quake 2 was THE GAME we played on the business class computers when the teacher left the room
Discovering a game you passed on is actually a banger is a great surprise. Wish you could have been there during it's heyday. The multiplayer community was pretty amazing.
From a guy who did play a ton of quake multi of the first 3 games the banger I missed was Tribes: Ascend. The skill of quake with the community of early TF2, plus insane nitron pack jumping stuff and high skill rocket airshots with travel times over 2 seconds that actually mattered in team gameplay. Can't believe I missed it.
@@Suiseisexy same, I didn't discover Tribes until it was kind of too late. The few times I got to play it was a blast. There was definitely a hell of a learning curve to that game.
@@scottcollins5240 Ahh, dang, that's how you know gaining the skill would be worth it too, when it has that peak you get to the other side of and turn into a cool kid.
I can relate. About a year ago i got a chance to play the original singleplayer Unreal that i somehow always ignored because everyone just played Unreal Tournament.
And i was astonished how awesome and catchy the game was despite being so old.
@@Youda00008 I wish Nightdive would remaster that one. The multiplayer in that game was literally just UT Beta.
Quake 2 was all about the Multiplayer. Everyone knew each other, knew who the top players were, what servers and times people played (using Quakenet IRC, Newsgroups and Gamespy). It was a huge community of thousands of people and Q2 was the only game in town (1998-99). Clan and CTF tournaments were also well organized, the mod scene was amazing. Deathmatch, 4v4, Duels, CTF, Lithium, Rocket Arena, Action Quake2. I don't think any new game can ever recreate anything like that again. The single player was kinda meh...
I miss it. The quake3 years after that were good eats but then the counterstrike days came and we retired to play the TF2 as old men and trolls. Realguns-instadeath is so lame, there's no movement, no athleticism.
I wanted to comment about he forgot about the best part of Quake II being it's multiplayer and than did see your comment so I put my reply here.
Good times back in the day while going to a friends house over the weekend, bring my PC and have my friend, his brothers and some more friends all together on Quake II multiplayer. The first time getting best routes, using the grapple to fly through the levels and team work brought us much joy, competing with other groups making us more competitive online but also at ever bigger growing lan parties which hosted tournaments. Man I miss those days and as you said what was going on than and the spirit of it all can never recreated again.
those people were absorbed into Half-Life when it came out
My childhood game! The weapons was so cool. TRESPASSER! Always gave me a fright and sent me into panic 😂
Everyone took a dump on this game, while I literally got it the same year it came out and have been replaying it every few years since. It was a pain to play on my PC at first, but as I switched PCs throughout the years, it got so lightweight that I literally played it on a netbook. I remember I had to recompile the exe and the dlls to make it support the netbook's screen resolution. Fun times.
When I played for first time Q1 demo, free from internet, I had an old 486 PC with 100mhz and math coprocessor, with exactly 8MB of Ram, which was the min req for the game, even the demo. I remember I have needed to halt the loading of win 95, and finish it steep by steep, in order to avoid most of not-essential RAM consumer process... Otherwise, the game just don't run because the lack of memory... yes, great times! :)
@@edgarguinartlopez8341 I had a friend with a slower 486 with an ISA video card and 4 megs of RAM, while I was rocking a Pentium with a PCI video card and 8 megs of RAM. Quake 1 (the demo) ran very well on mine and it was a slideshow on his. We used to joke that it played like a turn-based strategy game on his machine, so he could plan his next move.
Nice to hear someone else appreciate Quake 2. I didn't appreciate the journalists of the day crapping on Q2 to make a name for themselves. Quake 2 became another favorite for me. I always liked how partial damage was reflected in the appearance of enemies. I don't think ID gets enough recognition for the enemy A. I., especially in Q2. The enemies work together to flank you, dodge and duck. In comparison, Duke Nukem 3D (I like Duke 3D) the enemies will shoot through each other and never attack anyone, but you. Don't forget, you can mod bots to suit your exact play style, in case you can't find others to play multiplayer. (Not sure about X-Box, I play on PC.) Many more good things to say about Q2, but I need to go play Q2 now, too.
