This version of the Ashtavakra Gita was updated from a public domain source. The original Sanskrit text was translated by John Richards, who placed his translation in the public domain in 1994. We have made a number of updates and corrections to the original text without changing the meaning of the source content, which can be found at WikiSource. Updates are detailed in the Introduction, starting at 00:51.
All music was composed and played by Davrus, the creator of this Meditative Instruments UA-cam channel. The flute you hear in this video is a replica of an ancient Pueblo Indian flute (aka Anasazi) discovered in a cave in the 1930's and carbon-dated between 599-769 CE. Mine is a 6-hole rim-blown wooden instrument, about 30 inches long, constructed by Craig Paterson @TempleWindFlutes. It is very challenging instrument to learn and produces an unusual musical scale, roughly equivalent to the 8-tone Spanish/Jewish scale, or Phyrigian Dominant. To create the musical chapter interludes, I recorded 22 original improvisations, each about two minutes long, and then trimmed each one down to about 50 seconds for the video. Recorded with a RODE NT1 microphone, MOTU 828 audio interface, and the Reaper DAW.
Narration was recorded with the same RODE NT1 mic, a Zoom H6 field recorder, and post-processed in the Reaper DAW.
The videos used for each chapter interlude were sourced from Pixabay, a community of creatives sharing royalty-free images, videos, audio and other media. All content is released by Pixabay under the Content License, which makes it safe to use without asking for permission or giving credit to the artist - even for certain commercial purposes. Finally, I'd like to give a big thanks to Keith Harancher of @kmhrecordingstudio5900 who lent me his invaluable experience as an audio & video engineer. This is my first video, and Keith helped me understand the technical stuff, for which I'm extremely grateful.

When this is found,
This is OM,
Pure consciousness,
Ever now,
The Sea of Brahman,
Within OM.
I'm glad to have found this. It is a very beautiful and peaceful view. I am currently translating the Ashtavakra into Dutch using four different word-for-word translations to get as close as possible to the deeper meaning of this teaching. Although a number of translations differ considerably, many translators have understood it well. But the question remains whether everyone has achieved it themselves. There are many good commentaries by some translators (especially those with Ramana's commentary), but for reflection a good translation without commentary is very valuable. i like this representation of the Ashtavakra Samhita (or Gita).
Thank you for this feedback. It was an interesting challenge to address this work and, like you, I used multiple source translations. Am currently working on the Avadhuta Gita and Vivekachudamani, and all share the same initial challenge. Namely, different translations often use surprisingly different phrases to describe the same concept. I find it necessary to compare multiple versions in order to "re-write" each verse in a way that provides the most clarity for modern readers while remaining true to the author's intent.
Edit: This issue would be most directly addressed by learning Sanskrit and reading the source material directly. This is something I have considered and may pursue in due course.
To your question of whether or not everyone has achieved it for themselves, I suspect very, very few do (though a blessed MANY are on the path). Academic comprehension of the verses and their lessons is the easy part. Letting go of judgement, living a life of blissful non-attachment, discovering the True Self: this requires faith, dedication, and perhaps most importantly, submission of the Ego, something very, very few people are able or willing to let go of. 😁🙏
Great hindu philosophies like ashtavakra Gita, bagavat Gita, udhava Gita, srimat bhagavatham, these are all still relevant in this modern era, these are all timeless, no bouderies like religions, it will relevant after 2000years also. These are all saying one thing you are neither body, 5 senses, nor mind you are a part of pure contiousnes which called god. God is not outside but you are the god. It's called Tatwamasi.. Means what you are searching outside, it's already inside you.
Yes. You are already what you seek. 🙏
I'm familiar with all that you mentioned and Ribhu Gita and Swami Vivikananda.
They say they hid salvation the one place you never look. Inside yourself.
Conditioned is nature,
Unconditioned is the Self,
Nature is actually selfless,
Dwelling in the Self,
This within pure consciousness its
SELF.
This is one of the best if not the Best representation of the Ashtavakhra Gita. Deserves an award! Thank you ❤❤❤
Thank you so much 😀
Thank you; this presentation is extremely well done: the full-screen display of the verbiage, the incredibly beautiful photography, and the lovely music. I am thankful to be a Premium UA-cam subscriber so I could enjoy the presentation without ads.
Thank you very much for the feedback! 🙏I do love this book and wanted to make a clear and accessible version of it. I've got a lot of projects ongoing, but I would like to do a version of the Bhagavad Gita & Avadhuta Gita relatively soon.
Thank you. Wonderful video. Translation is very good. Thank you 😊
Thank you for the feedback!😊
Video very clear with appropriate pauses to focus and assimilate what is intended to deliver . Great work.
