part requires and a degrading posture to try to get the job done.
I shouldn’t laugh but it’s so true and I can only imagine what it looks like 😭😂
Yes, I always unclip the shower head from the holder to rinse myself down after applying shower gel.
LOL
Dutchie here, but we got those same glasses not from McD, but it was simply a gift with the purchase of a 4 (1.5L) bottle pack in the supermarket.
Our first washing machine (1960) was a top loader. But that was only the access to the horizontally rotating drum. It also has a spin dryer next to it in the same housing. Then we only had the front loaders. When I had my first appartment I "inherited" (bought it actually from the previous renters) a small top loader. Again with the drum rotating on a horizontal axis. I don't think those US-style top-loaders are available in Germany anyway. The lame agitation which necessitates more aggressive detergent simply prevents it. I have never seen such detergent being sold here. See where the red tide is coming from!
What I always liked about the top loaders was that you could throw in (or remove) additional items at any time in the cycle. That is only possible when the water level is very low inside a top loading washing machine. Or when you turn it off and have waited for some time.
I literally have that exact same microwave oven. LOL
As for water pressure, it all depends. I have experienced so many different levels of water pressure in the USA.
Hayley, how about Rolladen in Deutschland and window/door screens in the US?
Yes! I have talked about them before!!
@@HayleyAlexisOops...I must have missed that video. Auch der Wasserkocher...which most Germans have but many do not have blenders, lol...As my French father said:"Vive la difference!"
Oh wow.... Now that you mention it- I haven't seen too many blenders in Germany....
@@gabriellemoore4044there are a lot of Americans with a tea kettle. I have 6. I have one from the apartment we are in, 1 from Germany, and 2 that's been pass through the family since the 1900's. These tea kettles are electric. The other 2 are go on the stove. It's from my family 1800's. It's actually more energy efficient for 1 cup of water to use the microwave. If you're going to make liters of tea it's more energy efficient to use a tea kettle.
@@jessicaely2521Jessica, a "Wasserkocher" is just that, namely to boil (or heat at a high temp) water. Is that what an electric tea kettle is for?
4:04 you can sometimes find those Coke glasses in Dollar Tree
7:47 yes!!!! also, they start at like $27 for basic or handheld models, which you can install yourself (and remove when you move out), don't think of the $3000 Japanese ones as the only thing
I love those Coca Cola glasses! They are my favorite! 😂
And I drink Coca Cola with LOTS of ice. But it‘s the only drink I drink like that. With lemon. It‘s just too sweet otherwise.
There are top loading washing machines. I had one. Had to buy it myself for my first flat. It was a top loader because it was smaller. I did not have enough room for a normal one.
Thank you for this video. It was very entertaining.
3:50 😄Is that a shot from _American Pie?_
OF COURSE
The Twins😍
Hi Hayley, anotherthing is the toilett. When I was at my aunts house I was irritated about how that worked. It was a bunch of water and that was sucked away. I was worried about it might overflow. That was something I didn´t know before.
The microwaves create popcorn fine without the button ;)
That is true but it is still a funny detail that shows priorities between the usa and germany
My brother's family has an open kitchen, but they said the kitchen smells go everywhere and are not confined to the kitchen, requiring extensive airing the rooms. Not so nice in extreme temperatures, when you want to keep the heat or cold out.
For the shower head question, I do acrobatics 😅
The flat I'm living in, has a top loader for about 30 years now, well maybe 25. However the next one is probably going to be a front loader, since it will be installed in the basement instead then.
The older washing machines are better than the newer ones in my opinion 😅
I love the German laundromats where there is only one machine to take your money. It takes case, coins and cards. You put in the machine number and it goes. Imagine in the US where someone has to unlock 60 machines to get the money out every week.
Front loaders are so much better. I'm lucky to have those machines. I would prefer the German windows, but then they don't have screens there 😂 you can't win I guess. And I agree with the showers. Thank God our house came with the removable one. I always wonder how Americans clean their showers or bathtubs.. lol
It's called a bucket of water.
But we do have screens on our windows. Granted, screens are optional and many house don't have them but if you want screens you can have them.
@@jessicaely2521Which is a hassle and annoying. Removable shower heads are practical and make live a lot easier.
Just checked my cupboard for those McDonald CocaCola glasses. I have 18 of them in different designes (shapes) and colors. Basically from different years. Want me to send some over to you?
I will take all of them :P just kidding but thank you for asking!
Moin, nach Bayern und ein schönes Osterfest!
@@tasminoben686 Danke, das wünsche ich Dir auch. 🐰🥚🐣
Very interesting!!! I feel a little culture shock.
Now summers are hot I hate the fact that NO ONE seems to have air conditioning in Germany. I once woke up in hospital after a minor op and flung the bedclothes off as the temperature was 40 C. The nurse came round immediately to tell me to cover myself. So soon after an op I didn't know whether to be offended or delighted. Summers indoors are really becoming unbearable in Germany. Amazingly, there's an insane law here that limits AC to reducing temperatures indoors by a max 6C. Passed long before climate change when summer never went over 30C. AC laws urgently need revision/scrapping here.
If you can afford AC you elektricitet is too cheap.😅
lived in the States for a year and I HATED the Top loading washing machines. I have occasional back issues and dragging wet clothes from the bottom of the "Drum" while bent almost double to get at them was always threatening to give me another spinal shock.
How do US people with back issues manage?
Get a front loading one. 😂 we have them but people prefer tops 🫣
But you have to stoop down to pull out the wet clothing from a front-loader. I find this more uncomfortable.
@@annamc3947 I find them uncomfortable also. And if you have forgotten an item you can't throw it in after the machine has started. I really dislike front loaders.
