  • Time and time again, Lincoln is touted by his most well-known monikers,
"The Great Emancipator" or "Savior of the Union." His entire presidential legacy is often summarized in an easy one liner: “Lincoln freed the slaves.” But for decades historians have argued for the agency of Black Americans in securing their own liberation during the Civil War. Kellie Carter Jackson, an Associate Professor in the Department of Africana Studies at Wellesley College, explains.

Without President Lincoln, the constitutional amendment ending slavery would not have been ratified to the constitution at that time in history. Lincoln’s actions made the end of slavery the law of the land. The law freed the slaves.

Oh please. There’s a distinction between legal slavery and people walking away. As long as it was legal, no one “freed themselves.”

True, Lincoln did not free the slaves, he played a huge role. Without the civil war (which
he presided over and whose election was a catalyst for the civil war as slave states, particularly South Carolina, feared he would have threatened the institution of slavery), the 13th amendment would not have happened (or at least not as soon as it did). And the 13th amendment is what freed the slaves. Which was ratified by congress (without need of the president's support) thus freeing the slaves. This was the culmination of a movement over 100 years in the making brought about by white AND black abolitionists.

Nearly 200 years before slavery was abolished in the US, Black freedom-seekers journeyed south instead of north to a place that promised freedom.
In October 1687, a dugout canoe arrived at the shores of St Augustine, then a settlement in Spanish Florida and now the oldest continuously occupied city in the mainland US. The canoe carried eight men and two women, one of whom was holding a toddler in her arms. The travellers were Black fugitives who had escaped enslavement by British plantation owners in the Carolinas to the north. After disembarking from their vessel, they headed to the town centre in search of freedom "They went to present themselves to the governor of St Augustine," said Jane Landers, a professor of history at Vanderbilt University and a director of Slave Societies Digital Archive, which documents the history of enslaved Africans and their descendants. "They explained that they are asking for his protection, and that they wanted to become Catholics."

So a war started over slavery that allowed the slaves to escape... sounds like Lincoln going to war over slavery is what gave the slaves the opportunity to escape. Well done Abe.

The South ,s economy was greatly based on slave labour, Lincoln needed a reason to go to war with the South and ending slavery was it. The South was, more and more ,talking about separating from the North and forming their own country, Lincoln squashed that by forcing them into a war, thereby preserving the Union, slaves being freed was merely a sideaffect.

Your statement is an over simplification. President Lincoln’s stance on slavery in the US evolved over his lifetime, over his years in office. He never questioned whether it was morally correct, he knew it wasn’t. It is insulting to claim he pursued abolition out of desperation.

So true my sister, i often think of those 3 brothers who set it off. In the early months of the civil war the north was losing the war, and there 3 brothers on a Virginia plantation and one of them made a decision. Walk with me a minute, this brother was setting by a lake, thinking, the other 2 walked up and asked if he was ok, he looked at them and said, the south is winning this war, and if we don't help the north no telling how long we will be slaves. One of the other slaves asked him, what are we to do. He replied, leave here and go win this war for them and ourselves, the 3rd brother replied, you crazy, as the first brother got up and ran towards the water with the second brother a step behind, the third brother looked for a moment then turned and saw his brothers in the wind, yelled out, hold up you need me to show you how to do this. They crossed the river to Fort Monroe, and turn themselves over to General Bulter, at that time you had to return runaway slaves to their owners, but after General Bulter question them he told them that they that they didn't have to go back, when the owner can to get them, Bulter said no. The next day Bulter went to Congress and convinced them write a law, making them contraband of war, as the word got around, other slaves begin to run away, a black troop was started and the north begin to win. When Lincoln had completed the first draft of his speech, his secretary told him to hold up until the white troops had scored a victory, if not it would appear as if the north is stretching it's hands to Ethiopia and not the other way around. As Bob Malady said, "None but ourselves can free ourselves", and we have won every war for them for then until now, and today the so called Jews are upset because we refuse to stand with these so called Jews in Iasrel in their act of genocide against another people, as we foolishly help them destroy the Native Americans, which I do regret. please brothers and sisters, do your research, be mindful we suffer from the lack of knowledge, the knowledge of pass events. RESEARCH RESEARCH RESEARCH RESEARCH RESEARCH RESEARCH, MAN KNOW THYSELF, AND KNOW OTHERS.
