According to Sohyang, her goal is to use her voice to comfort people who are going through difficult times.
Immortal Songs: Singing the Legend, also known as Immortal Songs 2, is a South Korean television music competition program presented by Shin Dong-yup. It is a revival of Immortal Songs, and each episode features singers who perform their reinterpreted versions of famous and sometime culturally important/impactful songs.

Love your analysis. She said that she put lots of celtic influence in this arrangement for obvious reasons. They almost canceled this show due to her pneumonia but she did not disappoint Shane and audience. Could you imagine singing like this with pain in your chest ? Absolutely crazy !

That’s a great topic! And it’s got huge scope for discussion too! A great many coaches work with singers without actually touching on technique/anatomy etc, and instead just try and get them “in the zone” and let instinct take over, I’d love to go through a few usual suspects and breakdown what the imagery is and what the anatomical effect is!
I have watched this performance so many times, but I am still amazed each time! Sohyang is a vocal beast!

That's what I like about So Hyang, she can take a song you hate and make you love it. I hear her voice in my head even when you don't have music playing. I love to hear her sing. She is the worlds best. She was recovering from pneumonia when she sang this song.

You said it. I never liked this song. It's corny and boring and done too many times... that is until I heard SoHyang's version.
This is not the same old You Raise Me Up. It's been transformed into a truly moving, inspiring masterpiece.
She's like a master chef. She could recreate any boring dish into something you never dreamed possible.
I have never seen this level of musical creativity and to perform it like that? She's divine...
Great reaction,glad to see a music pro gets as excited about her as us non musical people. It was so impressive,like you said,she blows your mind but if thats the case i'm not sure how you will react when I tell you that she was actually sick during this performance (I think anyone who has followed her for a while can probably notice that she looks very tired & she looks like she's lost weight facially too).
The doctor said she shouldn't sing as she hadn't yet recovered from pneumonia, but typical sohyang didn't want to disappoint the audience, so she went ahead & performed.
The thing that I cant get my head around is " what the hell would it have sounded like if she'd not been ill"????
You should check out her performances during the pandemic because it seems to be the general cencus that her voice is actually getting better as she gets older!!! & obviously,material done during the pandemic are bang up to date. Firstly,she released a music vid,which is a rarity in itself, a cover of 'never enough', which you must be sick of hearing,I know I am,its seems like every man,woman,child,dog & cat wants to sing it at the moment, but apart from the fab vocals,I think you'll enjoy the concept of the video,which contains 3X sohyang. Then there are her performances on a project called 'begin again korea' where a small group of 6/7 vocalists & musicians basically went to different places around korea doing very acoustic mini gigs to very small audiences (because of covoid19). It was the first 'new' sohyang stuff in a fair while,she not exactly known for flooding the market & my 1st experience of these performances was her performance of 'i will always love you' where she was sitting down,on the dockside of an industrial plant,it was windy & she sang 'if i' & that was it, full body goosebumps after only

In Immortal Song, most performers do a re-interpretation of the original song, or they sing their new song (As I Live by Kim Jin Ho, as I recall).

Just a little background on So Hyang and then a little more extensive biography of her with links to songs you should react to. Pretty please!!! And because I'm 62, and my great-grandmother was from Scotland, you have to do it! :P ... ;)
So Hyang is not quite 5' 4" tall and only about 100 pounds. I am left to wonder how God loves to throw someone like her in the mix from time to time! A teeny woman who roars like a lioness! She is without equal in my opinion.

We all wonder if So Hyang is human or from another planet. Current odds are that she’s from another planet or perhaps an angel come down from Heaven. We have never heard anyone sing like her, or be able to hold an audience in the palm of her hand until she lets them go. She does all the musical arrangements herself (with the input of her musical assistants), teaches vocal technique at a South Korean university and speaks four languages. Korean, English, French and Vietnamese.
Let me catch my breath. OK.
She is a cancer survivor from uterine cancer at the age of 20, just after getting married, and states very plainly that God saved her life due to the prayers of her church. But this left her without the ability to have children so she decided to dedicate her life to being a Contemporary Christian Gospel singer and has refused recording contracts from the biggest corporations in the world. She only wants to sing for charities, churches and while doing missionary work, to strengthen those suffering through difficult times. She also says her voice is “from God.” David Foster, Josh Groban, Michael Bolton and others have all travelled to Asia to work with her.
She contracted hepatitis B from a blood transfusion during her cancer surgery and it clings to her to this day. Because of this she is prone to catching pneumonia but has sang perfectly while suffering from it in her live performance of “You Raise Me Up” before Shane Filan of Westlife on South Korean TV: ua-cam.com/video/te_L9ofhUt8/v-deo.html She has asked those who love her singing to pray that God keep pneumonia away from her, she has suffered from it on so many occasions. Imagine how she must feel with this coronavirus floating around everywhere!
She just turned 42 on April 5, 2020, though in Korean culture she would be 43 because you are deemed to be one year old when you are born. She was about 37 when she sang this version of “Arirang Alone”, their unofficial national anthem based on a 600 year old folk song expressing their desire to reunify north and south: vimeo.com/308253527
After being sick with pneumonia much of the time from 2016 through to 2020, and considering giving up singing altogether, she decided to enter a televised singing contest called “King of the Masked Singers” in 2017 and won six consecutive times, which has catapulted her into international fame from the performances being posted on UA-cam.
Whitney Houston’s former manager saw her on UA-cam and showed her to Oprah Winfrey, who brought her to David Foster’s attention. Foster then contacted So Hyang and went to Japan in order to perform eight concerts together at the famous Tokyo Blue Note Club in late-2018. She could be an international Super Star if she wanted to be but has decided that it would ruin her spiritually, quoting Proverbs 14:12 “There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.”
In a South Korean television interview So Hyang conceded that she struggled with her desire for fame for a number of years, going into the basement in her home numerous times and closing the door so she could complain vehemently to God that He was holding her back from becoming famous due to her health problems and other unforeseeable events. Then a while later she saw a Korean TV drama where the talented daughter of a very successful businessman was positive she would take over when her father retired. But he left the management of the company to a woman she hated, so she had a fit and lay kicking and screaming on the floor. So as a consequence she does not pursue fame or fortune and actually has no social media presence whatsoever. What can one say about such a person? She is a literal Wonder Woman! And we need about a billion more just like her!