Excellent translation/narration - great work! Thank you 🎉
This magnificent work is done so nicely by you, Sir! Boundless appreciation!
Thank you very much! I am in the process of beginning the next audiobook, which is likely to be either the Avadhuta Gita or Tao Te Ching, depending on how my research goes.
This is great, thank you!! A lot of work went into this
❤❤❤
❤️
Janaka had a horrible dream n thought n felt d pain, he woke up to his royal bed...so he asked a question?
Was this true or was that true?
No one could answer but Astha vakra....
Asthavakra was deformed in 8 places hence Astha (8) turns
The word ‘Bark’ is not a misspelling the word Bark actually means ‘Boat’. And is the phrase used in more ancient times.
You are right!!! I completely overlooked the word "barque" which was an old sailing vessel! When I made the edit, I cross-referenced other translations of the gita, which all used the word "boat," and I think it's a good change, since most people don't know that bark=boat. Still... oops! Live and learn 😁
@@MeditativeInstruments thanks for replying. Sorry my previous message was short i had just boarded a flight. On that note i downloaded your video and listened to it during the flight and loved it. Agreed not many people would Know what a bark or barque is, so the use of boat is better. I only knew from my deep interest in ancient Egypt. Keep up the great work. Subbed 👍
Love your Version! Is it available as pdf or docx for printing? Thanks 🙏🤍☀
Not currently, but I'm working on a solution to that. I should have a web-published edition available fairly soon (next couple months) that will be available for free.
@@MeditativeInstruments Great! Looking forward 🙏
Janak was Sita’s father so hard is it to date this
It's a very difficult book to date. I've seen several theories, ranging from 600bce to 1300ce, and I'm not certain any of them are correct. I trend toward the opinion it was written by an anonymous master who used Ashtavakra as a nom de plume, but ultimately feel it doesn't matter too much. The content stands on its own, no matter who wrote it.
The word "person", does not correspond with non duality.
You're thinking too far into it lol
The relentless assault of add interruption takes away from this study
I cannot disagree. This is not presently a monetized channel for me, but apparently YT still runs ads on my content. I actually didn't know this and appreciate being made aware. Not much I can do about it, but I have been considering breaking the book up into shorter videos and combine them into a playlist. Not sure if this would lessen ads, but it should make relevant content easier to get to for someone studying the book.
@@MeditativeInstruments Don't worry, be happy. ;)
Sometimes it is best to download it, turn off the wifi, and enjoy in peace.

Does the literally endless spiritual discussions, theologies, conflicts, disagreements, beliefs, philosophies, videos, books, ideas, comparisons, etc, etc, etc, and the endless other etc's. ever bring about common understanding/acceptance/clarity/understanding to "it's this way, not that way, or neither of those ways but perhaps one of the millions of other ways?
Any and all attempts to explain/communicate in any conceivable way, shape, or format what absolutely cannot be known....let alone placed in words = endless futility.
You cannot know what cannot be known.
Be the best person you can be....and hope all will fall in place one way or another.
My Best To All.
One of the underlying principles communicated by the Ashtavakra Gita is that everything is already the way it is supposed to be, that there is nothing to do, nothing to know, no "ultimate knowledge" to be acquired that tells one "it's this way, or that way." If anything, it suggests to the reader to stop wasting time trying to find "the correct answers" and simply enjoy each present moment, arguably the only "time" that can be objectively shown to exist at all.
To truly ‘Know’ anything it must be directly experienced. This rings even more true in regards to the ineffable, which is beyond the mind, beyond all intellect and rational thought.
Anyone can experience the infinite infinitude of Ultimate Reality , the Absolute Truth of unfathomable Love beyond conception. This is the infinite mystery unto which even GOD stands in awe.
5-MeO-DMT is the most effective & efficient method to elicit such an experience. 5-10 consecutive days in absolute darkness is the next most effective method to experience the totality of all that truly is, forever expanding into eternity✨♾️😉
♾️🙏🏼💖
We know that it cannot be known because there is no one home… to know…..yet the mind moves and needs food… and this satiates the hunger for a while…..
Well Said…. No there can never be total understanding much less agreement in Duality….yet each individual mind is at a different level of need and understanding. Most can’t comprehend such texts. Yes it seems like endless futility and one has to go through searching what cannot be found, comprehended by the mind. A word here, a phrase there brings a ray of light and even that ray sustains the heart…..
Bark is a type of boat 😅
Very true. Scale matters. If you're a small enough creature, bark's a whole cruiseliner 🤣
Rare word in English this may be, but it exists in other languages such as Russian: баркас.
