As a member of this band and the one that won the Texas 5A State Marching Championship in '83 when we were told we could never achieve this because we would only fail, I am so proud to say as the Bands of America mantra was then, "If it's to be.. It's up to me". Laredo, yes you can! Let everyone know that after we put Laredo on the national map and kicked butt, so can you! So to all of Laredo's band members, aim high, as high as you can. You can get it done! From the 1st 5A Sweepstakes band Senior Trumpet Leader Jesus "Chuy" Santillano, yes you can! Don't ever let anyone tell you, you can't do it. We did it and so can you! Come on guys, put Laredo back on the map! If you want it, take it! Best of luck!
htownjesse so then this is the video when you all won state??? This show is amazing!!! I was in band and graduated back in 1997. I always thought the year Nixon won state was 1985.
@@loonabestkpopgroup7376 , no, this is the summer before. We won State the following Fall. In 84-85 my sr year is the 1st yr we made Sweepstakes in 5A, the 1st for any Laredo band. We accomplished a lot of firsts and only's during my 4 yrs at Nixon. Glad to hear you also are part of the legend that is the Nixon band program. Hope to be at some of the competitions if they hold them this coming school yr.
I don't get tired or watching it! Even though I as part of La Banda Del Animo, I grew up enjoying the Million Dollar Sound of Nixon High. Wish LISD still had a strong music program in both schools but every year, students lack interest or don't have the push of their parents to continue in music. There is a lot of talent in our Laredo schools that don't get to show their passion and interest in music if they don't have the support.Oh well, Awesome show!!
Just wanted to say thank you for this video. I had 2 brothers and 1 sister in this band. Fernando, Tony, and Elva and if you know them you know me. I was the little brat around them back then. Anyway, thanks to this video, I showed my daughter band director this video and they finally went to their first ever Bands of America competition in 2022. They did their best and I am very proud of them for trying. Two parents from Laredo in this Melissa Band, one from Nixon and one from United. Once again Thank You all.
I think that band was robbed from their #1 ranking in the nation, much less the #1 ranking in the State of Texas. Awesome pure sound of power!!! Power through and through... wow. Great performance.
always a thrill to see this video and remember my most awesome years of my life; my High School years in the best high school in Texas J.W Nixon H.S. (Mustang Band) Belinda Ramon & Rick Ortegon the best friends at all levels of High School.
Freakin' awesome! Marching Bands of America is now Bands of America and I guess this is the grand nationals. It sounds like you guys brought down the house! Sound was amazing! Those trumpets were screaming! Enjoyed the video!
The trumpet soloist is none other than Jerry De La Rosa. He went on to be the producer and majority song writer for Tejano Music Star, Jay Perez, of San Antonio, Texas. Unfortunately, Jerry passed away at a young age from complications attributed to Diabetes. May You Rest In Peace My Brother in Christ. It was an HONOR performing with you as a member of the drum section during local, regional, state and of course, Nationals Competition witnessed above at Whitewater, Wisconsin.
9:20 he grow up to being my 8th grade science teacher. Intresting I knew him as a science teacher and coach then find out late in 8th grade he played trombone like me.
As a former Banda del Animo at Martin High School - during 78,79 and graduating class as a Junior - 1980 - we also had the chances for a state ranking, but it wasn't meant to be. Our performances were good and very technical - but the judges at the time were transitioning in a different marching style that we missed the boat. We had a band with over 300 members and alternates - had performed in the Band of Americas -placing 4th in the Nation, State- missing it by 1 point for the top 3- instead 4th, Mexico's Unam auditorium, several Dallas Cowboy's games and many parades. We were very well traveled - thanks to my parents that took a strong presence in the raising of funds for our trips. The band brings you into the life of performances, discipline, and strong team effort. Parents should allow their kids follow the path of the band - because it instills character and good experiences they will carry with them forever. I really hope people realize the hard work every kid in the band goes through with many hours of practice in playing music and marching for shows in halftime or competition. Today, I love to see these videos and notice the talent being presented at the times. Congratulations to these Band members and Directors - that took a vision and made the best possible outcome for their school and our city.
No props or anything. Just impecable marching and incredible music. Nowadays it’s all about a broadway style show. Sad how it’s become. I get it, people want innovation, but some bands have taken it a bit far. I mean it looks nice nowadays, but there’s tons of bands who don’t have the money nor resources for all those fancy stages and props.
OK, UA-cam was finally kind enough to give me the bandwidth to hear the video witout stoping. Wow, that sound was awesome. MIllion dollar sound indeed.
Back when marching bands entertained everyone and played with guts. I applaud what the kids do today, but the whole activity has moved away from entertaining the masses. I’m thankful I got to participate in the activity in the 80s and early 90s.
My sophomore year at nixon in 2006 we sort of recreated what the color guard did in time 6:48-7:22 b ut a little bit different...and this time the whole band lined up in two lines on either sides of the 5oyd line..with the guard in the front..we then tossed the flags over the band to each other..it was awesome..my partner was hopie..and i threw her the flag a little off..oops haha
Wow! Being an AHS Alumni 09, after watching this video makes me wonder where did this band go! This was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING ! I wonder if he can use this show again? This would be a GREAT contender for UIL!
if u want to watch the viseo i was talking about go to.. J.W. Nixon Band 2006 - Area ...skip to 8:10-8:32 to see the not so perfected recreation of the toss..in this case we toss it over the band..how awesome!
Yes Dovalina! I was going to tell you the same thing that Mr. 007 says about tagging. If you don't know what we are talking about, call me and I can help you out with this. It's easy (for helping promote the video). Orale! ...te bañas... ;-)
@kallel007 oh lol i didn't know. It's because when I was at Nixon some seniors mentioned it was the first time that it would be recreated since then, but I didn't know that. Now I don't feel so special for doing so. jk
@viola23dlt Since ive been watching NIxon, they've done that at least 7 times. Back in the 90's I saw several times, and at least 3 times in the 2000's.
@medkid99 yep Nixon isn't what it used to be anymore, it's not even what it used to be four years ago. jk I guess its because they aren't trying as hard and they don't want it that bad (to be the best again like in the past and to compete in state like they used to). Every good thing has its downfall....or end. we need more talent in laredo!

I'm so glad someone posted videos from Nixon's past. The band has almost NO videos uploaded. Way to represent.
Freakin' awesome! Marching Bands of America is now Bands of America and I guess this is the grand nationals.

Great Job Dovalina! You did an awesome job! You don't know how many people will be so touched by this video. We love you amigo... xoxoxox
I remember freshman training and having these guys as our trainers. They were hard on us but it paid off. Great video!

G. Montemayor As a trumpet player, Jerry De La Rosa was a trumpet player I looked up to, I was a part of the 1988 Mustang Band, RIP Mr. De La Rosa.
BRAVO!! Pure power and performance ...
when your band director was one of the trumpet players doing the duet #Spillane

What year was the big tuba pile-up at state marching contest? Anyone have that video? Classic and they were still awesome back then.
Gotta love those Uniforms. at the time, UHS, NHS, and MHS had similar uniforms.
