Unlock the Power of Hybrid Mixing with ADAT
Today we’re learning how to get the best features of analog and digital gear in your mixing workflow.
Good news! You don’t need a massive studio, or even a super-expensive interface to start integrating hardware into your digital mixing setup.
We’ll look at how you can do this with the power of ADAT, even using a small interface like the Audient iD24.
I’ll walk you through what you need, signal flow, and how to route it through Cubase.
Let me know in the comments!

Now, I want to hear about your setup!
Do you have digital/analog hybrid workflow?
Is it something you’ve wanted to try?
Not interested at all?
Let me know :-)
I am a young(er) engineer who started learning this stuff less than 5 years ago, so there's a certain level of detachment I have with regards to the tactile feel and vintage sound of the hardware. There simply isn't a nostalgic element in my mind about those things. I think the benefits of hardware in tone and tactility are easily superseded in software. If I think of a future dream studio, I might have some hardware compressor/EQ but I would use it only while tracking to lock in a sound with the hardware effects. In the mixing stage, I'd like more choices personally and stick to software.
In fact, with regards to hardware units I might explore guitar pedals, or specific reverb/delay units to create a unique sound.
Just my two cents, as hardware gets more expensive compared to software I struggle to see its viability
I've been in this since Cubase 7 at a hobbyist level recording for myself and pro-bono for friends with no aspirations to expand this. The only analog gear I still use is the analog half of my Steinberg interface, mics guitars and a Helix. For mixing and mastering I do it all in the box. Unlike @Anshul Jain I'm an old guy, but I too lack the hardware nostalgia and agree with the rest of his assessments. I'm sure others could get better results mixing my stems but I do it for the enjoyment it gives me.
I have a couple of things I end up using in a hybrid mixing sort of method, one is a tube preamp I overdrive mainly to add some fuzz on vocals. I sometimes use some random guitar pedals. I have a long room that I mic up and use for a short Hall type reverb. I eventually will record those to some tracks instead of running them live so I can bring up the mix without having to set all that stuff up. Plus, the family doesn't really appreciate me blasting a snare drum into the family room while they are trying to watch tv.
Hwhat kind ad/da do you use in your setup ?
So hopefully you see this. I'm having issues connecting my UR816 to my UR824. I can get each individual unit separately to get a signal when I run them separately (if I use one unit by itself I can get the 8 channels). But when I connect them via ADAT, the DAW recognizes the ADAT ports but I get no signals from the slave unit (channels 1-8 get signal but the adat channels don't get signal). I've set one unit to internal and the other to ADAT. Have you done a video about connecting two units with ADAT? This is the only one I can find.
I've set each unit to 48hz. I'm just trying to get my extra preamp inputs working. Not routing to analog gear.
Hey Chris, haven't been here in a while and I use an x32 for an interface so this one doesn't really apply to me, but I wanted to say thanks a million for all the help in the last three years. It dawned on me that the reason I don't watch to many videos anymore is because I got to the point where I can use Cubase very effectively. That my friend is almost 100% because of you. Many thanks!🤘👊
I'm old. I saw ADAT and jumped in here thinking you had found some cool way to revive the Alesis ADAT machine and use it for mixing.
Hey Chris,
I hope you're doing well! I recently came across your channel and was truly impressed by your expertise. I have a bit of a unique situation - I own an older Steinberg MR816csx Firewire device that unfortunately isn't supported on newer Macs by Steinberg.
After some research, I'm considering using it in a light pipe slave mode to still make use of its inputs and outputs. I was wondering if you could possibly create a video tutorial explaining the process of setting up and utilizing the MR816csx in this alternative configuration.
Your knack for explaining complex concepts in a user-friendly manner would be a huge help for me and others who might be facing similar compatibility challenges. I believe your video could serve as a valuable resource for the community.
Looking forward to your videos as always!
Best regards,❤
Broke out of the box just recently actually! Using a focusrite 18i20, some compressors and a Creme RC as well - beautiful piece!
Thanks for the informative videos! Long time Cubase user as well!
Thanks, Chris for sharing. Yes, I do hybrid mixing. Love it! Cheers!
The sends and returns are a key feature on the iD24 and on its predecessor, the iD22, which is what I use. I record with an external preamp through one of the returns. Considering its quality and features the iD24 is a terrific value.
Exactly what i was looking for, thanks for such informative video👏🏼
That's great!
