  • Ronnie Montrose was the guitarist and founding member of his bands Montrose and Gamma. He created some of the best sounding songs of early 70's hard rock. Along with Sammy Hagar, they teamed up to write songs for the Montrose debut album that are still considered timeless in hard rock & roll. He was a studio musician and producer.

    I was blessed to see Ronnie a few times. Hearing of his death made me so sad. I felt we lost a true American Rocker. Who didn't get enough credit.

    Ronnie was one of the best.I dont think he really got a lot of credit for what he accomplished in the 'Rock World.'Long live Montrose.

      Ronnie was his own worst enemy. If he had kept on the same path as the first two albums and kept Hagar he may have reached the heights he yearned for. His ego got in the way. That being said, the first Montrose album is one of my top three rock albums.

    I saw and heard Ronnie Montrose play with the Edgar Winter band in '72 or '73. Altho I came to see Edgar play his portable piano, I was also blown away by Ronnie's guitar work!!!

    Rd,
    Thank you!! I continue to learn from your work.
    I was fortunate to see Montrose live in the mid 70's. That tour was Nugent, Foghat and Montrose. Wow did they ROCK. I bought their first album and tried to wear it out. What an under rated master of the guitar. Still to this day as a man getting up years I have to crank up the volume. Great work. Boe 👍

    Great video! Thanks for making it.
    Ronnie Montrose influenced me immensely on guitar. I remember seeing him play on IN CONCERT ( I believe?), with the Edgar Winter Group.
    As time progressed I bought all the Montrose and Gamma albums. Eventually in the digital age I bought most of his solo albums on CD.
    Open Fire, Territory, Speed Of Sound, The Diva Station, Mutàntis Mutandis, Music From Here and Mr. Bones are all on different labels and sometimes difficult to obtain. They are timeless recordings!
    There was a side to his playing that was reminiscent of The Ventures and also a very skilled Jazz Rock style . He was also a fine acoustic player. A lot of people are unaware of his diversity as a guitarist.

    I was privileged to see the original Montrose lineup open for Humble Pie at the Old Hershey Park arena in Hershey Pennsylvania. One hell of a great concert! And then sometime later I believe Montrose opened for Robin Trower, with singer Bob James. That was also a killer concert. That one was at the Spectrum in Philadelphia.

    Back in the late 1970s my band, The Rich, performed the song “Starliner”. Since I was fronting the band on acoustic guitar and flute I rejoined the band on my Rickenbacker bass and we performed it with me playing fuzz bass, a regular bass, electric guitar and drums. I wrote another song so that we could keep the vibe going another four minutes. Since then, I’ve written three or four dozen songs for double harmonies bass players. (I had to edit this comment because instead of the word ‘drums,’ my spellcheck put ‘drugs.’)

    I read the Les Paul Ronnie used on 1st Montrose album was his absolute favorite. And was stolen at a gig. He had the serial numbers for it and later tracked down that guitarist Gary Moore had bought it from someone. Ronnie team sent all the proof of ownership to Moore but they ended up in legal battle over it. Then Ronnie died and later Gary Moore Moore passed away so don't know who has it now.

      @@RiverDocs actually you need big speaker cabinets, which were very common in the 70s and 1980s to re-create that live rock ‘n’ roll sound.

    • @derekclacton
      @derekclacton 3 місяці тому +1

      @@richarddelconnorSurprisingly, Ronnie used a 3x10 combo to record with. He wore the speakers out so fast he had to have two sets and alternate them - one set was always being repaired!
