    On August 2020 BoB Beechy passed away he was a great guy and a fantastic inventor, He also gave me my first ride on a recumbent Trike. Thanks, Bob, and may you ride the heavens with a big smile. hoping that heaven has a trike ready for you so you can start your next adventure in style. RIp.Thanks again.

    @plichhayy1 The 4 wheeled 'pedal kart', as they are often called, was imported from China and I found it used, on the internet. 'BERG' from the Netherlands is probably the largest manufacturer of these unique vehicles, and they can be purchased online. As delivered, they have limited use, hence they are constantly discarded. So, try and find a used one. With modifications, especially to the gear range and seating, they become efficient workhorses for us pedal pushers!

    Pretty cool snow plow I use to cycle a lot when I was a kid and always wanted a plow for my mountain bike. I wonder if a V-plow would work better for deeper or heavier snow? Which bike pushes it better?

  • @BobBeechy
    @BobBeechy  13 років тому +1

    @swho23 The plow's ability is limited by the snow conditions and the ability of the operator. Powder snow can be moved to the height of the blade which is 12"(304mm). Heavy snow requires using less of the blade. Observe video #19 to see me moving deeper snow. As the snow accumulates on the blade, I have to scoop less to keep the momentum going. This plow is still in its prototype stage and has only one speed. Basically, you can move as much snow as you and the snow plow's blade can push.

    Is there a way to make the reverse action on the pedals LOCKED instead of having it spin for the tricycle (i.e. get rid of the clutch like mechanism)?
    Looks like a great idea.

    February 16th I started building an all terrain 4 wheel drive & 4 wheel steer pedal kart. The frame is mostly finished. I designed the frame so that I can sit lower than a "wagon" type frame. The drive train is my next step. It will have multiple speeds with Gokart #41 sprockets and chain with a super low creeper gear. I also have a Comet Gokart reverse gearbox. It will have a hitch on the rear too. I'm not sure if I will use a cheap push blade from a lawn tractor or build the blade myself.

    @fattirefool Thank you. My design for the trike should work on your pedicab. One important suggestion: Install a 1/4" thick strip of Lexan or similar type of plastic for the wear bar on the bottom of the blade. It will slide easier than the ABS and save the blade. Did I mention it is a lot of fun moving snow around this way? lol

  • @BobBeechy
    @BobBeechy  12 років тому

    @elitec5r I like my trike because it has a dual-drive system on the split rear axle which gives constant traction. Reverse would be nice but would not work on my trike's drive system. I do have a Sturmey Archer 3 speed hub with a reverse feature that was designed for tricycles. I plan on using it on the quad after I install a differential in the rear axle.

  • @BobBeechy
    @BobBeechy  13 років тому

    @Fireheart528 Dual-tired tandem axles and chains would work well for traction but it would limit the plow's turning ability. To overcome the directional stability of the rear axles, the frame would have to be split in the middle similar to a Case/IH Steiger tractor design with articulating steering. It has been a design change I have been contemplating for another plow project. Multiple gearing and differential axles would also help the design!

    Fast (5x faster than shoveling AT LEAST)
    Easy
    Fun
    No back pain

    And based on your QUAD BIKE set up, you're obviously not!

    @PIZZABOX11 I have already changed the sprocket gearing to provide more torque. This is a single speed drive train, so the chainwheel had to be changed to a smaller sprocket.

  • @BobBeechy
    @BobBeechy  13 років тому

    @bert26a A V-plow does work better in deeper snow when plowing a single lane. As for pushing and pulling...pulling is easier but pushing clears the surface for the drive tires. There are several V-plows for bicycles on youtube and some work very well. Carbide studded tires are available for mountain bikes, and someone in the U.S. is marketing a kit to convert a mountain bike into a 2 wheel drive bicycle. With those items, you would have a killer snow bike. Just build a plow!

  • @BobBeechy
    @BobBeechy  12 років тому

    @wilXwyane The amount of snow this plow can move depends on the physical ability of the rider, and the weight of the snow. 10" of powder is easier than 2" of slush. The rider can adjust the amount of snow the blade scoops and pushes. I prefer a slow, steady pace and take periodic breaks to allow my body to replenish its energy. The fun factor is immense.

