  • NATO documentary on the strategic importance of the Atlantic and on maritime defence. NATO infrastructure connecting North America and Europe, anti-submarine naval exercises, etc.
The Vital Ocean stresses the activities of allied Navies and the role of Allied Commands in the area, in particular SACLANT and EASTLANT. However it was clearly designed for a general audience and is very different from the more specialised briefing films on SACLANT produced by NATO.
It was available in a variety of language versions and became a classical reference in NATO filmography on Western maritime defense for more than ten years. It was replaced in 1976 by "The Great Highway".
The Italian version of "Vital Ocean" won a prize at the Rassegna Cinematografica "Genti e Paesi" in 1968. The film belongs to the "Atlantic Review series" developed between 1959 and 1968 by the NATO Information Service.
Originally conceived as filmed magazines, the films in this series were composed of short reports on specific topics dealing with NATO members which were developed for troop information. Four to six issues were envisaged every year using as much library footage as possible and, ideally, not more than 30% of original NATO shooting. After the first five issues however, each edition focused on one topic with a more detailed treatment and the documentaries in this series, although still aimed in particular at military audiences, were more largely distributed."

    Music: Jean de Rohozinski