“Debuting in [the] US was my utmost goal for the past 20 years. But when I got a call from the US agency, I politely rejected, as I realized that what I wanted most was not becoming famous,” she said.
“I think singers are very susceptible to arrogance, especially when they hear the screaming from crowds on stage. It can make you feel like as if you’ve become God.”
“And I’m perfectly okay with sharing my music via UA-cam, which can reach tens of millions of people all over the world without making me feel stuck up. Maybe that’s why I was born in this era.”
So Hyang is just the most amazing singer, Christian and human being. She is beautiful both inside and out-and so humble!

Well, one more gush. In an interview with a Turkish music producer So Hyang revealed that she can hit Eb7 and D7 in practise. However, she never goes above the 6th octave in performances. Oh, I just remembered, she is also a published novelist and theological treatist, and a very good stage actress, which she proved by playing Julie Andrews’ part in the South Korean production of “The Sound of Music.” Moreover, she sang the “Moana” part in the Korean version of the Disney film, does the musical vocals for many South Korean television dramas, and is a talented artist and cartoonist.
She can also play the piano and guitar. Is there anything this genius level woman can’t do?
I really must also compliment the choir, orchestra and audio/video production people So Hyang uses. They are all top notch from what I can see and hear. The Korean people are easily as talented as anyone else!

So Sam, another great reaction. You should check out three very different performances from Sohyang. Lean On Me, Everyone, and her recent recording of I Will Always Love you. You get up beat and celebratory, epic, and emotional. And a word of warning. She 's getting better. Her control in a series of TV performances this summer on the show Begin Again Korea was breathtaking. The young regulars on the show were starstruck. You will be too.

In all honesty, I was not a particularly avid fan of the original "You Raise Me Up" when I first heard Sohyang sang this song, in spite of how much I love her song. The arrangement was just too plain to me at the time. Sohyang has completely destroyed my impression of this song and injected such vitality and dynamics in her 2018 rendition. As you said, mind-blowing. Also I have say that you have such a unique way of doing reactions. Your comments are so precise in describing the anatomical and scientific terms that it's like attending biology or physics classes :-) However, it's very entertaining to watch your expressive facial expression, as well as your struggle to find a suitable moment to pause the performance.

I’ve literally seen hundreds of reactions to this performance and by far yours is the best! Thank you. I feel you did justice to her unlike so many reactors out there just trying to get on her bandwagon for views. If there’s one song i’d like you to react, it’ll be “everyone” since i reckon any half decent singer would shudder at what a driven, talented, awe inspiring singer like Sohyang can and will do to bring comfort to people of need and despair.

In case you haven't heard... The day before she sang this, she had been released from the hospital after having pneumonia (her 4th) time that year). Her doctor told her not even to talk; however, she said that she had given her word that she'd perform and she wanted to keep her word. If you watch her closely during the performance, you can see her struggle a bit.
She had Pneumonia when she sang this song. You can look at her eyes and tell she was sick. Yet she gave a stellar performance. Love her.
If you actually observe her mouse closely, you'll find a large sprain in her tongue. I am heartbroken by her desperation.
Great Reaction Dude! And yes her background vocals are exceptional to match her phenomenal voice gift to share with and comfort all of us(of course, the musicians are awesome too!). Probably one of her world wide fans will also tell you she actually was sick during this wonderful performance. I love sohyang! I think you would also be amazed at *FROM HOME (REARRANGED VERSION) by NCT U* . NCT is a South Korean boy group consisting of members from all around the world. They have some of the best vocalists in the K-Pop industry along with their labelmates EXO! Their song From Home is a 90's R&B ballad sung in 4 languages! There is the original From Home MV, their live performance of the rearranged version at MAMA 2020, and the MV for the rearranged version which is the same audio from their live performance. The MVs are less likely to be copyrighted compared to their MAMA performance but the rearranged version MV is still live vocals. I highly recommend checking out both the original MV and the rearranged version MV! This song is very meaningful to the members and fans as they look back at their roots and their journey starting from their home to where & who they are today. I really hope you check them out! Their vocals are unbelievable! Thank you!

Sam, I just heard this on another comment. Apparently the background singers you love so much here are former students of Sohyang from the university in South Korea where she teaches vocal technique. Her best students, so to speak. They seem to show up wherever she goes so she may have them on the payroll as her personal, hand picked accompanists. 👌😎💘😉
I am sure someone has already mentioned this, butnjustvin case.... During this performance she had pneumonia. She was told by a Dr. that day... not to speak. But with... Weak lungs, and a bad throat, she was still able to do that. Not as high or belty as normal, but some on. I do not know of another singer who would risk their voice like that. She has all the faith in the world with God to help her through anything.

You are missing out on some serious Sohyang performances yet. Her "Lean on Me" actually makes this one seem kind of weak. She also has several completely soft songs now that will blow you away without even any belting. She has some fun ones from the masked singer that need heard too....Home, Mona Lisa, etc. It must suck to not be able to just go through them. I do and I still stumble onto new ones that are just like, what. She's the best.