It is amazing how good Q2 is!!! The hand idle animation puts BF2042 to shame 25 years later
quake 4 is a direct sequel that picks up just before the ending of quake 2
Q4 is a solid underrated game, too bad it didn't have bots and polished multiplayer out-of-the-box... RIP
Quake 2 Rocket Arena was one of the greatest mods ever made. Also, Quake2 introduced us to one of the greatest weapons of every FPS ever. The RAILGUN.
this game is why i bought my first 3d card
Lol. Same here.
Creative Labs Voodoo 2 ftw
If I recall correctly, while the original version didn't have a weapon wheel, you could map keys to pre-select a weapon or power-up to activate on a separate keypress. Since you couldn't slow down the game in multiplayer, it was useful to queue up a quad damage and activate when you see someone
Welcome to Stroggos, buddy. I mean -
TRESPASSER
I was a big Q2 fan back in the day, picked up this new version and got platinum trophy by accident lol
Man. You should commit more to your channel. It has all the makings of a huge channel. Good luck
I get easily overwhelmed by too many comments to reply to at once, but that's way too kind to not answer. Thank you!!!
Unfortunately when one assumes, they miss out. There's an old expression that goes something like "When you assume, you make an ass of yo(u) and me.".
A similar thing happened with a lot of people and Doom 64. Doom 64 was a fantastic game, but people thought it would just be an N64 port of Doom, so it was ignored.
Either way, better late than never. Quake 2 is a fantastic game. It was the first game I ever played online.
IMO this was the Quake game that needed a remaster the MOST. Q2 was infamously rushed and raw.
Which is just how I loved it back in the day, rushed and raw. The remaster sucks, because the Berserkers JUMP at you now! How dumb is that?
@@Foebane72 it was an animation / attack that was in the original, but they chose not to allow them to use it. I guess we know why... now!
@@j0hn3ntwistleAccording to Nightdive, it wasn't cut due to balance or design concerns but rather just because id ran out of time. Still, what you said was my initial thought as well lol.
@@Foebane72A patch released a couple days ago that rebalanced that attack, reducing its damage, giving it a telegraph (by god did it need that) and letting you dodge it by jumping. I haven't tried it, but it should be actually fun now.
I used to play "rocket sniper" with ai turned off and pretend i was just a stealth master lol.
I was 7
The QUAKE 2 campaign was a blind spot for me and I played QUAKE 2 campaign in 1999 on PS1 when I was in my early 30s ..My memory of QUAKE 2 was multiplayer couch 4 player split screen which me and my friends played a lot back then . Currently playing Quake 2 remastered on PS4. And wow this campaign is amazing and very fun to play! Thanks for this video.
Now Remaster Quake 4. The lightwork in Q4 was masterful. Update Quake 4s gameplay to make it less sloggish, upscale the textures, etc and it would be excellent.
Not too long ago me and some bois and gals gathered in my sis' place to play some Quake 2 on Steamdeck. Just got few Playstation/Xbox gamepads and ran local multiplayer displaying game on big TV. It reminded me of good times when I played Quake 2 on Playstation as a kid, but now with good framerate, actually full-blown PC Quake 2 maps and modern controls. It was a blast! Funniest part was how easy it was to run this thing - it just works and it's perfect. Pick the gamepad you like and go for it!
Quake 2 and Half life still masterpeace comparing to FPS shit today
I couldn't agree more , also I'm back in quake arena on xbox series I love it
To be fair, duke nukem3d, blood1-2, hexen1-2, unreal, quake all are much better then most modern fps games. I replayed them recently and honestly all were as good as I remembered.
It was because John Romer opted out from Quake after Quake 1 release and then a group of people came in to take the project. It's like comparing Resident Evil 1 remake to Resident Evil 4. Same title name but two completely different games. Quake 1 had more of a monster/demonic vibes while Quake 2 had a robot futuristic vibes. I prefer Quake 2 over Quake 1 but the Beastiary on Quake 1 is better than Quake 2 for me. I just love the Shambler!