I just confirmed my German microwave has no popcorn button. Something I never noticed! I love my popcorn homemade and so buttery you need paper towels. My mom eats a sack of microwave popcorn every evening. Once when visiting I found popcorn in the bed. That's not cool mom!
Not ice in milk lol.
...I think you mean "front loading." 😘
What did I say? 🤭🤣
@@HayleyAlexis I believe you said, side loading. Hahaha!!
Oh lordy.... 🤣🤣
You just don't need AC in Germany. (Special locations like grocery markets you do)
I just can't undrrstand, why there is still that stupid shower system in the US, even for cleaning it you need an extra bucket ..
As a kid I missed the disposer in the sink, now I know more about it ..
And the top loader, you can get them in Germany but they are most times smaller.
Not true anymore. It gets very hot here. 😢
I hope European governments wise up and include AC in housing and apartments. People lives are at stake.
As I architect, I think that the layouts of US homes are much better than German homes. En-suite bathrooms, built in closets, central AC and such amenities are something I would not want to miss anymore. Of course, you need more space to accomodate all these features.
I am completely remodeling the house I grew up in right now and I mixed both worlds: Radiant heating but also central AC, built in closets, open kitchen with side by side fridge and garbage disposal, separate laundry room etc.
Everyone is blown away when they see all these features that are so common in the US. Especially central AC since it is very rare here. Open kitchens are actually getting pretty common on new construction for some years now.
Oh and btw. I have and never had a microwave. This is the one US invention I really don´t have any desire to use.
The vents above the door are a thing of the past actually. It originates from the time where there was no central heating but a single source of heat like fireplace. Opening the vents let the warm air in (somewhat at least) without the need to keep the door open.
You didn't mention that houses in the US are mostly only wooden houses and get blown away by every lttile hurricane (depsite appearing quite regularly there...) and..yeah. AC in every house. Fantastic. Please tell me how you want to prevent climate change with that energy sucker. Oh, I forgot, the US do not care.
I guess I don't see the appeal of vuilt in closets unless it is a walk in closet. Because with smaller ones it seems like there is always some space to the side and on top that is hard to reach. And especially in a rental I would prefer the flexibility of a wardrobe.
But a microwave on the other hand is something I would not want to miss.
AC is for Weicheier. 😂
@@olafgogmo5426 Therefore as a German it only gets turned on on cooling mode above 140° Fahrenheit.
Florida - AC unit makes sense. In Germany - for 10 days over 30 ° C - not so much
I agree :)
Definitely, but I think it's a lot more than 10 days over 30", at least in North Bavaria. ;)
@@AnnaLee33 you'd think so but no, it is on average about 6 days ... at least the Bayrisches Landesamt für Umwelt says so.
Yes, unfortunately, there are hardly any kitchen appliances for popcorn in German households. Maybe it's because you could choke while eating popcorn, because the noisy rental apartments in Germany mean you're constantly getting a shock when your neighbor slams the door. There are no smoke detectors in Germany, not even in schools.
Die gibt es inzwischen auch in jeder Privatwohnung...
oh lord... this comment seems a little passive aggressive mixed with humor. I personally find German apartments a little louder than USA apartment (I have to agree with you there) but I do think that it has a lot to do with the normal working hours and amount of people on one space. That is true regarding smoke detectors but I havent heard about too many fires in Germany or fires killing people BUT in the USA I have heard of a few fires in buildings (with detectors) and people ended up dying so it is honestly dependent on so many things.
@@monikaschulz909 Also hier im Mehrfamilienhaus in Sachsen, sind keine Rauchmelder . Naja hier brennt auch schon seit drei Monaten kein Licht im Flur.
@@HayleyAlexis Of the six apartments here, only one is currently unoccupied and only two tenants work here. Only one person is making noise and is being looked after by the nursing office. But it's not hard to be loud because there is no privacy here and the floor vibrates with every step. Some situation works only , with little humor. But a lawyer isn't bad either
The police were here over 50 times last year because of “disturbing the peace.”
I know that maybe you have a very difficult apartment situation. I can only imagine how horrible/annoying it can be living with loud/inconsiderate neighbors! I do hope you can find some peace in your home
One very important thing you left out is the garbage disposer. These are "unwanted" by the communities in Germany.
Yes, we prefer to have less rats in our sewers ...
We don't want food in our sewage plants, but collect organic kitchen and garden waste in bins, which get collected every 2 weeks, and then go to compost. I guess it helps to keep the sewage plants smaller.
@@AnnaLee33 Yes - and it is what has been done with food scrapes for centuries - turned back into soil.
who needs popcorn really?
Everyone!!!
I'm 64 and I've never tasted popcorn!
@Phiyedough no one cares. Your life sounds boring and miserable.
@@PhiyedoughI know Germans who have never had a taco. At least they don't seem to be proud of that fact.
@@HayleyAlexis Reported as hate speech.
Something I haven't seen in Germany was the popcorn ceilings in the older homes. Thank God new places in the US are not doing this.
I think also the square ceilings are not a thing in Germany either…. They are so ugly to me but such an important piece of American design culture 😭😅
Let's face it. Shower heads...fixed on the wall. Only some one who doesn't know how to clean the shower... invented those. Cleaning means also - cleaning the opposite site of the shower head and to rinse it down (cleaner etc.) ... you take the shower head with the flexible tube and rinse it down. Again..the shower head fixtures - without the possibility to hand shower, flexible tube - are highly unpractical and annoying.
Never seen such a plastic Coca Cola "glass". Maybe because I don't like the sweet stuff.
The Coca Cola glasses you get at Mc Donalds are not plastic, they are real glass. The newest ones from 2023 are opaque, while older ones are more transparent and shiny.
