Would you like to see more kids toy conversions? If you want to try something like this, don't forget to check out my shop at www.broadswordwargaming.com for all of the materials used :)
Yes, to more toy conversions! Will do!
The broken CDs as the ice along the shore is absolutely brilliant! Well done on this build!
Thank you so much! :)
Was it CDs or their cases?
Yeah that was a cool effect, hadn’t seen that before
@@jeffhatcher6585 the cases.
Yeah definitely the jewel cases, though I'm sure you can find a use for the CDs in a board, too 😁
I've never seen anyone do the hard plastic for ice before, but it turned out fantastically, especially for how little effort it was.
Awesome board build! Resin pour came out well and smooth, bubble free. This would work well with some vampires for AoS. More kids toys to board builds!
Thanks so much buddy! :)
One of the best parts about adapting a toy or repurposed trash piece for terrain is how easily you can camouflage the entire thing just by covering or detailing the edges. The thickening of the broken pieces implies the rest of the wall being thicker, and the viewer's mind fills in the rest.
Nice results!
I'd love to see more uses of kids toy conversions; both miniatures and terrain
100% on brand for our D&D games. Great build.
Glad you like it! It would work so well for an old wizards tower quest! Head on into the basement and fight some monsters. :)
Love the strong contrast of the dark board with the white snow. And great value that kids building ✌️
1:03 "I'm fondling the wood to make people watching think that I know what I'm doing". very professional looking Ollie
Looks like a great Frostgrave board.
I keep meaning to give that a go!
Technically what you’re doing here is sculpture. And I love it
Ah thanks so much! It was super fun to be honest, I'd not really done stuff like this before!
@@BroadswordWargaming could have fooled me.
There are a few gaps and holes, which I would have covered with styrofoam and paint but overall it's a superb build, as always!
Keep up the good work, dude!
Really fantastic! I so very much appreciate you walking through what you were experimenting with and learning.
You're more than welcome. Hopefully people can take something from the process (the good and the bad).
At 11:58, I thought Arnold Schwarzenegger busted in to tell us to use the geek gaming matte scenic sealant, and to get to the chopper, lol. But all joking aside, awsome video. This board turned out looking really good and has given me ideas to do with some playsets i have put up for this exact same thing. Gotta love those pink tools, lol.
"Get to the sealant"
And thanks! Honestly, just give it a go. If in doubt, throw snow all over it haha.
@@BroadswordWargaming hahaha, damn that was good
The board looks great all the little details with the ice and the grass around the trees really add to the finished board.
A perfect board for Age Of Sigmar narrative game with the Grand Alliance of Death.
Really like that you kept in the bits that didn't work initially and how you solved it.
I dig it, the broken up ice river is unique I've never seen anyone even try to make that effect before.
WOW, this turned out really well. Fair play for taking a chance on a toy as a basis for the build, great idea.
I now use the Modelling Compound and its great and your 'tuna salad' consistency is spot on. It is very easy to work with but like you mentioned, it will setup quicker than you expect if you use too much at one time.
Modellign compound really is so good. I use it for everything now!
What a great board build! The results look just amazing.
Thanks a bunch!
Awesome build! Conversions like this are some of my favorites.
Excellent work! I love how you worked in the toy and the snow looks SO good!
Loved the video, takes me back to my Rogue Trader days scratching bits together for scenery.
One idea about resin pours. If I've a base similar to the one you used in the video, you could use bathroom sealent rather than hot glue to secure the plastic with wooden strips screwed into the base to help seal it against leaks.
It reminds me very old White Dwarf article when they wrote how guy turned his son's plastic toy dump trucks into Speed Freaks looted wagons.
A fantastic mix of campy designs and excepent terrain skills! Great work man :)
This turned out fantastic! I can't believe it started as a plastic toy by the end.
scrolling youtube thumbnails... "why is that a retrofitted 'imaginext wizard's tower'? or perhaps the re-released version 'imaginext mad scientist's lab?' being retrofitted into some sweet terrain pieces? this is top level!"
well done, sir
Looks great, nice job
Awesome work! It would be super cool to see a long term project making adjoining tiles for this one!
I really like using the plastic CD case shards to simulate broken ice. Clever!
