CHICAGO '96 B'way Opening Night

- A TV celebration of the very happy opening night of the 1996 Broadway revival of "Chicago," with everyone from Gwen and Chita to Rosie and Donald Trump showing up. Trump quite enjoyed this musical about corruption.
I remember seeing the original in 1975 with Verdon and Rivera and loving it. Then I saw it again in 1996 with Ranking and Neuwirth and was blown away. My date that night asked me why tears were running own my cheeks. I remember answering that it didn't get better than this.
Gwen was just beaming. How glorious to see her attend the opening night and be happy to be there. There is always something so delicate and warm about her.
And how cathartic to have Reinking play Roxie twenty years later and playing it at nearly the same age Gwen was the first time around. And just knowing the history that these two women had with Fosse.
This is lovely footage! Thanks :)
Thanks---great comment.
Oh Wow - can Ann Reinking be anymore fabulous, humble, acutely technical with her stylized choreography of this show. It was such an experience to go see this show. I saw both Fosse, and Chicago.
If you are lucky to work with Ann she is always humble, encouraging and extremely funny
That CGI E! opening really brought me back.....hahah Oh, the 90's.
Yes, a blast from the past.
Steve Kmetko -- Great Interviews!! And Chicago is still running!
Glad you liked it. The folks you see here could not have known that the show would still be playing 23 years later.
How fun to see little tibdits, like showing them while they posed and performed for those classic promo shots.
I agree---that original ad campaign certainly paid off.
Oh this clip brings back amazing memories!
I had just really gotten into musical theater and devoured anything musical I could get my hands on and found this on E! one night!
You are, as always, a theatrical treasure Spiderwoman and I am loving this trip down memory lane...btw, the Trump comment was both hysterical and timely!
So very glad that this brought back memories of watching it back then. I believe that I had not watched this since the night it aired.
I need more Ann Rineking to watch! How come there isn't more of her work available?
It's really interesting seeing interviewers fit in among a red carpet premiere instead of now how it seems everything is fitted around the interviews.
Another treasure that you have shared with the world. Thank you so much!
A nice thing to say, I appreciate it.
Thank you so much for this footage and all the other you make available.
You are welcome---glad you are enjoying.
I love the long discussion of corruption of justice and then CUT TO : Donald Trump. LOL. Perfection
Razzle Dazzle "em . That's him.
I didn't know Donald Trump was into musical lol, I suppose he sees himself in this.
Love it😂😅
Ann is lovely
Aurora, Thank you!
24:50 Gwen Verdon
This is when E was actually covering the entertainment world.
When you're losing your hair it's best to keep it rather short. Growing it out and combing it over into a disheveled mess just makes you look more bald. 5:04
No true isolation! A Chinese whisper of the phenomenal choreography of Bob Fosse.
Still a good effort x
I love Bebe Neuwirth, Ann Reinking, Joel Grey, Jennifer Grey, Marcia Lewis, Bernadette Peters, Leigh Zimmerman, David Sabella, (David Sabella-Mills) James Naughton, Roy Scheider, Bruce Anthony Davis, Ben Vereen, Gwen Verdon, Joanne Woodward, Phyllis Diller, Rosie O’Donnell, Tommy Tune, Chita Rivera, Chet Walker, and Richard Kind.
I enjoyed pretty much everything, with the exception of the person Steve Kmetko interviewed at 4:50 or so.
How ironic to see the current president of the USA giving a review, 20 plus years ago, on a musical about getting away with vicious crimes and coming out the other end a star! Was he there taking notes for his future? Beyond the fact that I am sure he was lasciviously watching the dancers who are half dressed in this production, which I saw in the 90's as a teenager and pleasuring himself, I am sure, imagining himself amidst the dancers, when he got home to one of his wives or whomever it was in the late 90's....Yes, I am sure he was picking up tips about how to break laws and still come out a star, in the end. How depressing, though, to see him in this video. I almost jumped out of my seat! See enough of him every day without CHOOSING to see him on UA-cam reviewing a musical! Otherwise, wonderful, as was the show!
no way the donald
When trump showed up I gasped
Ohhhhh, Thank You for posting this!!!!!
Mr Donald trump...... From the UK.. He was never a 'big celebrity'... Now when I see old clips I notice him in everything and it's just weird now.
But apart from that I LOVED THIS CLIP
First time seeing Steve Kmetko and he's cute 🙈
25:33 JoAnn Woodward, Phyllis Diller, Rosie O'Donnell
Tom Hulce in the background??
Yes!
"just a high kick away from Broadway" hehe
Trump- Figures he'd be at a musical about criminals, i'm sure he can relate.
I love Steve Kmetko.
Man, I go to UA-cam to seek relief from Trump via escapist musicals and damn it! Camera hog that he is. His soul is empty, so giving his opinions to the masses makes him feel less empty and loved.
40:21 How about over 26 years 🤩
Why Donald Trump, one might ask? No? You're right. Perfect!
Ironic that there's an interview with Trump "Mister Corruption" commenting on the show!
19:08 yeah... “girls” sure Joel
30:36 Chita Rivera
Steve Kmetko!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You couldn't have edited out what's his face?
I could have, yes, but at least it demonstrates that he liked a musical other than "Evita."
@@auroraspiderwoman5886 Don't forget Phantom! A story of an ugly creepy guy in a suit!
@@auroraspiderwoman5886 And, it shows that his vocabulary hasn't changed much.
Ughh why is Donald trump here
Donald trump he seems like he can be president one day
You think?
Donald trump was so handsome!
Former President Donald Trump
I was enjoying this video so much until I saw Tr*mp. YUCK!!! Ann and Bebe tho
Well, I tried to warn you in the caption :)
Ugh! I liked this video until that crooked president appeared I had to shut it off.
The Trump stuff doesn’t Age well.
Aurora please don't lower your self to tacky political comments. You are above that.
I don't find what Auora said tacky at all. I find it factual.
@@SweatyOracle to each his own.
@@SweatyOracle yeah, of course Trump is going to love a show about getting away with breaking the law.
Yes, the political comments were uncalled for and out of line.
@@WilliamBlakeHall As apposed to all the laws broken by the Clinton's.
Nothing can compare to the original. This "production" is awful. Bob's brilliance is all gone :(
markie polo Yes, that must be why this “production” won 6 Tonys and has been running for 23 years.
@@marcuspd7502 whatever you say dear
markie polo Just relaying the facts.
Awards have never meant anything about quality
Ian Smith And 23 years running means nothing?
