    Good one. I have found over the years is that you have to be comfortable when you tie flies if you start to hurt, it's because you are not comfortable, one of the reasons I like C-clap vises I can make adjustments to hight and I don't get sore in the upper back, for years my flying station was my father's old card table. I have been tying on it for over 50 years now, he liked to play bridge, and well I picked up the fly rod when I was 8 in 1963 and have yet to put it down. Dad didn't fish and it will be 53 years since he passed on later this year. The season is open for the all the inland waters of the state, our Governor signed an executive order for it back on March 24 a good three weeks early. Hang in there this will pass. It's nice that you are doing these videos for beginners- I was on my own when I started. That first decade was tough.

      Thanks George, an old friend and very famous tyer here in Norway had two knee pads hanging on thick elastic from the ceiling, one each side of his vice that he put his elbows in when tying. He looked like a puppet, be he said it helped him.

      @@Thefeatherbender Interesting, the comfort angle never gets talked about. It might be worth doing a video or two on the subject. I didn't have a good chair for a long time but I had a very good boat cushion, that same one I used when I started flying, I sat to low in the seat, I am a short fellow. Once I started doing that 90% of my problems in that Cherokee 140 was gone. Since then If my students, I still teach the skill has problems, I have them get a boat cushion, 85% of the time it works fine and they make good progress, the other 15 % are just wasting time and money. It's not a problem with Cessna Aircraft, just the Piper Single Engine Airplanes. No issue with helicopters, I fly those too. I am a real Jack of all trades or at least in my mind. I would love to come to Norway to fish for a month or two!

    It's good to mention that the left hand fly tiers has the opposite way of thread wrapping on the hook, meaning that if you want to correct the thread you should spin the bobbin clockwise.

    All good tips dude. Thank you for uploading these lessons. Me, I’m waiting for help with getting dubbing on the thread. I can do the loops and/or brushes but I need help when you just want it on the thread (and without using a load of soft wax).

      Good, its very important if you are just starting to tie that you don't run before you can walk! Take your time and master each basic technique. Another one coming tomorrow. You can also check out my new book. ua-cam.com/video/mVLof0uXqyE/v-deo.html Good luck!

    Barry thank you!!! I know you put this out as a tutorial but I want you to know this series you are doing is going to be added to my repertoire for teaching my Veterans to tie.
    Three of the most difficult things I teach are
    1 attaching thread and thread control
    2 dubbing.
    3 that damned whip finish. I say that because while it is easy or simple enough once you learn, just learning to use the tool, takes a bit. We use the Materelli style tool but I also have another that is something I used to use until I started with Materelli. Would you consider doing a tutorial, including by hand? I know it is simplistic but it isn't easy for new tyers to learn.
    I really do appreciate your series. I have been working with Vets since about 2007. With a one year break for my health.
    Take care of yourself Barry. Oh! A couple of things! I told you I received your envelope in a comment previously, I didn't think to check to make sure. I appreciated receiving it, I am going to buy everything you have in print if I can.
    I had stopped tying for a couple of years for one reason or another, but I have picked a half dozen flies from your channel and I am starting to tie again. Just finished 11/2 dozen of a very simple Caddis pattern, peacock body and Elk hair wing.
    I love Caddis! I fish them often.
    Thanks again Barry I appreciate you!!

      Thank you Kerry, and what a great job you are doing! I have just made the video with the whip-finish (Materelli) hand & half hitch tool so I'll put that one out on Monday. Good to know you are at the vice again.

    I'm really starting to wonder if the flies in the fishing shops are all hand made. I'm starting to think the answer is yes.

      @Thefeatherbender  3 роки тому

      There is no machine made yet for tying flies! So they are all hand made.