I can remember playing this alongside Interstate 76, pure kino, then on the original Playstation, which was a blinding conversion, it had multiplayer as well, which saw many a game back in the day.
This is my exact story. Played this on Game Pass. I was like "ohhhh I get it."
Interesting story on how you skipped Quake II back in 1997. My reasoning was because they changed the plot completely from the Lovecraftian Horror to Sci-Fi. That disappointed me the most. Quake II is still a great game although honestly, I prefer Quake 4 cos of the storyline and graphics.
My favourite part of the remaster is the enemy behaviour tweaks. Enemies are so much more aggressive and mobile than they used to be, which makes the moment to moment gameplay far superior to the original
I think we can all say you’re mainly talking about the Beserker. In the original, the Beserker was at best a medium enemy. Now it’s one of the hardest due to its lethal jump attack which sends you often flying to your death somewhere. I love it.
Quake II was and still is one of my favorite FPS games of all time. It's just incredible. Delighted to find someone discovering how great it is even in 2023.
I loved Quake and when Quake II came around it felt kind of cold and dull. I had not been following the news at the time and had no idea that it was because John Romero had left id.
Not sure if this was added later via mods or the remakes but if you look at the crates in Quake 1 they have the Strog symbol on them, so, they are -kinda- connected.
nah it was like that in the original too
The ending of Call of the Machine pretty much removes all doubt on that one (if you know, you know).
@@kveller555 Niggurath
That makes me think of how in Doom 1, on E2M8 you can see images of the Icon of Sin and Archvile on the cubes.
They had those Doom 2 sprites already planned or something? I've love to know.
The Strogg presence in Quake 1 is a retcon. I don't believe the Strogg were ever a thing before Quake 2, chronologically speaking. Romero wanted to make a medieval themed game with melee combat as a possible focus when he was designing Quake 1's theme and concept. Carmack disagreed and made him make a shooter like Doom, which pissed him off and he left to make Daikatana... another shooter. It was a very weird period in Romero's career where few of his decisions seemed to make any sense.
You should also understand they enabled AI behaviors in this release that make the game more fun in some ways, except that damn jump attack the berserkers do. It makes the game go from kindof a boring slogfest to a somewhat brutally challenging and fun experience. This might be a reason why people before thought the game was more bland than it used to be. It really is more fun now from the AI behavior updates alone. The game is no longer a cake walk of blasting braindead strogg.
As a fan of Quake II back in the day who completely passed on the console releases after being turned off by Doom 64's creepier and more clay-like visuals, I had no idea Quake II 64 was its own campaign in the style of the original.
Loved getting to catch up on that all these years later.
Not as good as Quake II, but I similarly slept on Turok 2 until recently. That game is surprisingly fun. Given how hard it was to play on the N64 back in the day though, I don't blame myself too much. Night Dive strikes again!
The grunt gets a bit old while strafe jumping, but it does let you know where other players are.
You basically opened a cold case Quake moment. You've done it. Retro head!
0:20 Wolfenstein 3D is the third in the series (the original games by Muse Software were top-down stealth). It was going to get a proper sequel developed by Apogee, but after ID cancelled the project, it was reworked into Rise of the Triad: Dark War (which also got a remaster recently).
Just wait until this guy hears about Hexen
BTW yes, the original PC version could have handled the enemy load of the shooting galleries in Call of the Machine.
Remember Powerslave? I played the hell outta that back in 97
Quake having too little weapon variety? wth have you been smoking
"Trespasser"
Love Q2. Still have it installed on my PC :)
I played Quake 2 online a lot back in the day, for about 15 years, from its debut in 1997 to until 2012, when the Q2 servers started drying up. And most of that was on 56k dialup, until I got fiberoptic by 2007. But I was still good as an HPB with a 150-250ms ping, heh. My favorite mods of those days were Lithium, Awaken, WoD & Lox, among some other forgotten mods. The Remaster looks ok, but I wish it got more of an (bigger) overhaul. I understand that they were trying to keep the look as much as possible for nostalgia. The textures for me are just not as dense & sharp-looking as I would have wanted, since they still kept the still-relatively low-poly models. I was looking more for the Quake2 RTX look with overhauled models rivaling the models in Quake4 & ET-QuakeWars, for an even better realism, but I suppose that would have taken even longer to make/remake. Many have said that the RTX version looks "shiny", but to me it just exudes more realism. Of course they could have dialed down some of the shininess in the RTX version & then applied it here. Oh well, that's just my critique. I won't get the remaster, it just still looks the same as the original, which I still have the install discs.