    The Tractor Supply Company (TSC) 4 wheel pedal karts have lots of negative feedback on their site. So instead I'm considering an entry level Berg which retails for $629. They are on Ebay also plus there are several attachments available.

      To be honest, it's not really economically feasible. The manual go-kart retails for 200USD, a low end garden tractor plow retails for 250-350USD and it would need 50-150USD in miscellaneous parts to cover new brackets, gearing, tires, etc.
      And in the end you're stuck with a plow that lacks enough weight to push wet snow. An issue I've experienced first hand, with a plow equip garden tractor without wheel weights & weight box. Believe me, the overall performance was really poor. Especially in comparison to a two-stage snowthrower equip garden tractor I once owned.
      That said, I really like what he created and I love how nimble it appears to be. IF by some miracle a complete conversion kit could be produced for under 200USD total, then I'd say it might be a worthy investment for some. But I think most people would look at the total cost and buy a walk-behind snowthrower.

    • @BobBeechy
      @BobBeechy  9 років тому

      Da Blueguy Ironically, your experience with a garden tractor is the same one I had, and it was the inspiration to build this snow plow. Our old Sears Custom 6HP tractor was useless in moving any snow that was more than a few inches thick, yet, I could still shovel that snow and more, by hand. My body had more versatility. So, I thought by adding a mechanical extension to my muscles, I could move more snow than by hand shoveling, and not get stuck all the time, like the old Sears tractor. My theory proved correct...within limits. When I reach those limits, I have to call on my old Ford Lgt165, which replaced the Sears tractor forty years ago. You are also correct on the economical feasibility of the consumer retail sale of the snow plow, at this moment. However, this vehicle can be operated around humans in places where motorized snow removal equipment may not be. This would create a unique niche market for contractor sales. The seated position also creates a safety factor for the operator. When ice is encountered, the vehicle would slide or skid, and nothing would happen to the operator. If the operator was standing with a hand shovel and encountered a patch of ice, they would most likely fall and injure themselves. Employee injuries from falls are a serious problem for snow removal contractors. (I was given this bit of advice from a contractor who saw my snow plow on display at a bicycle show. He was really impressed by its function. It was at this show that another contractor wanted to buy it, as he had the snow removal contract for the convention center, where it would be a big promotional item for his company. Unfortunately, I was not willing to sell my only prototype!) The 'green' factor of the snow plow could also be used to help secure or renew snow removal contracts within urban areas.

    • @BobBeechy
      @BobBeechy  9 років тому

      101southsideboy Thank You! Many decades ago, when I was very young and impressionable, I was fortunate to meet the inventor of the Jiger ATV. ( It was the original, six wheeled, personal off road vehicle.) During our discussions, he would constantly use the term 're-invent', in suggesting ideas for new development. This, and my father's old saying of, "let's make a little modification", would make me look at the world in a different perspective. A lot of time and energy can be saved by just modifying something to make it better, or by taking an existing idea, and re-inventing it. I admired both men, and hope my creations inspire new generations of creative thinkers.

    it would only be used to plow a decent size driveway

    • @BobBeechy
      @BobBeechy  9 років тому

      +Dave Moore Hi Dave, I haven't seen one of these in person, so I can only speculate that it could work. The wheels are plastic, so the drive connection may have to be reinforced. My quad has a steel drive wheel and it broke, along with the drive chain a few times, so be prepared for breakage. You will also have to lower the drive gear ratio. The simple way is to replace the pedal crank with one that has a 28 tooth sprocket or less, like those found on most BMX bikes. A simple moldboard or plow can be made from a 6" or larger diameter ABS drain pipe, cut in half. The smaller the plow, the easier it is to push. You will have design and weld or bolt together the plow's swivel and mounting bracket. Adding a chain to the drive wheel will help, or change the tires to a large lug design as found on snow blowers. Keep it simple and have fun!
