  • Hailed as the most faithfully filmed adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's legendary characters. This acclaimed series stars Ronald Howard as the world-famous sleuth and H. Marion Crawford in a different portrayal of Dr. Watson than usual.
    THE CASE OF THE SHY BALLERINA: Dr. Watson investigates the murder of Harry Chelton after the two get their hats and coats mixed up at the club. Mrs. Chelton advises Holmes that her husband, a composer, was being blackmailed by a Russian ballerina who's performing in London. Stars Nathalie Schafer (aka Mrs. Lovey Howell from Gilligan's Island)

    I have watched several adaptations of Sherlock Holmes, and I have only really loved Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce. I was not prepared to love Ronald Howard as Holmes, and H. Marion Crawford as Dr. Watson in this adaptation, but I have now watched a dozen of these lovely little tidbits one after the other this evening, and I have to say I love them, too. Thank you so much for finding these.

    Oil lamps, fireplaces, using fire, theses something I love about that, my grandfather in the 1960's used oil lamps and fireplaces for heating, we'd go there often and I'd go to the wood pile and get chopped firewood and sit in front of the fireplace, new logs would snap and pop when the started burning, the sound, the smell, it was cozy.

    The actress who plays the Russian ballerina was the actress who played the showgirl in the case of the Eiffel Tower, she picked up the coin that Sherlock Holmes had thrown from the tower. Perhaps, the female actress pool was limited.

    Certainly not the most faithfully filmed adaptation! Where is Mrs. Hudson, the Hansoms, Broughams and Dog Carts? The lovely English countryside and all those lovely English Roses that walk on two long and slim legs??? No Sir, the most faithful adaptation is easily Granada TV's adaptation, with Jeremy Brett as Holmes and David Burke/ Edward Hardwicke as Dr. Watson! Why, even the dialogues of the Granada TV Series are very, very close!!
    Adapting the short stories into the under-30 Minutes format means no frills - the 1 Hour format of Granada TV was just about right for each of the Short Stories!
    The plots in this series are weak too, with only The Engineer's Shoes being very close to the original, The Engineer's Thumb! Overall though, they are quite enjoyable to watch, but faithful reproduction they are certainly not!!

      agreed that in the short time frame, they can't develop the mystery of the cases in much depth. BUT I think this version is more about the little comedic quips and jolly dynamics between Holmes, Watson, Lestrade etc... it's just "cute and fun" :)

    Those two characters here, I mean Watson and Holmes, area looking alike two circus clowns against my understanding about the couple that I draw out from Doyle writings. It’s simple parody on that in fact.
    Sorry

    • @oldnukexxx
      @oldnukexxx 4 роки тому +2

      Doyle's writings were, I think, meant to be taken "studiously," with Watson's character's providing a 'Greek Chorus" to direct the reader's appreciation to Doyle's intended topics: the powers of observation and deduction (with a foundation of applicable sciences). These may be seen as "dry" subjects, more readily digested in written form (and at the reader's leisure), whereas early television needed to insert itself into peoples' daily schedules in real-time. half-hour doses. Thus. the adding of entertainment value to "sweeten" the educational value and ensure an audience. What better way than to use Watson (and LeStrade) as comic foils to provide this entertainment value and, in so doing, keep the general public tuning in for more.
      If you prefer the lessons without the "parody," I recommend reading the books and stories (with plenty of time for reflection and a snifter of brandy.)