I had a cable modem back then. I'm running around in multiplayer alone when _poof_ someone starts killing me. *WTMFF?* I didn't know it, but q2 automagically starts a server, and q2 clients scan LANs automatically. Back then, cable modems put everyone on the same loop with NO security. Fortunately the guy who invaded my PC only came to kill me.
I always missed Quake whenever I played Quake 2.. the movement and the gunplay, bar the railgun, are so much better in Quake.. but that being said, the Call of the Machine expansion in the remaster is absolutely amazing. It's so much better than the base levels or even the period released expansions. It's worth a playthrough.
Quake 2 multiplayer LAN ruled in my time...
congrats on the find
Q2 was one of my childhood faves
The first real 3d game I ever played was _q2test._ Then I had to play _Quake_ while waiting for the full game.
When this came out I was in my 30s and could handle it on the hardest level.
Now, not so much.
Still, it brought back some sweet memories.
1200fps if you use original q2
You need opengl mode to run 1200fps, software renderer mode can barely pump 200fps due to it’s cpu limited.
Letting old engines run at thousands of FPS really burns up your GPU.
@@peterpan408 if you have proper cooling it shouldn’t be an issue.
@@peterpan408 it runs at 1200 and gpu yawns while stirring drink
Assuming it's just like the original Quake engine in that regard, it has a 72 fps cap by default because physics start breaking beyond that.
Yes the sound is great and was in that way since q1; you want not play q with low level sound because half of fun goes away :)
I just started playing the revised Quake 2 (after having played it a lot as a kid) yesterday, and now I feel attacked
Crazy that you missed it, Thats like owning an original xbox but having never seen anything from Halo and assuming it was just going to be another marathon game.
I lived in a small country town with no internet and all the boys in my school knew about quake 2 from magazines. The hype was huge
Yeah, Q2 is legendary, one of the most influential FPS of all time. Half-Life itself was built on a modified version of the Q2 engine. I can't quite grasp the comments in here saying that the game was slagged off on release. From everything I saw in the 90s, it was acclaimed by all.
02:56 Pinball Dreams/Fantasies ghost/church/haunter table sound track? Something else?
Now check out the VR mod for quake 2 and you'll never wanna go back to flat.
The Edge is one of the best DM maps ever created
Strogg Vs. Borg Deth Battle!
quotes: Better late than never.
Night Dive is a studio that's really on my radar these days. I can't wait to see what other amazing classics they remaster.
I had the same experience. I was bored with Quake/Duke at the time so I made the same assumption. I've been playing the shit out of the remaster!
Yeah, q2 is a "better late than never" game
The reason why Quake 1 turned out the way it did was because of design conflict. Romero wanted to make an FPS/RPG hybrid with melee combat (he would later repurpose Heretic for this vision as Hexen with Raven Software). Carmack overruled him and said that it would be a shooter, because it's what they're known for, and they're riding a huge trend wave. Romero left in anger believing that he and the other developers had sold out. Judging by how Hexen and its sequel turned out, Romero's ego was not entirely justified here. Although it holds a special place in my heart, Hexen is objectively not that appealing of a game. And yet...
Quake 2 is what Quake 1 would have looked like without Romero's creative input, and it's kind of a shame that we got _another_ sci-fi space marine shooter game. With (marginally) worse level design. The eldritch castles and abominations of 1 were a welcome new theme, although the exact same "teleporter goes wrong" plotline was copied from Doom. 2 had a dedicated multiplayer following, but it kinda became the black sheep of the franchise after 3 came out. 1 had extremely well-polished singleplayer levels (known for starting the speed runner culture in America, in fact) and 3 had well-polished multiplayer. 2 was just there, and it worked perfectly well enough, even without either of the outstanding features of its predecessor or successor.
