- I was inspired to learn this song from the 2nd SC String Band's Version.
According to Wikipedia, ""Hard Tack, Come Again No More" is an American Civil War-era parody of the song "Hard Times, Come Again No More." First called "Hard Crackers, Come Again No More!", it is a sarcastic complaint about the quality of some of the provisions provided by military contractors, specifically hardtack.[2] The authors of the many verses of the parody are unknown, although the first version is often attributed to Josiah Fowler of the First Iowa Infantry dating to just after the Battle of Boonville, June 1861.[3]"
I like both songs (Hard Times and Hard Tack), but this version might be my favorite.
I'm in a low tuning here, from 5th to 1st string (Ab F Db Ab Db). I'm playing a Don Gardner Minstrel Banjo with Nylon strings. These are the original strings I got the banjo with, so I'm not sure what brand they are, although they might be Aquila.
