I am shocked to learn that the UK still uses such landfills in 2023. In Germany, all household waste must either be recycled, composted or incinerated at a waste-to-energy plant. Dumping and burying raw household waste on landfills has been illegal for decades.
America still does it. Technically we do it all landfill, recycling, burning, and compost. Each major city, in separated regions, and in every state has their own landfill, etc.
Considering each German produces way above the EU average of waste per year (only behind Denmark, Luxembourg and Malta) then that’s a good thing. Whereas in the UK we produce below the EU average and manage to get it lower year on year. Landfills aren’t good, but it’s all swings and roundabouts.
Problem is the needles are made of the wrong kind of metal, so they're not magnetic, and metal detectors won't show them either. Having said that, using large tweezers to pick up the needles looks much easier already compared to the litter picker used in this episode. I think we could also train dogs to detect used needles, but to do that ethically the floor would still need to be cleared first. Dogs would mainly be useful in finding buried needles, or those hidden between sofa cushions etc. Basically just to check the place after an initial clean to find things human eyes possibly missed. Wouldn't make it quicker, just more thorough.
It's started to make me wonder if the Russians clean the buildings out in Ukraine before they decided to blow them up. I'm guessing deep down somebody is getting money there pockets lined.
Oh my goodness, thankless jobs .. no way in hell I would be hosing down the power plant .. the picking up needles .. noooo way .. well done everyone, thanks for sharing your jobs with us .. Bless
It is mainly because domestic waste and industrial waste dont get mixed so concrete wood etc gets disposed of differently so imagine tearing a building with the domestic waste inside..that will be hell of a job after the fact to then seperate..hence the reason to clear up before hand 😊
I think they meant that they have to wash them in a certain order because they don't want the dirty, sprayed-off water (containing salt from the dirty conductors) splashing onto other conductors stacks. It wasn't quite clear, I had to watch that part a couple times to understand it. The water they spray with is clean fresh water, but if it reaches a certain 'hardness' in minerals from the tap source, the system will shut down as you don't want mineralization build up on the conductors either. Think of a glass of water that's left to dry out and the whitish film that's left behind--those are the minerals in every kind of tap water.
How about councils prevent these buildings going to ruin in the first place !!

Why didn't the guys in Greenock just throw the rubbish out of the windows?
i am screaming
I think we have seen snippets of this episode in short clips previously. Anyway, it is good to see the full one.
I don't think I've watched a clip on UA-cam based in Scotland that doesn't have a bottle of buckfast make an appearance 😂
I loved the elephant part!
I wonder if there was a better way to pick up the needles. Maybe a magnet that has a lever to clean itself off, similar to some can openers.
It seems like there’s got to be a better way to do a lot of this stuff.

Make safe before demolishing?? Have I missed something?

Elephants don't need baths & chains..!
Couldn’t they bring some small plastic or wooden covers to use on those holes in the floor? 🤔
Or throw some stuff through them!
Love filth 🍁🇨🇦
Why do you have to clean out the flats it they are going to tear it down great videos. ❤❤❤❤❤❤

Plus, can you imagine flying used hypodermic needles when it comes down. Not safe for the contractors.
Workplace safety is an absolute joke in this clip with those flats.
Even on the Philippines also existing this landfills 😢
Real shocking is whole building just like horror movies
I put subtitles on because of his accent. Didn't help as the subtitle 'robot' cannae understand him either. Haha😂
so knocking out a window of a building that will be demolished, to toss large items out, is not an option? wtf???
And…… washing salt off with salt water?? This is messing with my head!!

Why do all those apartments have that ugly wallpape. I would get rid of that first.
Those stupid cuts in that particular documentary are the exact reason why I hate classic TV shows... "Coming up" "Stay tuned" ... I hate that shit!