Quake*
wtf, underrated channel...go for it dude!
omg, Quake 2 was the first game to give me serious nightmares...
I like Quake 2 over Quake 1. But it's probably cus I prefer the sci-fi environment.
I grew up with these games. I still prefer them over modern games. Modern games have lost all original ideas and they tend to just make games for money now. Or the CONSTANT remakes/remasters.
A remaster only makes sense for games older than 2000. Anything later than that doesn't look too bad. Unless you're a graphics whore, of course.
I play the hell out of this. Its about time they fixed it. :D
I was 4 when quake 2 came out, but playing classic FPS games on anything other than K&M is blasphemy lol.
7th grade me thought Quake 2 was the best game ever made. Children are missing out.
1:45 Space Marine?? FOR THE EMPEROOOOOOOR!!!!
I'm currently saving money to buy a rtx card so I can play Quake II RTX
TastySpleen is still running servers.
Q2 is a Great Game I also missed back in the Day cause of *Goldeneye&Turok2* 😁
Better late then NEVER
The multiplayer was amazing! My favorite was jailbreak! And yes I was a rail-god. Lololol… of course the grenade launcher was a lot of fun… boink…
One of the last great military shooters.
2:13 quake 2 has 39 levels...
Haha, ok ... i admit you got my attention with the title and thumbnail
When released in December 1997, Quake 2 was years ahead of any other shooter.
Shootout to the Splatterson 13 who got shot by a dead Enforcer!
Dude, don't get harsh on yourself for discovering it late.. I wish I was in your shoes, it's been ages haven't discovered a jewel. Even CP2077 failed my hopes. I guess last time I was awed by a game release was when New Vegas was out. Then I waited Skyrim for 11th November from start of the year, only to find out it's worse than Oblivion, but with better graphics.
I like both Quake 2 and Quake 4 but the fast-pace of Quake II is what makes it unique. Not to mention rocket jumps 🧨 (and the killer soundtracks)
*id Software got that musical epicness at DooM Ethernal too btw
It's funny how purists have kept shitting on Q2 while praising Q1.
I played the original Q2 in (late?) 1997 and i always prefer Q1 and Duke3D even at time. I think the real problem of Q2 was the original level the design, (very boring) because weapons and enemies was awesome.
play quake RTX,

1:30 "completely different story"... someone didn't play cotm...
Trespasser!
I was actually lowkey disappointed with the campaign when the game first came out, but holy shit the remaster expansion was amazing. That felt like what I'd wanted from Quake 2 the whole time
Is it quake 2 rtx?
I loved q1, hated q2. Loved half life
Apropo Half Life. This is the Engine that gave birth to the gold source engine!
I think Half life was branched off the Quake 1 version of the engine.
Crazy that the quake engine never really died.
@@Cha4k you are actually totally right! Quake & Quake 2 used the same engine.
@@GregorioStyrecoThat's not entirely true. Quake 2 was branched off the original Quake engine, but it does have a lot of differences internally. Daikatana infamously took forever to come out due to it being ported from the Q1 to Q2 engine (with John Romero being in disbelief at how much Carmack had changed things around).
Every Quake is great, but Quake on console, Quake played with a controller, is quite literally an abomination.
Thanks for the glowing review. I bought it on ps5 a couple weeks ago but haven't touched it yet. Now I'll be playing tonight!
Why is it an abomination? Because you don't have a controller?
Quake 2 on the PS1 supported the Playstation mouse, i bought one just to play it on PS1. Clapped so many of my friends with it

Gen Z review Quake 2 for the 1st time 😕
the original is better, the graphics are stronger..
Quake 2 is soulless and nowhere near the masterpiece Quake is.

Quake 64 was...horrible lol. Just skip it. It isn't Quake 2 at all.
In my opinion Quake 2 is boring. I finished Q2 Remastered on Nightmare level barely entertained.
Quake 1 was much better because it has better level design (Romero!) and music (NIN!)