Until now I have used external hardware in a simple way only, by using pedals. For example, for our iD44 mixing challenge in MCC I processed the rhythmic guitar (the one that sounded as chord pulses) with the envelope filter option of the Robotalk. Simple, but it makes a lot of fun, I must tell you.
That's pretty cool Jorge :-)
Yes, this is a direction i would like to go. However I am using an SSL 12 audio interface with adat also. So from my understanding of your setup I have some of the gear that I need. Thank you for showing how to route all of this. Very well done video.
Hi Chris 😊
Thanks for all your vídeos and tips.
Do you think ID24 will works well with RME Fireface800 as an expanssion? Thank you.
Hi Chris and thank you for this new video!
I just acquired the Audient ID44 a few days ago,
I don't use external hardware, however I intend to use it with ADAT extensions, so your review caught my eye (again) ;).
Thanks again for all your valuable advice and tips.
From France, Denis.
Oh yean, I also have an iD44 and it's great! Tu vas aimer mon ami :-)
Big thanks for distinctive english!
As an Old schoolEx bbc engineer I’ve come through the changes in the studio world . I’m totally wrapped up in my analogue hardware . ITB has advanced and will continue to advance but hey the sheer beauty and feel of loving breathing racks of equipment is still breathtaking . ITB is a sterile experience compared to boxes of knobs and sliders . The new generation of engineers will probably be devoid of the experience of working on consoles and racks . The sound and results may well be getting close but the experience of hardware is supreme!
Only in your opinion. Personnaly I got the same experience ITB, hybrid or even fully analogue. Except that ITB is the fastest process. In fact, I configured my reaper templates to be as close as a analogue way of thinking but ITB. However, as a teacher, I found itore simple to explain routing with patch chord and physical I/O than only in a digital world.
@@cefahprod i'm 65 and instituionalised lmao, real gear and a console racked up is more tactile for me than a mouse and a display . you cant lick or taste a digital ice lolly!! The only thing i dont miss is tape those things were a pain .I still have one not used now . i'm guessing you're about 35 years younger than me. obviously if i was your age i'd be on your wavelenght. After years of working on hardware some things are hard to put down. Like you say opinions vary but so do eras im almost done man one year left im out. to a paradies island hopefully.
@@colinjaques9864 I understand your point of view and honestly, I hope I could spend more time with guys like you on a fully analog environment to learn a different way of thinking and approaching mixing and recording. In the end, the real truth is : "Does is it sound good and bring emotions to life". And in fact, I guess there is a bit of general truth in the gear feeling, otherwise companies would not build so many controllers for our ITB studio.
@@cefahprod You know back in the day we spent a lot of time just listening even now i have my screen to one side . progress i dont want to drive a steam engine but it would be fun lol but a ferrari is deffo the way to go . in 50 years will there be any musicians or will A1 have taken over. ?.
@@colinjaques9864 Guess the world will see and manage to get through progress. Apparently we managed to survive a lot of things.
Allô à toi depuis Taipei! Here we use a pci424 connected to an HD192 and a 2408MK3 for outboard TC effects and dbx compressors.
awesome content chris. i recently got some wes audio gear and a sp8 to go with my id44. man i pulled my hair out for 2 weeks lol. it seemed really easy till i got into trying to use it. and as a side note this may the last puch to go from pro tools to studio one as of course pro tools has no auto delay for hardware. where as everyone else does lol
I only mix in the DAW, only rarely do I adjust the sound directly, but then I have a DI signal or a copy of the signal on another split channel. So I always have an unprocessed signal in the computer.
I am of the opinion that early sound decisions can sometimes be made unfavorably and then I prefer to work with a double bottom, with an unedited copy.
Greetings and help me please Chris, and i hope really you can help me
Good video...
I have a question that is a bit out of context.
When connecting a preamp to the Audient sound card, the gain of the Audient must be set to zero and control gain and out from the preamp??? Or should the gain of the Audient be in half and give less gain to the preamp??? Please explain to me, teacher, enlighten me... Thanks in advance, I hope you can help me please. Blessings.
Hey Chris. Love the set up.
I am also a cubase hybrid mixing guy.
I use a lynx aurora 8 with the tb2 card as my interface .
I’m finding that 8 channels isn’t enough anymore tho as my external gear collection has grown a lot over the years and it’s really tedious to patch everything constantly .
I have a vintech 273 I use often on my stereo buss for color and broad eq, I use a Wes audio Dione as my primary buss compressor, and then I have a focusrite liquid channel, a pair of neve 551 eqs, a Cl1B, and some other pieces I occasionally use .
