  • In this video I examine the issues that come up mostly with beginner to intermediate flute players with the right hand position as well as the 4th and 5th fingers. At the end I give you an exercise that takes 2 minutes a day which can be really helpful if you practice it mindfully and take into consideration the things I point out in this video.

Thanks for your reply. I do have long fingers but a rather inflexible thumb. I did buy the one for the left hand too but that didn't help at all.

Pleasure! Yes the left hand ports are less useful. Left hand needs to act like a platform for the flute-it’s the main balancing point l. Everything else secondary. The key is enough wrist bend-but not too much.

Excellent exercise, thanks very much.Spent about 30 minutes on this and it has really helped my coordination. I am a fairly new very keen 70 year old player. I have been using the Thumbport for the right hand. Do you think that's a good idea or would it be best to play without it?

Oh great! So pleased it has helped. So, with the thumb port-it really depends on the length of your fingers and whether your joints tend to be double jointed (eg the thumb bends way back naturally). I’ve only had one student who seemed to find it really useful and left it on as a permanent fixture. He had long fingers and was double jointed. If you have smallish hands, I don’t think the thumb port is all that useful. But, there is no harm with you using it so long as you feel you’re moving forward. 😊
