I remember playing in the early 80s at Horizon Park disc golf in Winston Salem area. Back then if you bought disc you got them out of the trunk of some ones car. I remember having the Dimple as either mine or my brothers. Of course when we started we played with just the big Frisbee. We still play at Horizons now and we are 78 and 72.
I remember buying my first golf disc at Ince's Beach market in Huntington Beach. I waited for months because they had run out of Puppies, and that is what everyone wanted! When they finally came back in stock, it was the Super Puppy. My very first golf disc, no more frisbees! And I remember seeing you at several tournaments, Scott. All over the southland, back when you were a teen. HB, La Mirada, Oak Grove, Sylmar, and maybe Whittier Narrows too! We used to play at every course, even the little 9 holes, South Gate, Tustin, Twyla Reid, etc. and UC Irvine too! So many cool friends. I miss them all. You, Travis Reynolds, and Sammy Ferrans were the best young disc golfers, IMO. Oh, and the Rico brothers too, Stevie and Bamba! CTP at Sylmar for $250 bucks!! Those were the days... It's great to see you playing still!
I have a super puppy with Grateful Dead hot stamp.
I interviewed Jan several years ago and asked him about the Puppy mold. I have some more detail to add that I received first hand from him. Jan didn't mention anything about Ed having a financial interest, but he did say that Ed considered the Puppy design to be a smaller copy of a whamo disc (I think he said 40 mold). Due to concern about a new competitor in the marketplace, Ed went to the injection molder who was making Puppies for Sobel and convinced them that this was a patent violation and if they didn't want to be sued then they needed to hand over the molds to Ed -- which they did. Ed then used the mold to make all the DGA versions of the Puppy (kitty hawk, sure shot, etc). Ed also licensed the mold to AMF and some others? Jan feared a legal battle that he couldn't afford and thus did not pursue any action. Jan definitely had some less than flattering descriptions of Ed and considered the molds to be stolen. Jan swore me to secrecy at the time of the interview as he was still concerned about Ed being litigious. However, since both Jan and Ed have passed now it seems prudent to pass on what I remember about that part of the interview for whatever historical value it has.
Talk about doing it for the LOVE of the game. Great story. BTW I have a black & silver Super Puppy I bought in 1992. I also have a Puppy with the skull and roses stamp I bought in 1992. Thankful for the trailblazers in disc golf. I'm 66 and still love playing the game.
Great discussion, and cool story about how the Puppy was replaced by the Super P.uppy. One correction however the Dimple was not removed from the PDGA approval list due to being too small in diameter, but instead because it was far too stiff to pass the flex test that was instituted at the beginning of 1994. Jan was unwilling to make it in soft enough plastic to pass even though the deadline was extended multiple times to give him a chance to do so.
Love these vids about the history of the sport! It's amazing how far it has come in these 40 years.
Also, kudos to Destiny and Destiny Discs!
Thanks for the story Scott I love the history and grass roots stories and nice touch with Destiny !
I think The Dimple should see a rebirth.
I love the Halloween story!
Thanks for coming to SLC!
Hey all! Best wishes today
Cool to hear that part of the history of the sport!
Excellent reporting / story telling here.
But,
You certainly know that Wham-o commandeered the name Frisbie as in Frisbie Pies. People threw the pie tins before there was plastic, and it was called Frisbie-ing. Wham-o changed the spelling to market their own discs. But your right, Frisbie/Frisbee has always been a public term for a flying disc, which includes golf discs.
Just enough Sap to stick.
As kid in possibly the Original Play It Again Sports in Madison Wisconsin I found a Dimple in 1996--1997 and was a later still in package version where disc initially would pass flex ratings but after a while would become so stiff sometimes the disc shattered apparently from info I could find on internet.