Looks great dude, actually really like the dark river and you made that kids toy fit in really well
17:50 you should build more boards Ollie. Your board building got me here in the first place
Awesome build, it looks great😁❤️👍🏻
Excellent build
You blew my mind with that cd technique! It turned out so well! I've got to try that one day
Love this. Absolutely, bloody genius. Well done.
Great build mate! Love how it turned out.
Oh my goodness! I had this exact toy when I was little and it's been sitting in the basement for years gathering dust. Glad to finally pull it out and do something with it. My school has a Warhammer 40k (and age of sigmar) club and I think they'll like having this as some new terrain
this is a very nice board to play in for warcry vs a vampire band, its awesome!
Great work, I’ll have to try that resin water trick
Exceptional work as always!
Ever since the colosseum video did the rounds (which I'd forgotten was you!) I've been keen to see more of these kids toy to scenery conversions. Loved the build, keen to see more!
Must do more, for sure! They're an interesting project, and this one changed so much on the way. :) Glad you enjoyed it!
Amazing work. CDs for ice is genius!
Looks great!
Biggest thing I've seen someone like Luke Towan use for resin pours is to use pva glue and tape. so you apply the pva around the edge where you're going to scrape and prep for painting anyways and then apply the tape around the edge letting the glue make the water proof seal. Works great for small parts of the edge. Otherwise for full resin pours i've seen people use clear plastic and more glue.
I think I have this exact resin kit.
Congrats on the board, it's well done. Those CDs ice shards are awesome !!!
This is so amazing 🤩 I loved your colosseum build too
This is an amazing build! Inspired idea to use CDs as ice, time to raid my dusty CD collection and try it myself
Fantastic idea and great execution. 👏
I love how accessible your terrain vids are. Hope that's not insulting! But it's often intimidating and your vids are inspiring to give it a go. Would love to see more kids toys terrain stuff
Thank you, and no, not insulting at all! My aim is to give people the confidence to try these things for themselves. 😃
Stuff goes wrong (it did on this board), and that's just part of the hobby, so I just want people to see it happens to everyone and not to worry.
I definitely plan on doing more kids toy board, it's quite a nice feeling in the end. 😃
I’ve never seen the broken CDs as I’ve before, that was very clever and it looks great
Oliver, you did a great job!☺
Looks great
Looks fantastic Ollie
Thanks 👍
Dude! This is awesome!!
Really cool build, bravo, 👍
Damn! That turned out awesome. I’ve always been apprehensive trying snow effects but you made that look easy. I’ll have give it a go😁👍🏻
Thanks so much! :) Honestly, I was terrified too haha.. But just lob it on and do as much as you like. If in doubt, throw more stuff at it until it looks good. 😀
Nice. The ice idea was genius. I grab a decent amount of kids toys from the local dollar stores and thrift stores. Mostly diecast cars for ruined vehicles or sci-fi vehicles like spaceships. Toys work great and with a nice paint job look really nice on the game table.
not gonna lie, shattered plaster of paris rubble would have helped blend that lower level really well. More convincing rubble at the bottom like the mass of the building is laying on the floor.
That said, incredible work, extremely inspiring for my own projects.
Well done, Olly!! That looks absolutely fantastic, and fair play for just going for it with the resin pour. I swear by Geek Gaming scenics too- their snow looks amazing, must give that a bash soon:) (edited spelling)
Thank you , Broadsword .
Cheers Oli'
🐺
I have that toy! I had it sit aside to tear apart for terrain ironically.
What a result, looks great 👍
Thanks 👍
Great build and would never have thought that was a child’s toy at the end
I watched for the snow effects. I think they look great on this board but not what I am looking for to use on bases. Nice job and color choices!
fantastic project, nicely done!
Glad you like it!
Awesome build! Resin tip: it won’t adhere to silicone, so maybe lining the river edges with silicone molds or a silicone mat or some other silicone thing and then building up coverage for leaks will give a cleaner edge.
amazing job
I simply love it!
Gorgeous!
Thank you! 😊
If you do a resin pour that will be on a ligher background and at a risk of yellowing, add a small amount of blue dye as it supposedly slows the yellowing.
This really looks great. I'm planning to transform an old MASK. toy (Boulder Hill) into an Ork base for 40k, and your videos give me some good advice how to accomplish that.