The big issue is that I monitor and sum through a dangers d -box.
So I have to be sneaky and crafty about how I patch between mixing and then ultimately when sending my audio out as 3 stereo stembusses and 2 mono busses through my 2 buss processors and then printing back in.
I can’t really afford the new aurora N 16 channels currently so I’m looking for a used 16 to replace my 8 with but maybe it’s easier to just use an interface and use the light pipe card with the lynx .
I'm in the same boat lynx aurora with only 8 in 8 out, after resaerching I think I'm going to get the Audient Evo 16 & pair it with an Audient SP8. The Lynx stuff is just too exspensive to upgrade to 16in/out
@@hammerfall66rulz tell me about it .
The new line is so damn pricey.
The other idea I’m playing with is going with a flock patchbay with the automatic routing . This isn’t a forever solution, but since I’m not tracking full on bands these days I feel like this would solve the biggest issue of the time spent patching and repatching when switching to summing / printing through 2 buss mode after having using gear as inserts .
With the auto patchbay I could still just use my ins on the aurora in two different modes and it would keep me from having to go a 16 channel converter.
is it possible to do the same thing with Evo 16
Outboard hardware is nice, but it would be great if Cubase offered rendering a track in real time with outboard gear running thru it. Like some engineers, we can only afford a few outboard modules. This would free up outboard modules to use on other tracks or mix buss. You couild always export the track in real time with outboard effects and then import it back into project, but that takes up a lot of time.
Good question, I will make a video soon on my Cubase workflow when mixing with hardware.
You can do that with the external effects panel in Cubase!
external Fx connection is the best feature for having hardware. easy to bounce music offline and not real time
Thanks for this valuable piece of information. How will you rate the AD/DA converters of the Audient ID24 compared the the Lynx Aurora
Does routing analog gear through a mixing board with stereo out into an interface work the same way?
The Aurora 16 is perfect to use with analog hardware because it doesn't have preamps, just pure converters. The audient EVO not so much as to my understanding you cannot really bypass the preamp circuits on the inputs. It will work, you can pad down the signal, but yet not ideal.
Does the Lynx Aurora need to ADAT card to do this?
Yes it does
I love to use outboard hardware gear, however, my experience has been mixed. When it's worked, it's super. I have some older gear -Focusrite (LS56) interface, and ART MPA and VLA unit, DBX 166 Comp, and PreSonis Preamp Gear from early 2000's (all in good condition).. But for some reason, I seem to have a lot of issues getting it all to work. No idea if it's cables, input or outputs, or what. I've spent several days at various times playing with all the setups, only to get some of it to work, and other pieces not so much. I would love to get this working all the time but currently it seems to be a mixed bag for me. But, when it works, it's really magic.
Thanks for sharing your experience with this. There's always things to experiment with to make the process better
Hi Chris,
Does your Lynx have ADAT? The one I have doesn't unforunatley. I'm looking at picking up the Audient Evo 16/SP8 combo.
I use cubase with rme and I have some analog equipment so I chose behringer adat 8200 as an extension the converters are surprisingly exemplary no problem for two years. the preamps are bad but the adat part is nickel (for me) I always calibrate my analog equipment to 0db vu and you? Merci Chris !
Nice setup, Daniel! I do have my Lynx converters calibrated
hi selim..nice Video..yes iam interest..but my question are you not use DAWTRHU to connect your Hardware? are it Fine ..thks
My hardware is connected via the Digital Outputs, those are set to DAWTHRU. Glad you enjoyed the video :-)
✌🏾
Hi I have a question, My interface does not have a WorldClock In or Out. Will I be able to connect a convertor thorugh Adat and match the BitRate on both the master and Slave. Will I get any pops and clicks?
Yes, in this case, your interface, and converters can also use ADAT as a clock source
@@mixdownonline thanks for the reply, another thing. I want a separate AD convertor in future. Maybe dangerous Ad+. Would I be able to connect it via Spdif without any issues?
"The cheaper option would be to pair it with your old Steinberg FireWire cards or to buy the Behringer UMC1820. 😅
can you go parallel in this way??
Definately, just insert the External FX on a FX Channel or Group Channel and route the Send signal to this channel, like you do with a Reverb for example
@@mixdownonline yeah, it might be a game changer for me. Thank you!!
i still believe that hardware sounds some level higher than software 😂
Lol! But seriously, plugins and hardware sound different, not necessarily better or worse IMO :-)