Sounds great!
I hope that Boulder Hill is pretty well trashed already if you're going to do it. That set is worth quite a bit, even in poor condition.
@@Mike_Jones1980 The condition is okay. Some parts are missing, like stickers, tubes and figures. And of course the original packaging and instructions, if the set had any. In this condition I've found it multiple times on ebay on a price around 30 €, so not more expensive than any terrain from GW 8even less so, considering the size). Of course you can also find the same set for triple digits on the price tag, but that's totally over value, except perhaps if the set is still in mint condition.
Think it’s come out awesome! Be interesting to see how it plays… Cracking effort! 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
Really cool
Another great use of an old toy that doesn't need to be thrown out.
looks great
Thanks!
Preferred the board before you put the sno on thought looked good
The funny part for me is i just found that exact set at my local thrift shop and i didn't get it as i couldn't see it being used as such. This certainly proved me wrong!
That look so good! well done :D Never thought to use smashed CD cases as frozen ice, genius move there
You can use some pieces of plexiglass for the edges when you do a resin pour, should come off easier
amazing!!!!!! really makes me want to give this a go
Great video Olly - I got a €100 voucher for your shop for Christmas (they know me well!) so I'll be placing an order with you for some Imperial Guard when the new models are available for general release. Keep up the great work!
Great job
Thanks so much for not doing 3D printing and doing cool terrain..amazing tower👍‼‼
Great build , awesome resin work ( hit glue gun is now in my to buy list) more kids toys build please.
So cool! Fun to watch the whole thing come together--even if there are a few bumps in the road. Perhaps next time, at the end of the video we could get a few more, longer wider shots to see the whole piece.
Thanks so much!
if you spray iso alcohol on the plastic it will release the hot glue and then the border will come off easier. You can also use tape it doesn't have to be plastic to edge the resin unless it is a deep pour as the heat from that may warp the tape.
"she's got a brand new car, looks like a jaguar, it's got leather seats, it's got a CD player!"
great result, cd cases was an inspired idea.
Glad you think so!
Bro 1st punt? You did an outstanding job
Ok finally finished, got interrupted. This is really awesome, I would absolutely love to get my hands on one of those castles you used but I'm in the USA so I doubt they're anywhere over here 😹
This is awesome 😎 only thing i would suggest is maybe some icicles hanging from parts of the castle.
I think it looks awesome, but since you said you were going for a wizard tower I expected more interior decoration. Perhaps a couldron and a few booksleves.
The way the ice is black and the snow dust gets in the cracks around the ice hurt immersion a bit but it’s grand otherwise. Having just a bit more of a visible gradient under the water would help too.
Great build. The toy was the least interesting thing about it. Loved the broken river ice out of CDs, and your approach to snow, sprinkling it from above like actual snow, instead of stippling it on like cake icing, was refreshing and really sold it. I know you said you wished you'd colored the river, but icy winter rivers are dark, almost black, and it looked very convincing to me; after watching this I felt a need to put on a sweater.
Unless I'm aiming for a deep pour, I've found that High Gloss Polyeurethane is a better option than resin. The stuff you can find in a craft store in what looks like a large bottle of craft paint.
It's very thick when you go on and can work to keep it from going over the edge, but flows well enough to fill things in if you're just a bit careful there
Pretty impressive! great use of a toy - only thing that turns me off even having a go at something like this is that there is limited replayability - once you know the best spots to deploy etc it's kind of done. Having modular terrain is much handier for actual gaming. Fair play though as a one off this is brilliant and well done.
only had Ciara's tools... It's not like she's ever taken anything off of you... 🤣
Haha, it is nice to get one back.. once in a while.
Oi!
@@ciara7458 woops. Caught.
I found this exact toy in my cellar and always thought it would be a really cool terrain piece. Looks like you beat me to it!
Nice! Get it done. It's actually a really good scale too.
Man, for the next time in the greenstuff shop you have a saline solution to make ice effects, its cheap and it looks great to be applied in some places
Bought a Hogwarts castle from the charity shop to do something similar... but my kids won't stop playing with it to let their Daddy play with it. No fair! :)
Great vid.
Haha, your day will come!
